Horse
Passport Agency Launched To Meet Huge Demand
The
Horse Passport Agency has been launched to cope with the
huge demand from owners who still need the compulsory equine
passport.
The
government announced on 14 February 2002 that all equines
would need a passport from the 1 January 2004. Penalties
for failing to obtain a passport can be up to £5000
or one month's imprisonment. Demand is still very high from
owners and so The Horse Passport Agency launched its self
last month to help owners obtain this necessary document.
The
agency, recognised by DEFRA, issues identity passports for
horses with no known breeding for just £14 each. There
are no hidden costs as the form is completed by the owner
without the need for a veterinary surgeon, and so is one
of the most reasonably priced available.

First
Belfast Show Will "Awe And Excite" Audiences
Belfasts
own horse show, the Belfast Indoor International Horse
Show, which opens a four-day run at the Odyssey Arena
on November 27, will be a feast of equestrian competition
and entertainment - and some performances are already
nearing sell out!
The
four-day show, brainchild of Equestrian Sports Promotions,
has already attracted some of the top names in Irish,
European and British showjumping with a prize fund of
£210,000. Add to that the lure of the Irish Shetland
Grand National and the magical displays by Jean Francois
Pignon with his amazing horses and the result is a show
not to be missed. |
Irish
people love horses, and we are giving them a horse show
they can be proud of, says Mrs McKenna. Over
the four days, we intend to awe them with the horse as a
competitor, excite them with horse entertainment and then
top it all off with Belfasts widest choice of exclusive
shopping under one roof. The idea seems to have been well
received because only a few tickets remain for some performances.

Conditioning
Advice For The Winter From TopSpec
YOU
want to do the best for your horse but there are so many
choices! Deciding what to feed your horse in the winter
can be very confusing. There are an enormous number of feeds
to choose from and everyone gives you different advice,
so how do you choose?
A
good start is to talk to an experienced equine nutritionist.
Many feed companies offer a free telephone advisory service,
to help you make the right choice for your horse.
The
onset of autumn means horse owners can no longer rely on
grass to provide most, or all, of our horses nutritional
needs. As the night draw in the feeding value of grass falls
away sharply and cold weather means that horses need more
calories in their food than in summer just to keep warm.
A
sensible winter feeding program starts with minimizing heat
loss.
Keeping
your horse warm and dry in a stable will not only make his
life more pleasant but will also reduce his requirements
for calories. This is essential for fully clipped horses
and ponies.

New
Look Rambo® Turnouts For Your Horse!
Rambo,
absolutely the best your horse can get!
With a new range in turnout rugs launched in 2003, together
with some exciting changes to our existing range, we
are sure you will love the new designs and materials
available. Continual improvement and innovation forms
the basis of Horseware's approach to product development.
This year we have improved the cut of the Rambo Wug
Plus and Rhino Wug Plus Turnouts, to include the SUREFIT
neck design of the Rambo Supreme and new strong Velcro
neck fastenings. As these rugs have a brand new neck
design, we have made their names simpler too - they
are now simply the Rambo Plus and Rhino Plus Turnouts!
Due to the resounding success of the Rambo® Supreme
Turnout Rug, with its innovative leg arches, third surcingle
and reflective strips, we will now be adding these features
to the Rambo® Plus, Rambo® Wug and the new Rambo®
Original with leg arches. The Rambo Original classic
will remain as it always has - with its simple, classical
design.
The
Rhino Rugs now have a new look for 2003, smart eyecatching
check in practical rich colours, and a new 1100 denier
ripstop material, the tough just got tougher!. Please

New
Belfast Show Attracts A Star Turnout
A
prize fund of £210,000 for the first Belfast
Indoor International Horse Show is attracting leading
Irish, British and European showjumping riders.
World Champion Dermott Lennon heads the Irish contingent,
a strong favourite for the closing class of the four
day show, the Envirocare Grand Prix, which has prize
money totalling £81,000 with £27,000 to
the winner.
|
But
he will face strong international opposition. Countrymen
Peter Charles, Jessica Kurten and Billy Twomey are on a
strong entry list, which includes also Germanys Franke
Sloothak, Belgiums Jos Lansink and Ludo Philipaerts,
while Switzerland will field world ranked number one Markus
Fuchs and Beat Mandli.
Three Whitakers - John, Michael and Robert - head up a British
squad, which also boasts on-form Nick Skelton and Robert
Smith as well as Di Lampard.
The interest among international riders has been amazing,
said Theresa McKenna, Event and Operations Director of the
show. In the next weeks I am sure we are going to
add even more star names top the entry we already have.
McKenna has already booked dates at the Odyssey for 2004
and 2005 and put in a bid for a World Cup round in Belfast
for next year.

Hydrotherapy
Unit Offers Special Care For Horses
Panama
Sport Horses, based in East Lancashire, with over 30
years of experience training and producing competition
horses has unveiled a brand new product proven to be
beneficial in the treatment and prevention of a variety
of equine leg conditions.
The
Panama Equine Hydrotherapy Unit uses chilled saline
water to drastically reduce a horse's recovery time
following an injury, operation or ailment. The veterinary
profession highly recommends the use of such treatment
for tendon injuries, laminitis, strains, flesh wounds,
hoof growth and many more conditions.
"The
benefits of equine hydrotherapy have been conclusively
revealed in recent years," says Carol Richardson,
professional show jumper and partner in Panama Sport
Horses. "We decided to develop our own unique unit
offering the treatment at the most cost effective price
on the market". Please

High
standards provide a close finish at British Riding
Clubs' Dressage to Music Championships & Quadrille
Selection Trial
Sponsored
by South Essex Insurance Brokers
Last weekend (11 - 12 October) saw the British Riding
Clubs' (BRC) National Dressage to Music finals at
Addington Manor Equestrian Centre in Buckinghamshire,
along with the annual Quadrille selection trial. The
high standard of riding produced close results in
each competition.
|
In
the Quadrille Trial, sixteen teams battled it out for a
place at the Final, to be held in Olympia's Grand Hall during
the pre-Christmas International Show Jumping Show. New for
this year in the dressage finals was the Pairs Dressage
to Music, for seniors only, which ran alongside the Junior
Championship and the Quadrille Selection Trial on day one
of the competition.
The
build up to the Senior Dressage to Music final saw over
60 individuals qualify for the chance to win the South Essex
Insurance Brokers' sponsored competition. The horses entered
varied greatly in type and breed, from cobs to warmbloods,
with a few native breeds including a purebred Highland mare
that had lived wild on the hills of Scotland until she was
four. This versatile horse, Burnside Holly, owned by Deirdre
Robinson from West Sussex, was placed seventh in the individual
competition, and was also part of the Ardingly Riding Club
Quadrille team.

Inaugural
Leinster Show Jumping Championship Series |
Following
the most successful ever summer league in fourteen years,
the show-jumping calendar for the remainder of the season
has moved indoors to the 'Kathleen Flannelly Memorial Arena
at Kill International Equestrian Centre. Last Wednesday
saw the first ever show-jumping competition in the fantastic
new arena, which was purpose built for the Special Olympic
World Summer Games in June. Indeed, following the games
the newly developed complex received rave reviews, and was
hailed as the best ever venue that the games had ever seen.
The arena itself is worth a visit, it has a very warm feeling
to it, it's a great size to compete in, and has excellent
footing, Cushion Track Supreme (Equestrian Surfaces), which
has been used at the World Cup Show jumping finals in Las
Vegas and The Horse of the Year Show.
"Last
June was a very special time at Kill and it has been very
rewarding to have received so many compliments about the
games and the centres' facilities. I even received a letter
from Special Olympics H.Q.s in Washington hailing 'the venue
and competition were the best ever', Fintan proudly says.

The
Akhal-Teke
Born to challenge the wind of the desert!
Divine horses, equine aristocrats, fabled steeds,
effulgent diamonds - such flowery epithets have been
lavished upon that unique equine breed - the Akhal-Teke.
Prized by Alexander the Great, Darius the Great, Genghis
Khan, Roman emperors, Marco Polo, and many others,
the Akhal-Tekes have served people for over 3,000
years.
Absolutely everything about this horse is unique,
outlandish and stunning. It is the most ancient breed
on earth. It is one of the most beautiful, elegant
and proud horses in the world. Its endurance and resistance
to heat are second to none.
|
The
Akhal-Tekes come from the Kara-Kum Desert in Turkmenia.
It is a place for the toughest people and equines.
The
Turkmens would never have survived without the Akhal-Teke,
and vice versa. Turkmens were the first desert people to
produce a horse ideal for the environment.
Todays Akhal-Teke is a race, sports and endurance
horse, and a riveting circus performer. Smaller Akhal-Tekes
make great Western horses because of their quickness.
