Eventers Help Libbys Develop New Training Aid
An
innovative training aid devised by two leading event riders
has been in a range of webbing tack by leading manufacturers
Libbys.
The
Lungie Bungie has a strong cord of elastic fitted to the bit
with a triggered connector which has a large ring in the centre
The aid is then fitted to a lunging roller and there are D-rings
on each side which allow for three different tensions.

encourages equal pressure on both sides of the bit and encourages
softness and submission in the horse without using any force. It is
supplied with separate trigger hooks so that the device can also be
used on a saddle while the horse is being ridden.

The
Girls Beat The Boys In The $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix
Week 6 of Indio Desert Circuit |
The boys went first
in today's $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix during Week 6 of the HITS Indio
Desert Circuit. Between the three of them, Will Simpson, Richard Spooner
and Ray Texel, they could not post a clear jump off round over Dave
Ballard's course. Misti Cassar was the first of the two girls to jump
off, and with a shout of triumph as Pasadena flew over the final oxer
she posted a clean round in a time of 47.443.
Cassar definitely
learned from the boys as she rode a more conservative track, and was
more than 10 seconds slower than Will Simpson, who posted a blazing
time of 36.174 aboard El Campeon's Ado Annie. However, time is not
the only factor in the jump off!

Prison
Sentence for Horse Abuser
On
Monday 4th March at Basildon Magistrates Court Sandra Carpenter,
49, of St. Margaret's Farm, Little Burstead, Essex was sentenced
to a two month prison sentence for causing unnecessary suffering
to a grey broodmare; 2 weeks in prison (to run concurrently)
for breach of a Court Order banning her from keeping horses
- and given a further 10 year ban on keeping horses.

SkillHORSE - Ian Stark
OBE, Patron of Exciting New Initiative
Ian
Stark OBE is supporting a new national skills competition, to be
announced at Equus - The Horse Event on 4th April 2002. SkillHORSE
is the latest addition to over 70 national competitions covering
a wide range of the country's vocational skills for young people.
SkillHORSE
has been brought together by leading riders and key professionals
with an interest in promoting the horse industry. (See below for
committee). The competition was initiated by Stubbing Court Training
Group, a leading provider of Work Based Learning for young people
working with horses, based in the Midlands. SkillHORSE is supported
by Derbyshire Learning and Skills Council. Ian Stark OBE outlines
the aims of SkillHORSE:

Days for All The Queen’s Horses
The first
major tribute to The Queen in her Golden Jubilee year is the
spectacular equestrian event All The Queen’s Horses,
to be hosted at Royal Windsor Horse Show during the evenings
of 16th, 17th and 18th May 2002. To commemorate this splendid

enamel boxes.

So Perfect Partners
Despite having
rehomed nearly two hundred and fifty companions in the last
18 months a leading equine welfare charity is still desperately
seeking loving homes for a further 23.
"All our 5 Centres", comments Nadine Hawkes, Operations
Support Manager at the ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses), "are full, and we urgently need to find loving
homes for these companions if we are to have the space to acceptnew
welfare cases." |
Lots of horses
and ponies every year are loaned out by the ILPH to suitable homes
as riding animals, but others, due to old injuries, bad conformation
or health problems, cannot be ridden so they lead happy useful lives
as companions to other horses. When people are looking for riding
or competition animals they are willing to accept stable vices or
small problems especially if the animal is a good performer or is
perfect in every other way. However, when it comes to equine companions,
the largerhorses, those with behavioural or minor health problems,
are the ones that get left behind.

of Wilmington, OH, won the Intervet/USET Reining Championship Qualifier
aboard San Jo Freckles, owned by Michael Harper, with a score of 220.5,
winning $2,718.95. Flarida edged out Bryant Pace, on Debra Sloan’s
Gunner, and Tom McCutcheon riding Smartest Chic Olena, owned by Terry
Owens. Pace and McCutcheon tied for second place with a score of 218,
each winning a check for $1,882.35.

Foxhall
Events, LLC To Host Grand Prix Dressage Competition
|
ATLANTA, GA—(March
6, 2002)—The MBNA Foxhall Cup, the National Championship of Eventing,
will host the Foxhall Grand Prix Invitational on April 19 and 21,
2002. The dressage competition, featuring Olympic-level athletes,
will take place in conjunction with the Foxhall Cup at Foxhall Farms,
a 1,200-acre facility outside of Atlanta.
Athletes
will compete amidst the beauty of the inaugural Foxhall Flower Show,
held on the polo field at Foxhall Farms. The Grand Prix test will
be on Saturday, April 20, the day of the eventing cross country competition.
The musical freestyle will be on Sunday, April 21, prior to the conclusion
of the stadium jumping phase of the eventing championship. A purse
of $20,000 will be awarded to the winners of these events.

Officials Announced
For The 2002 Ox Ridge Charity Horse Show
DARIEN, CT –
March 6, 2002 – The 73rd annual Ox Ridge Charity Horse Show,
June 12-16 at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, CT, returns with
an impressive line-up of officials. Returning as Show Manager is
John D. Ammerman of Dickerson, MD. The Operations Manager is William
Glass of Bokellia, FL.
The 2002
Ox Ridge Charity Horse Show will open on Wednesday, June 12 at 8:00
AM and run through Sunday, June 16. Each show day will present four
rings of competition including pony hunters, juniors, amateurs,
equitation classes and jumpers. A portion of the proceeds from the
show will benefit The Center For Hope, a counseling and support
center for children and adults located in Darien.

For many years,
equestrian equipment manufacturers have concentrated on improving

of Francis, which she will judge and then follow with practical advice
and tips.
Francis
is a top international dressage judge who has judged pure dressage
at the World Cup Finals, the World Championships and the Olympics.
She used to compete at top level and is a top class trainer who is
also able to wear an 'eventers hat'!

Canadian
Ian Millar Wins $50,000 HITS Ocala Grand Prix |
Ian Millar of Perth,
Ontario, a perennial favorite of show jumping fans world wide, led
the victory gallop of the $50,000 HITS Ocala Grand Prix at the new
HITS Post Time show facility on State Highway 27. A total of 26 horses
competed under gloomy skies and persistent rain around a course designed
by Danny Foster of Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. Foster's Round-one
course included a total of 13 efforts, including a triple at fence
5a, b, and c. At the end of round one, only four horse-and-rider pairs
had managed to turn in a clean effort in today's King Shavings U.S.
Grand Prix League event. Of these, with McGee and Abby Converse just
exceeded the 88 -second time-allowed, resulting in 1/2 -fault time
penalty and fourth place finish.

North American Young Riders' Championships, presented by State

March 5, 2002—The North American Young Riders' Championships
(NAYRC) presented by State Line Tack will return to Tempel Farms,
in Wadsworth, IL on August 6 – 11, 2002. This marks the 13th
time that Linda Smith Buonanno and Martha Smith Simpson, the event’s
honorary co-chairmen, have hosted the championship on their magnificent
property! The
North American Young Riders' Championships, presented by State Line
Tack, is the premier equestrian competition in North America for young
riders, age 16-21. Young equestrians come from the United States,
Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands to vie for
team and individual Championships in the three Olympic equestrian
disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing.
The competition
is run under rules of the Fédération Equestre Internationale,
the international governing body for equestrian sport and is also
designated as an official USA Junior Olympic-Equestrian event.

Wellington,
Florida—March 5, 2002—1984 Olympic double gold medalist
Joe Fargis of Southampton, NY won the $75,000 Tommy Bahama
Florida Open presented by RV Sales of Broward during week
seven of the Cosequin Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm
Beach Polo Equestrian Club.
“The
(first round) course was long and the time allowed was tight,”
said Fargis. “There was no rest on the course. It was
one of the bigger courses here in several years.”

as it was 21 years ago, when it was first introduced into
the market, according to the latest research work, which was
reported in the prestigious journal, Veterinary Parasitology.

Eqvalan against naturally acquired gastrointestinal worms was determined
in ponies at two widely separated locations. Following treatment with

Foxhall Cup to Start Final Round of World Equestrian Games

4, 2002—The MBNA Foxhall Cup CCI***, April 18-21 in Atlanta,
GA, will be the first of the final five United States Equestrian Team
selection trials for the U.S. eventing team for the 2002 World Equestrian
Games (WEG). The eventing World Championships will take place as part
of the World Equestrian Games that are scheduled to take place September
11-22 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.
The World
Equestrian Games are held every four years and are, other than the
Olympics, the world’s most important equestrian event. This year,
for the first time, seven world championships will be decided at the
World Equestrian Games: eventing, dressage, show-jumping, endurance,
driving, vaulting and for the first time ever, reining.

last month, at www.nzhanoverian.com.
As well
as promoting the New Zealand Hanoverian locally and overseas,
the new site will give members and breeders a central portal

administration documentation, such as membership and registration
forms.

William "Buddy" Brown started to get nervous mid-way through
the $50,000 King Shavings Grand Prix held during Week 5 of the HITS
Indio Desert Circuit. "I built what I needed to build, and Richard
Spooner and Robinson proved it was a jumpable course when they went
first. Richard just left a stride out at the last jump and had the
rail, but no one else did that the rest of the class."

Indio
Desert Circuit Week 5 Wraps Up With Many Winners |
Week 5 is usually
the most popular week of the six week HITS Indio Desert Circuit, and
this year was no exception. Competition was keen, and many riders
are vying for prestigious circuit championships. At the start of Week
5, Nicole Shahinian-Simpson had the lead for the Golden Horse sponsored
Circuit Grand Prix Rider title. Her win on Friday increased her lead.
John Pearce is in second, followed by Duncan McFarlane and Ray Texel.

Mythunderstandings - Managing Activity Levels.
WAVERLY, WV When a horse is just being
kept as a pasture ornament, nobody pays much attention to
his activity level. He pretty much does what he wants and
being a horse that is mostly going to be ambling along grazing.
As soon as we start training a horse or wanting to use him
for some purpose other than admiring glances, however, we
have to start managing both his mental and physical activity
levels.

In his mental
development, the horse learns that if he responds correctly to a pressure
we put on him, the pressure goes away. He gradually builds a vocabulary
of the pressures we use to suggest the shape of his body, the direction
of the next stride, the tempo of that stride, etc.
In the beginning, the trainer's mental activity challenge is to help
the horse build that vocabulary in a horse logical way that never
raises the horse's excitement level. As the horse's vocabulary gets
bigger, the trainer's challenge is to vary the mental activity enough
to keep the horse from being bored.
In his physical development, the horse needs to build the muscles
that can carry him as his training progresses into the higher levels
of whatever sport he's being trained for. In the beginning, his physical
conditioning needs to be made in small increments. The trainer builds
bone and muscle by alternating periods of stress with periods of rest.
The stress part pushes the muscle just a little bit past where it's
been before and the rest part allows the stressed muscle to heal and,
in the process, become stronger.

Nicole
Shaninian-Simpson Captures Second Grand Prix Win At Indio Circuit |
Nicole Shahinian-Simpson
became the first grand prix rider of the HITS Indio Desert Circuit
to log multiple grand prix victories with her win in today's $25,000
Ariat Grand Prix. After 51 rounds, nine horses moved on to the jump-off
over Buddy Brown's testing course. Richard Spooner, riding with a
broken bone in his leg, qualified four of his five horses for the
jump-off, but he had to settle for second as it was Simpson's day
aboard El Campeon's Petri.

Marlborough
Cup will not go ahead but spirit set to live on
|
The Marlborough
Cup, the UK's only timber race, is to be discontinued in its current
format and to be replaced by other exciting developments planned for
the future. The seventh running of the race, along with its support
events - The Silver Fox and Countryside Fair - had been set to take
place on Sunday 26 May 2002. The organisers' decision has been made
following an acknowledgement, after much thought and analysis that
timber racing in the UK has only developed a 'niche' appeal.

Buff” during April’s Equine Affaire
World
champion equestrienne and fitness trainer Emily Harrington headlines
clinic on fitness for the equestrian athlete
(Fort
Worth, TX) – Two-time American Quarter Horse Association Amateur
World Champion and Congress Champion Emily Harrington is bringing
a different message to the horse-owning public – a message
that emphasizes the physical condition of the rider, not just the
horse. She’ll be sharing that message during the Columbus,
Ohio, Equine Affaire, April 11-14.
“It’s
become more and more apparent to me that most riders do not have
the physical stamina they need to enjoy riding their horses,”
says Emily. “Many see the act of riding the horse as exercise,
but in fact, many muscle groups get ignored or abused, such as the
lower back, inner thigh regions and neck and shoulder area. With
this simple system, riders will be able to condition their bodies
so that soreness and pain will become less of an issue.”
