FEI Delegation’s visit to Athens (Gre)
On 15 October 2002, a delegation composed of the FEI President,
HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón Freddy Serpieri,
1st Vice President, and Catrin Norinder, Manager of the Olympic
Department visited Athens Organising Committee for the 2004 Olympic
Games (ATHOC).
The FEI delegation visited the equestrian site Markopoulos and
noted the progress of the construction work. Meetings including
detailed presentations were organised with ATHOC Executive Director
Spyros Capralos and Competition Manager Nicolas Karidis on transport
organisation, venue operations and competition management.
The official test event in Eventing will be organised from14 to
17 August 2003 in the frame of the official ATHOC test event including
several sports.
FEI World Cup Jumping
Western European League of the FEI World Cup started with three
Scandinavian events.
The 2002 / 2003 season of the Western European League of the FEI
World Cup Jumping started on 13 October 2002 in Helsinki’s
Hartwall Arena. Toni Hassmann on Goldika, already the winner in
Helsinki last year, beat 37 other competitors to take the early
lead in the point standings. In the 13 rider jump-off Hassmann
and his 10 year old Holstein mare beat Thomas Velin on Equest
Carnute and Norman dello Joio on Glasgow. The young Austrian Tatiana
Freytag, who had made a disappointing debut with Pialotta in Friday’s
qualifier, finished 4th on her WEG horse Time Kiss.
15 events are on the calendar for the Western European League
in the season 2002 / 2003. After Helskinki the series continues
in Oslo (NOR) (20 October), Aarhus (DEN) (26 October), Verona
(ITA) (10 November), Berlin (GER) (17 November), Geneva (SUI)
(15 December), London (GBR) 21 December and Mechelen (BEL) (29
December). Seven more event follows in the spring: Leipzig (GER),
Bordeaux (FRA), Vigo (ESP), Paris (FRA), Dortmund (GER), ‘s-Hertogenbosch
(NED) and Göteborg (SWE). The Final, the 25th since 1979,
is scheduled for 16 - 20 April 2003 in Las Vegas.
After four years with a World Cup starting field of 18 on Saturday,
the new season will have maximum 38 starters in each World Cup
competition. Maximum 33 riders, based on an elaborate invitation
scheme, are pre-qualified. All the other riders at the event must
qualify for the World Cup in a Friday qualifying competition,
which also serves to establish the starting order for the World
Cup.
The top 18 riders in the final standings of the Western European
League qualify for the Final in Las Vegas in April 2003. The defending
World Cup Champion, Otto Becker is automatically qualified.
FEI World Cup Dressage
DANIEL RAIMSEIER (SUI) WINS AGAIN IN KAPOSVAR. IRINA LIS (BLR)
IS THE CENTRAL EUROPEAN LEAGUE WINNER
The last of the 2002/2003 Central European league World Cup qualifiers
was held in Kaposvar, Hungary on 13 October 2002.
Top riders competed in the indoor arena of Agriculture University
of Kaposvar, all looking to gain points to qualify for the Final
to be held in Goteborg next Spring. The World Cup competition
was won by the Swiss Daniel Ramseier, who had won Kaposvar World
Cup in 2001.
The Central European league was represented by two riders from
Belarus (Irina Lis and Yeushchyk) and E. Sidneva, who is competing
for Western league. The host nation was represented by Sophia
and Guylla Dallos.
Daniel Ramseier competed with three horses and won five classes
out of six. In the S. Georg class, he was beaten by P. Gmoser
from Austria. The promising Hungarian rider Rika Szeicz on Furmit
was second finished second.
Seven nations were represented in Hungary. The most successful
rider of the Central European League was Irina Lis from Belarus.
On the 12 years old anglo-trakener Problesk she finished second
just behind Ramseier. At the end of the Central European League
seaon (including CDI-W in Minsk, Lipica, Ksiaz, Moscow and Kaposvar)
Irina Lis secured her place to the Final, thus becoming the first
rider representing Belarus to participate in a World Cup Final.

World Breeding Championship For Young Horses In Jumping In
Lanaken (Bel), 26 - 29 September 2002
6-year old horses: SBS-bred Mozart des Hayettes wins finals of
the 6-yr-olds, silver and bronze go to Studbook Zangersheide.
7-year old horses: Gold and silver for KWPN, bronze for Zangersheide
and Jos Lansink
The results of the two finals of the 5- and 6-yr-old youngsters
showed the dominance of the Belgian studbooks. The 5-yr-old category
was won by the BWP-bred Ultra-Top van’t Paradijs with Belgian
rider Johan Rooms and the world title in the category for 6-yr-olds
went to the SBS-bred Mozart des Hayettes (Papillon Rouge x Nimmerdor)
also ridden by a Belgian rider, Gregory Wathelet. The second and
third places went to Zangersheide with in 2nd place the British
Guy Goosen on Cayleigh Z and in 3rd place the Spanish Alfredo
Duran on the Z-branded Carpe Diem Z (Calvin Z x Cor de la Bryère.
KWPN won the 7-yr-olds final, when Peter Geerink on No Time (Epilot
x Almé Z) snatched the gold away before the nose of Australian
rider James Patterson-Robinson on Miss Hans (Wolfgang x Gambit).
The KWPN triumph was briefly hazarded by Jos Lansink, who piloted
AK Chellano Z (Contender x Cor de la Bryère) around fast
but just a few hundredths of seconds short to finish third.

After the press conference of the World Championship in Jerez,
the Top Ten Four-in-Hand Drivers chose their starting places for
the 2nd season of the World Cup Driving, as follows:

At
each event, a wild card is given to a home driver to arrive at
a starting field of six drivers.
The five top drivers after ‘s-Hertogenbosch are invited to
compete for the end of the Series in Göteborg (SWE) on 27
- 30 March 2003.
World Equestrian Games Endurance
The FEI set up an inquiry to investigate the circumstances of
the death of two horses during the Endurance ride of the World
Equestrian Games on 16 September 2002 in Jerez de la Frontera
(ESP). Sir Fire, ridden by Anna Maxenchs Serra (ESP), died after
having completed the course and Floyd, ridden by Nik Isahak Wan
Abdullah (MAS), on course during the fourth loop. The report has
just been finalised by the FEI enquiry team, composed of Prof
Leo Jeffcott, Chairman of the Veterinary Committee, Dr Hallvard
Sommerseth, Chairman of the Endurance Committee and Technical
Delegate for Endurance at the 2002 World Equestrian Games, Frits
Sluyter, Head of the FEI Veterinary Department and Michael Stone,
FEI Sports Director and head of the Endurance discipline.
The Secretary General will send both reports to the Judicial Committee
for consideration as per article 143.1.4 of the FEI General Regulations
(abuse of horse).

According to the FEI legal system, the Persons Responsible (i.e.
the riders) will receive a copy of the complete report and have
10 days to send his/her written comments to the FEI. Both riders
may request a hearing before the Judicial Committee. Once the
Judicial Committed has rendered its decision, the Person Responsible
has 30 days to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Enquiry team made a list of recommendations for rules changes
for consideration by the Endurance Committee. They include areas
such as stewarding, number of vet gates and distances between
them, qualifications, monitoring during the course, role and selection
of officials. It is expected that proposal for changes to the
Endurance rules be presented at the next FEI General Assembly
at the end of April 2003 for immediate implementation.
I.P.E.C. World Championships For Carriage Drivers With Disabilities
The IPEC World Diving Championship was organised in Westphalia
at the St Martin’s Carriage Driving Centre of Greven Bockholt
from 25 to 29 September 2002. Excellent competition and warm-up
arenas for Dressage and Cones competitions; were put at the disposal
of the disabled drivers. The 10-km long Marathon included five
obstacles within easy walking distance and which could be viewed
from large raised banks for spectators. The World Championship
was blessed with a wonderful weather and an excellent atmosphere.
Except one Canadian driver, all competitors brought their own
horses. Twenty three drivers competed, representing Austria, Canada,
Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden,
and USA.
The competition was integrated within the German National Driving
Championships for Horse Pairs and Pony Teams. It was well organised,
and the good scoring system allowed the spectators to understand
well the I.P.E.C. Grade system.

Further to the successful Forum organised last year, A Global
Dressage Forum will be organised again on 21 and 22 October 2002.
Among the main items on the agenda: evaluation by a judges panel,
chaired by Mariette Withages (chairman of the FEI dressage committee),
a trainers panel of the results of the WEG in Jerez. and a breeding
seminar, presented by Dr. Klaus Miesner, breeding manager of the
German National Federation at Warendorf.

Central American Games and Carribean Games
THE XIX Central American and Carribbean Games will take place
in San Salvador (ESA) from 30 November to 6 December. The Games
will include Jumping, Dressage, Eventing and Endurance competitions.
