Professional Farrier Organization Issues Warning To Horse Owners
Strasser Hoof Trim Method Far Too Risky To Recommend, Says Guild President Henry Heymering
WASHINGTON DC-In response to an anti-traditional hoofcare program advocated by German veterinarian Hiltrud Strasser, the Guild of Professional Farriers, an organization of advanced-level professional full-time farriers, is the first US horse health organization to caution horseowners about this program for the well-being of their horses.
"Strasser hoofcare" is currently being promoted in the United States and Canada through a network of seminars and via Internet discussion groups.
Guild president Henry Heymering issued a multiple-point statement in June outlining the potential dangers of the Strasser program, which is built on a naturalistic approach to horse management, but with unorthodox trimming of the feet.
The Strasser hoof trimming method has been the subject of equine welfare warnings in Great Britain from organizations such as the International League for the Protection of Horses, the Worshipful Company of Farriers, the Farriers Registration Council, and the Laminitis Clinic. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals became involved in one case where a horse was euthanized following unsuccessful trimming by a Strasser follower.
Heymering agrees with several points of the Strasser program, stating, "Barefoot is an ideal state for horses who can perform safely and soundly without shoes. I also agree that maximum turnout time is desirable for all horses. My disagreement with her method comes in the severity of the trim and the radical intentional misaligning of the hoof capsule compared to current professional farriery standards."
Heymering is most concerned that not only may the extreme trimming technique be dangerous, but that it is made considerably more dangerous when done by untrained owners or even Strasser-certified trimmers, if they have less that three or four years of experience applying the method.

Ireland Fourth In Linz Nations Cup
The water jump caused many riders a problem in today's Nations Cup competition at Linz, Austria, but none more so than Ireland's Lt. David O'Brien, whose Boherdeal Clover had two refusals at the jump, and was eliminated.
In the first round, 24 out of 50 horses had a foot in the water jump, and in the second round it also caught Cian O'Connor's Waterford Crystal, whose heel touched the tape, spoiling what was otherwise a perfect round.
Chef d'Equipe Lt. Gerry Mullins saud : << I have never seen Waterford Crystal jump better in his career, and it was a shame that the water spoiled what would have been a classic double clear for Cian. Lt. David O'Brien was most unfortunate, having won the speed class this morning, and then picking up two refusals in the Nations Cup. I also think that Denis Coakley and Obos Quality deserve praise for their performance. As relative newcomers to the pressure of Nations Cups, they did very well indeed.>>

Two for Three: Competing in Dressage Championships Brings Added Bonus
HUNTINGTON, NY—June 13, 2002—It’s an offer that’s hard to refuse: compete in two classes in the upcoming schooling show and the third class is free! Then you read the fine print. The third class—for free—is a challenge for sighted riders to perform the same dressage test as blind visually impaired and physically disabled riders who are participating in the first-of-its kind competition.
The competition will be held July 9-13 at Willow Tree Farm at Caumsett State Historic Park in Huntington, NY.
"Few have accepted ‘The Able Challenge,’ that we are offering" says Denise Avolio, chairman of the organizing committee for the Inner Vision Championships for Riders with a Disability. "Riders don’t have to be blindfolded or impaired in any way. They just have to ride the test, but few accept the challenge."
Avolio is determined to change misconceptions: physically challenged people are able and capable. "There is a misconception that people with disabilities aren't as capable. ‘The Able Challenge’ is a fun attempt to bring awareness to the challenges and determination of people with physical disabilities."

BHS Alerts Horsebox Owners
The British Horse Society is alerting horsebox owners that tachographs, where fitted, will now be checked at the annual MOT in line with new regulations which came into force on 1 April. This will happen even where the horsebox is privately owned. It will not apply to older vehicles where there is a separate speedometer.
Prior to the test, horsebox owners will need to have the tachograph checked to ensure that it was initially calibrated and tested when the horsebox was new. If it has been disconnected for some reason (for the fitting of a new clutch for instance), then in order for the lorry to pass its MOT it will have to be recalibrated and sealed. If the vehicle is used for hire and reward, the tachograph check at the annual test will ensure that the vehicle complies with the current regulations.

BHS Membership Keeps On Growing
Membership of the British Horse Society continues to grow, and at 57,434, is higher now than at any time since the competitive disciplines of eventing, dressage and endurance left the BHS to go it alone in 1997.
Kay Driver BHS chief executive said: "The increase in membership is evidence that people recognise the BHS as the one body working for ordinary riders and horse owners, and campaigning for all their needs. It is really encouraging that more and more people are joining. If you are a rider we need your support."
Riders are becoming increasingly concerned about the problems of riding on the roads and the BHS is the only organisation actively working to get the message over to motorists to pass horses wide and slow and to treat riders with consideration. It is thanks to the BHS that there are now ads on TV which illustrate the problem graphically. Riders and carriage drivers need more off road routes and in the past 10 years the BHS has opened up hundreds of miles of new bridleways and byways.

The Story of War Admiral: Triple Crown Winner, Champion Sire, and Man o’ War’s Most Distinguished Son
Lexington, KYJune 17, 2002 Eclipse Press announces the publication of War Admiral, the seventeenth title in the Thoroughbred Legends series.
Only one son of the immortal Man o’ War approached his sire in greatness: War Admiral. In 1937, War Admiral swept the Triple Crown races, showing his courage in the Belmont Stakes in which he ran with a badly cut foot. Although the smallish brown colt did not resemble his imposing chestnut sire, War Admiral matched Man o’ War in racing mettle. He was a champion and a Horse of the Year.
Author Edward L. Bowen, biographer of Man o’ War, chronicles the exploits of War Admiral, including his historic battle with the great Seabiscuit. War Admiral raced until the age of five, then was retired to owner Samuel D. Riddle’s farm in Kentucky. There, he distinguished himself as a stallion, siring Horse of the Year Busher and other champions.

South Essex Trailblazers Entries Up By 20 per cent
More PSOA centres opt for championship list
At least 24,000 riders will have competed in qualifying classes by the time the national South Essex Insurance Brokers Trailblazers showjumping and dressage championships are held in September.
Norman Bargh, spokesman for the organisers, the Permanent Show Organisers Association (PSOA), said: "We estimated that there were about 20,000 entries in qualifying rounds last year, which is only 10 per cent of the estimated 200,000 unaffiliated riders in the country. This year, our members - who run permanent show centres - are reporting that entries this season show a 20 per cent increase."
The competition, part of the extensive sponsorship programme financed by South Essex Insurance Brokers, is designed to provide both an introduction to showjumping and dressage competition and to give unaffiliated riders a well run, national championship to aim for. In qualifying rounds, dressage classes are at Preliminary, Novice and Elementary levels and showjumping over 75cms, 85cms, 95cms and 1.05m obstacles for both seniors and juniors, with seniors strictly limited to rides at a minimum 14.2hh.

Walter at model show
Not once, but twice!
Walter, a real live horse, has been invited to attend the West Coast Model Horse Collector's Jamboree and introduce his own model likeness.
Humbly, he has accepted.
The Jamboree, in it's 11th year, will be held from August 16 to 18 at Fairplex Building Five in Pomona, California, and will attract model horse collectors from all over the country as well as Europe and Asia. Last year Walter was selected by Jamboree officials as a new model horse because he had just "written" a book, Walter Spills The Oats." Since the book is still selling very well, Sheryl Leisure, show producer and sculptress of Walter's model, thought he should have a second appearance so show goers could see first hand how much the model resembles the live horse.

Brentina Wins Grand Prix, Takes Lead in WEG Trials
By Stacey Nedrow-Wigmore
June 8, 2002, Gladstone, NJ--Despite Brentina's breaking out into hives just two hours before her ride time, Debbie McDonald and the Hanoverian mare took the gold medal in the second Grand Prix of the selection trials for the World Equestrian Games (WEG) dressage team. "I was very emotional at the end of the test," said McDonald after her second win during the trials with a 71.28 percent. She went into the test riding a little conservatively, looking for a strong, clean performance. McDonald said that even though the mare wasn't feeling 100 percent, "she really came through for me." Her scores moved her into first place over Sue Blinks and Flim Flam in the overall standings, with Sunday's freestyle score to count for the final 15 percent.
Christine Traurig and Etienne took second with 69.96 percent. "I was really happy with him," she said. "I couldn't have asked for more." Traurig didn't expect to be in contention for a team spot since they came into the trials toward the bottom of the qualifying list. "I just wanted to ride a consistent test and do a good job," she said. The pair kept their fourth place standings overall.

Horse Racing Personalities Join Support for Charity Ride
Jockeys, trainers and media personalities alike have come out in support of a long distance charity ride this summer to raise awareness of the slaughter horse transportation traffic across Europe.

Richard Pitman, Carl Llewellyn, Clare Balding, Jonjo O'Neil, Terry Biddlecombe, Henrietta Knight, John Francome, Richard Dunwoody, and Graham Thorner have all added their names to a growing list of personalities from the field of entertainment and the horse world supporting the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Transportation Awareness Ride from Scotland to Westminster this summer.
"We are fortunate in the UK that regulations governing the transportation of horses, and indeed all animals, for slaughter are enforced. This sadly is not the case on the continent and many equines suffer unnecessarily, travelling for days without stopping for rest, food or water.
"We fully support the work of the ILPH in trying to see the same standards on slaughter horse transportation that are in operation in this country, applied in mainland Europe, with the eventual aim of stopping the live traffic altogether," they commented.
In addition Richard Dunwoody, Clare Balding and Graham Thorner are all hoping to join the ride on horseback at some point over its 6 week duration.
Adds John McCririck, of Channel 4 Racing, "We should all back the ILPH's initiative to stop the live traffic of horses for slaughter in Europe - no horse ought to suffer appalling transportation conditions particularly on its final journey."
Full details on the Ride can be obtained by calling 0870 366 6910. Those wishing to offer their support in any way can call 0870 908 1927 where they will be able to leave a message.

The Know and Go Series
Good conformation-as defined by almost everyone-is often times not exactly what you want in your performance horse.
"The best conformation," says Don Blazer in his newest Know and Go Series e-booklet "is the conformation which gets you the performance you want. And good conformation by the usual standards may not get the job done."
Blazer explains the standards of conformation established by most breed associations are related to the horse's efficiency of movement and not to specific performances.
"Yes," Blazer agrees, "what is called good conformation also has a direct bearing on soundness in most cases. But soundness and efficiency of movement may not be the most desirable traits for specific performances," Blazer points out. "Today's winning western pleasure horse is not the epitome of soundness and efficient movement. And the best conformation for a gaited horse is not the best conformation for a jumper."
