Bill To Amend The
Animal Health Act 1981
Joint statement
from the British Horse Society and British Equine Veterinary
Association |
After consultations
with DEFRA, the BHS and BEVA are agreed that the provisions of this
Bill should not alarm horse (pony, donkey, ass and mule) owners.
Taken out of context
and read in isolation, the Bill to amend the Animal Act 1981, may
well give rise to misunderstandings and interpretations. However,
it should be read together with not only the guidance notes but also
the original Animal Health Act 1981.
The main purpose
of this Bill is to provide additional powers to deal with Foot and
Mouth Disease (FMD) and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies
(TSE) in sheep. The Bill also makes a number of amendments to the
enforcement provisions of the Animal Health Act 1981.

Paramount
Learns To Give It Up . . . Again
My
neighbor Paula Kane called last May with a definite strain
in her voice. "You know my big grey thoroughbred Paramount,"
she asked me? "Couldnt miss him Paula. Big as a
house. Sure I know the horse," I replied. "Well
the last three or four shoeings have been a nightmare. And
its getting worse even with tranquilizers. Its
to the point of sweating and swearing. Im afraid Ill
lose my farrier or hell hurt the horse. Do you think
you can help me Frank," she pleaded? "
|
Paramount was a
massive twenty year old light grey, almost white, raw-boned thoroughbred.
Id met him a couple of years earlier when Id first met
my neighbors Jeff and Paula Kane. Hed raced as a youngster,
then jumped big jumps for some years and was now relaxing in the twilight
of his life. Hed seemed pretty checked out to me, not a real
people horse. I was a little concerned about this foothandling issue,
as I wasnt confident I could get through to him on my level,
which places great importance in bonding first, then working on his
issues.

Farriers
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
One of
the most common complaints among horse owners is their inability
to find a "good" farrier. They charge too much,
are always late or breaking appointments, and don't listen
to you when you tell them what you want are many of the objections
to their talent or behavior. Those of us happy with our farriers
keep quiet for fear that if he gets too many new clients we
will lose him.
|
Unfortunately
not enough horse owners really understand what constitutes a good
farrier, how to find him or how to keep him. And believe me, if you
find a truly good farrier you will want to keep him. With some careful
thought and consideration every one of us can find a farrier we can
work with and will contribute to the well-being or our horses.
Most of us have
heard the old axiom, "No foot, no horse." But despite how
much biotin we supplement into the animal's feed or how religious
we are about applying the hoof dressings, if the foot is not balanced
and trimmed properly for the horse's conformation, the rest is inadequate.
This is why a knowledgeable farrier is so essential to your horse's
performance and comfort. Not enough of us, though, give this professional
his due.

Rein-Aid
Productions
The Rein-Aid®
is a clear winner when it comes to improving the horses acceptance
to the bit. Used for riding, longlining and lunging, Rein-Aid®
focuses on an elastic contact with the horses mouth, similar
to that achieved through education by World Class riders.
|
|
Not to be confused
with imitations which lack the 'loop' that limits the stretch, the
elastic 'warns' the horse that more pressure will follow immediately
if they do not respond correctly to the bit. Horses quickly learn
that it is more comfortable to yield to a soft elastic aid than the
fixed, solid rein which follows. This interaction between the elastic
and loop keeps the connection to the bit kind yet effective, allowing
the rider to enhance their communication without resistance from the
horse.

Irish
Draught Does First Hunter Class
11/3/01
Albuquerque New Mexico, America's most popular Irish Draught
Stallion took another step in proving why he is being considered
the most versatile Irish Draught Stallion in the world. At
the encouragement of one of America's most successful show
jumping riders, Rob Gage, O'Leary's Irish Diamond was entered
in the year end hunter jumper show in Albuquerque NM. Though,
he has great dressage gaits, not preferred for hunter competition,
the Irish stallion impressed the hunter judges with his jumping
technique and his famous disposition. Irish was a late entry
after Gage talked the owner of the stallion to take him to
the show for some training over the jump courses.
|
Gage said the exposure
to the flowers and other colorful obstacles would be good for the
stallion, strictly a dressage competitor for the last three years.
Gage was so impressed during a training session that he lobbied to
have Irish entered in a pre green class. The stallion got a third
place ribbon, but more importantly his jumping style and ease with
lead changes impressed judges and unlookers. Once again the most heard
question was "what breed is he?"

At
Ground Level
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
A common
complaint among horse owners and their professional caregivers
is a lack of ground manners. The animal may refuse to stand
still, resist having his feet handled, pull away from or crowd
his handler when led, or any number of other misbehaviors.
His lack of ground manners may be a mild nuisance or verging
on the dangerous; regardless, it detracts from the pleasure
of working with him, perhaps even his companionship. However,
by establishing limits that the horse knows and follows, he
can once again or finally become a well-mannered horse that
everyone enjoys.
|
Most problems that
arise on the ground are usually based on a lack of training; the handler
failed to teach acceptable behavior. It is easier, though, to get
angry and believe the horse is being deliberately disobedient instead
of taking responsibility for the holes left in the animal's training.
To correct this trend, step out of the saddle and spend some time
working on the lessons of the ground.

Running Effective Meetings
What? Another meeting?
Let's face it. Meetings are not always fun, effective or productive.
Yet some meetings leave you abuzz when they close. You're informed,
energized, motivated, spurred into action. If only all meetings could
go this way. It requires thought and skill to run a good meeting.
Whether you coach students, have horse business employees, participate
as part of a volunteer activity, or meet with your professional horse
association, you can develop and add to your meeting facilitation
skills. Let's take a look at the basics of running meetings that sizzle
rather than sag.
First, determine
what you are looking for as your meeting outcomes. Do you want decisions
made? Are you looking for shared information? Or will you be looking
for both?

Feeding
Right
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
With the
advent of commercial feeds and complete rations available
through most tack stores and feed mills, designing a balanced
ration for your horse need not be a time-consuming or difficult
chore. With a basic understanding of the nutrients required
by every horse, the different sources for nutrition and what
your horse's stage of life is and his amount of work, each
owner can confidently maintain good health.
|
All horses require
the six basic nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals
and water. Carbohydrates and fat provide the majority of energy to
the horse; they are supplied mostly through concentrates. Protein
is the building block for the horse, used to form muscle, hormones,
hoof and hair, among other tissues. The horse requires vitamins in
very small amounts to help as catalysts that prompt reactions in the
body tissues. The fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are synthesized
by the horse, while the water-soluble ones (B-complex and C) must
be found in the diet. Minerals are required in varying amounts and
are in three categories: major, macro and trace. Since they are found
in the soil, different regions of the country have different dietary
mineral requirements. Water is a crucial nutrient that must always
be provided by a fresh and clean source. Requirements vary by environment,
feed and work.
