Horse
of the Year Show a Spectacular Success
As
the curtain came down last Sunday at the NEC Arena,
the 2002 Horse of the Year Show sponsored by Equestrian
Surfaces, was heralded a resounding success. Described
by Horse & Hound as 'a Triumph', the show attracted
record audiences across the entire week to the new
venue. The 8,000-seat arena was sold out for five
of the eight performances including the entire weekend.
The total attendance was over 55,000.
|
Director
Mark Wein of organisers Grandstand Media commented, 'To
move a fifty acre show and slot it into a new venue was
an awesome challenge. We were extremely pleased that the
intense planning meant that, from an infrastructure perspective,
things went relatively smoothly and the new facilities were
well received. It was obviously also a new challenge for
the venue and, with an increase on last year of over 10,000
people, there are a number of visitor management issues
which we will be addressing for next year.'
Sunday's
Gala Night, staged in the presence of royalty and a host
of celebrities saw the prolific Tony McCoy team up with
Jeff Osborne and John Whitaker to win the Hurry Scurry.
Going last in the jump off, Tim Stockdale won the biggest
prize of the show - the Grand Prix with Fresh Direct Parcival
and also took the award for the leading British Rider.
In
addition to the exceptional level of competition, the capacity
crowds were awe-struck by the unique display of trust and
liberty by Jean Francois Pignon and were entertained by
the British Young Riders Dressage Display Team's ride to
'Grease'.

Pfizer
helps Exmoor ponies
|
Pfizer
Ltd, the worlds leading pharmaceutical company has
donated drugs to the Moorland Mousie Trust to help retain
the value of the rare breed Exmoor pony. Pfizer
has provided the local anaesthetic Domosedan, free-of-charge
to enable the castration of the 14 colts on The Moorland
Mousie Trusts current gelding programme.
The Moorland Mousie Trust, granted charitable status in
2000, was established in order to support breeders with
the promotion and conservation of the Exmoor pony. Presently
there is no viable market for Exmoor colt foals. Through
a co-ordinated handling and gelding scheme the Moorland
Mousie Trust is working to create a market which would give
farmers and breeders some financial return for breeding
these ponies.
Selective castration ensures quality stock remain entire
while breeders can be sure that the colts which dont
quite meet the grade for breeding still have a market value
as gelded riding and driving ponies.

Horse Owner Receives a Second Ban
On
Monday 14th October, at Basildon Crown Court, an Essex
woman was given a 12 year ban on keeping horses and
a 4 month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
Sandra Carpenter, 50, of St. Margaret's Farm, Little
Burstead, was appealing against a ban of 10 years
and a suspended prison sentence of 6 weeks given to
her on 4 March this year at Basildon Magistrates Court
for causing unnecessary suffering to a grey broodmare,
who was subsequently euthanased, and a breach of a
ban imposed on her in 1993.
|
In
October 1993 she was banned from keeping horses for 20 years
for causing unnecessary suffering to 12 horses one of which
was ILPH Annie, but this was reduced to 10 years on appeal.
Says ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses)
Field Officer Michael Smith, "Ms Carpenter is no stranger
to Courts, but on appeal this Monday she wasn't quite so
lucky as she was in 1993. This time both her ban and her
suspended prison sentence were increased."

"High
Octane" Featured on Hollywood Park Invitationals
On July 25, 2002 Tom Chapman received a letter from
the Turf Club Director at Hollywood Park, Aimee Smith.
Aimee explained that she was looking for a new artist
to showcase during the year in the Turf Club and invited
Tom to be that artist. Feeling very proud, indeed
honored and overwhelmed by Aimee's letter, Tom began
painting our September 25 - November 1 Contest Painting.
The painting depicts 6 horses in a blanket finish
on the Hollywood Turf course. The painting is an 18''
x 36'' oil painting done on canvas. In addition to
inviting Tom to display his art in the Hollywood Turf
Club, Aimee asked if they could also use an image
of his painting "High Octane" to be used
on the invitations for their upcoming opening night
reception to be held Nov. 8.

Under Scrutiny At HOYS
SEIB
and BEF act to improve Olympic prospects
The
British Equestrian Federation, supported by South Essex
Insurance Brokers, has taken the first steps on a programme
designed to improve British sport horses - and to win Olympic
medals.
The
SEIB/BEF Young Horse Evaluation series drew sport horse
enthusiasts to the Horse of the Year Show at the National
Exhibition Centre Birmingham, for the culmination of a season-long,
nationwide search for future winners in all three disciplines
- eventing, showjumping and dressage.
And
after expert assessment covering conformation, performance
and temperament, the Brendon Stud's stallion, Caretino Glory,
emerged as not only the highest-marked showjumping horse
but also the best over all three disciplines.

"Can't Buy" New Search Champion!
Judges
praise the champions at HOYS final
Winner
of this year's South Essex Insurance Brokers Search
for a Star Supreme Championship at the Horse of the
Year Show was the show hunter Urishay, owned and ridden
by Elaine Place from Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire.
It
was the Place family's second attempt to win the title.
Daughter Laura, 20, competed unsuccessfully two years
ago, but this time it was mother, Elaine, with the
"safe" horse she bought so she could accompany
her daughter to shows who impressed the judges.
And
even before the Supreme judging, she was getting offers
for the six-year-old chesnut gelding. "There's
not enough money to even tempt me," she said.
"He's everything I want." |
Reserve
champion was the hunter pony Hurstead Quince, ridden by
11-years-old Amy Mitten from Flixton, Manchester. Amy, who
has been riding for three years, was distraught when she
lost her pony earlier this year and Quince was bought for
her when the replacement pony was sidelined.
Search
for a Star, now in its seventh year, was introduced by South
Essex Insurance Brokers to give amateur riders an opportunity
to compete at the prestigious Horse of the Year Show and
to identify future equine stars. "And it just gets
better and better," said judge Robert Oliver, himself
one of the leading producers and exhibitors of show horses.

The
Robinsons' Prince Philip Cup goes to the final game
of the final session to decide the winner. |
Last
week at the NEC Birmingham, the top six Pony Club Mounted
Games in the country fought long and hard to win the coveted
Robinsons' Prince Philip Cup. The
quality of competition was brilliant and no team should
be disappointed with their performance.
Eglinton
Hunt, the past masters of this competition, this year came
with a young team and their slight lack of experience meant
that they did not manage to get into the final four on the
Sunday evening. Robert Noble the Eglinton trainer commented,
"we'll be back next year with more experience and take
the cup back to its rightful home in Scotland."
With
only two games to go the battle really hotted up between
Wylye Valley and Oakley West. Wylye were trailing and rode
like demons to take two seconds and a first place over those
last three games. Oakley only had a two-point advantage
just one place. Oakley won the last but one game, putting
more pressure on Wylye. The last game went to Wylye but
Oakley came in second to clinch the Robinsons' Prince Philip
Cup by the narrowest of margins just two points.

Crickhowell
and District Pony Club Mounted Games Team prove that
they are just the best at stable management. |
It
is the first year the Crickhowell and District Pony Club
Mounted Games Team have qualified as one of the top six
Pony Club Mounted Games teams in the country -that in itself
is a huge achievement. They then competed for the Robinsons'
Trophy and the Robinsons' Prince Philip Cup at The Horse
Of The Year Show held in Birmingham over the last few days.
All
of the teams' ponies where stabled at Birmingham for the
week and as part of their duties, they had obviously to
care and look after their ponies, which were stabled in
temporary stables. How they cared for their ponies and how
tidy the stable yard was, was judged on a daily basis by
people from different areas within the horse world - which
this year included British International Show jumper, Di
Lampard. Over the week Crickhowell
has been consistent and took the title from teams with much
more experience than they had, such as Eglinton from Scotland
and Oakley West, Bedfordshire.

Mail
Order Service Totally Unaffected! |
Despite
the huge fire, which engulfed the Robinsons store on Thursday
19th September, their mail order business is totally unaffected.
Orders from both their new catalogue 2002/3 and the website
are being processed without any delays. Even store customers
are being tempted to make their purchases this way whilst
the store is out of action.
The Haydock store at almost 20,000 square feet was the largest
equestrian superstore in the UK, but just over five miles
away is their Call Centre and Warehouse, which at 74,000
square feet is over three times larger than the store. Stock
holding at the warehouse is almost five times the stock
value held in the store. Robinsons are still able to answer
and take an order from up to 3,000 calls per day. In terms
of sending out orders, in less than ten days they could
despatch enough orders to equal the value of all the stock
that was in the Store.
Marketing Manager Paul Bentham explained, "at this
stage, it's too early to say what we will do, but it's safe
to assume that we'll be back with a new store that will
be better than any other equestrian store in the world.
Despite all the upheaval, we see this as an opportunity
to create something better than anything anyone has seen
before. We now have the chance to put all our experience
of 20 years that we had in that building into a Store, which
meets the demands of today's customers. Nobody is better
able than us to make this happen. Our Store may have been
the biggest in the UK, but its success was achieved in an
old building with far fewer facilities available to us than
we would have liked."

A
Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
Is Sneakers a shy cat? Or is it just a human perception?
She doesn't cuddle up to humans. She usually hides
when folks come to visit.
She likes me, I think. But she doesn't want to sit
on my lap. She wants to sit in the mail "in-box."
When I'm writing, she curls up and sleeps in the "in-box."
She's close, but still distant.
|
When
I go to the barn, Sneakers goes along, but not to be with
me. She likes to keep up her social contacts.
She first visits with a horse named "Black." Black
is "Black" because "Black" is black.
Sneakers is black and white, but mostly black. Maybe that
is why she visits with the black horses and generally ignores
the others. Black is friendly in his way, but not too friendly.
At least Sneaker's behavior would make you think that. She
goes to visit him, but she wants little to do with him.
She meows, walks back and forth in front of his stall, looks
at him looking over the stall door at her, and then sits
without another word. I think it is her way of sitting in
his mail "in-box."

The Horse of the Year Show |
Wylye
Valley Pony Club Mounted Games rode superbly in the first
mounted games competition of the week, the Robinsons Trophy.
Wylye are competing at The Horse of the Year Show as one
of the six top team mounted games teams in the country -
from the initial 180 teams entered. Wylye came second in
the first round of the Robinsons' competition, but didn't
fair so well in the second round and dropped a place to

Prince Philip Cup.

Prince Philip Cup, which is the culmination for the Pony
Club Mounted Games teams and runs every day during the week
of The Horse of the Year Show. The Wylye Valley Team is:
brother and sister, James (13) and Michelle Stark (15) from
Stanton Drew riding their ponies Magic and Rossi, their
cousin Chris Clinton (13) from Chewton Mendip riding Misty,
Mary Chivers (14) from Stratton on the Fosse (Rosie), Tayah
Barrs (13) from Freshford (Bouncer) and reserve rider Vicky

This
year's British Equine Event, 2-3 November 2002 at Stoneleigh
Park, Warwickshire, is set to break new records! With
Christmas looming, organisers are anticipating another
successful show following a trade stand sell out and
last year's large increase in visitors..

well over 300 trade stands dealing in every conceivable
aspect of horse care and management, visitors will be
able to browse and buy at their leisure, whilst also
taking advice from specialist associations and horse
and pony societies. |
As
well as shopping, visitors can spend time watching stars
such as dressage impresario Conrad Schumacher or husband
and wife team, eventers Vere and Clea Phillipps, giving
lecture-demos in the event's purpose-built main arena.
Jam-packed
with seminars, the event offers a wide array of topics,
with audiences gaining an insight into current issues as
well as practical advice and tips on keeping a happy and
healthy horse. The weekend also includes a number of business
forums where visitors can also learn about anything from
avoiding the legal pitfalls of buying a horse though to
implementing breeding strategies and the future of equestrian
shopping!
