Air
Ambulance Foundation reveals 40 per cent increase in call
outs to riding accidents
19 September 2003 The latest statistics released
by the Air Ambulance Foundation (AAF) reveal a significant
increase in the number of emergency call-outs requiring
assistance from air ambulances. Sporting incidents, in particular
horse riding, show the greatest increase overall with call
outs to horse-related injuries up by 40 per cent on last
year; this represents an additional cost to air ambulances
of £120,000 in just six months alone.
The report, which contains information collated from the
15 regional air ambulance services across the UK, shows
an overall increase of 16 per cent over the same period
in 2002 (January to June). In human terms, this means that
an additional 1,000 people many suffering life-threatening
conditions benefited from the fast and flexible response
which has become the trademark of the air ambulance service.
With each air ambulance mission costing £1,000, this
has meant that air ambulances have had to find an additional
£1 million pounds in the last six months.

All I Want For Christmas Is A Bot-Free Horse
Bots aren't a parasite that necessarily spring
to mind when planning your horse's worming programme, however
bot infestation can have potentially dangerous results.
Bots aren't worms, but the larvae of the horse bot fly,
which attach themselves to the abdomen, legs and the throat
of grazing horses in late summer. The horse then licks them
off and the larvae attach to the stomach lining where they
develop into full-grown bots which can cause ulcers in the
stomach wall and can occasionally penetrate the wall with
fatal results.
A
single dose of Vectin, one of the wormers featured in Intervet's
3-year worming plan, should be administered after first
frosts have killed adult flies in December. The apple flavoured
gel, which contains ivermectin as its active ingredient,
is available in an easy-dose syringe and is suitable for
use in foals and pregnant mares.

British
Riding Club National Championships Lincoln - 13th &
14th September 2003
British
Riding Clubs (BRC) celebrated their most successful
championships in history during the weekend of 13th
and 14th September 2003. With entries topping any previously
recorded level, and unseasonably good weather, the atmosphere,
venue and competitors were second to none. This year
also marks the 50th anniversary of affiliation to the
British Horse Society and to celebrate, parties were
held on both the Friday and Saturday evenings to allow
all competitors to join in the celebration. |
Saturday
13th September kicked off with the senior finalists. A staggering
16 dressage arenas were in action, featuring preliminary
to international levels of dressage, plus four jumping rings
with novice and open jumping and our own Equitation Jumping
final in which marks are awarded for style and riding. The
open ring attracted a big crowd with its testing track in
a truly grand arena.

Samsung
Super League News : It's Not Over Yet..............
With
just four days to go the Final of the first Samsung
Super League series in Barcelona it seems that France
must be firm favourites to take the title but, after
a season full of surprises, can we be so sure?
Who
could have predicted at the beginning of the year
that the French would be so dominant, with three
outright victories and an exceptionally consistent
run of form? It is difficult enough to put together
a team of horses and riders capable of winning one
major championship but, in the space of 12 months,
the French are World Champions and European Silver
medallists, yet still managed to head the Samsung
Super League leaderboard throughout the entire series
their strength in depth is nothing short
of remarkable.
|
The
Irish too have been surprisingly effective although they
have faltered in the latter stages. They can always be relied
upon to put in their very best effort at the most unlikely
times and few would have expected them to head the line-up
at two of the toughest rounds of the Super League in St
Gallen and Aachen. They were snapping at the heels of the
French until things went horribly wrong for them at the
penultimate leg in Rotterdam but, still in second position
and ready to pounce should the long-time leaders find themselves
in trouble, they can never be discounted.

From
Great Britain to Hong Kong - The British Horse Society,
with the help of Elise Pilkington Trust and riding schools,
offers a taste of success to young riders |
The
BHS Equitation Competition 2003/2004 is off to a great start!
Successful competitions have already been held in London,
Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Buckinghamshire, West Sussex
and Ireland, and future competitions are being held as far
a field as Hong Kong!
The
original aim of the competition was to give young riders,
who do not own their own horse or pony, the opportunity
to compete in a nationwide competition, but with a qualifier
for this year in Hong Kong the success of the competition
is rapidly growing.
Qualifiers
are held at BHS Approved Riding Establishments, and there
are two age groups for the competition - 13 years and under
and 17 years and under. Competitors are required to complete
a short dressage test, a jumping test and a short multiple
choice, welfare orientated, question paper, in order to
demonstrate not only their riding abilities, but also to
ensure they have a basic understanding of horse care and
welfare.

Australia
- The Fraser Island Wild Horse (brumby) story/campaign
Not to be confused with the Palm Island brumby issue
where some brumbies were treated badly by a minority group.
The Queensland Government Department of Environment,
under the control of Environment Minister Mr Dean Wells,
has illegally removed about eleven brumbies from Fraser
Island, off the Queensland coast. A contract was given to
Ms Shirley Gott by the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service
(QPWS) to remove these brumbies. The initial information
received was that she was going to remove about 6 brumbies
for breeding purposes. It was later heard that she had removed
eleven brumbies of which some would be used for breeding
and some for riding at her riding school, and some for adoption/sale.
After Lyall Sempf had some discussions with a couple of
indigenous (aboriginal) elders who have traditional land
rights over Fraser Island, it has been confirmed that the
original horses brought over to the island belonged to the
ancestors of some traditional owners, and that they want
the brumbies to remain on the island. There are also aspirations
by some indigenous owners to use the brumbies for tourism
purposes. Under Native Title Law and Common law, these brumbies
actually belong to the ndigenous people, and hence the removal
of these brumbies is considered as straight-out daylight
theft. The brumby removal issue has caused major upset to
traditional owners and the general brumby advocate community,
with the indigenous people now taking this issue to the
federal court level.

The
Boulonnais Horse
Boulonnais horses are said to be descended from Numidian
horses, brought by J. Caesar to North of France, around
Boulogne, in 54 B.C., just when he was planning to invade
Britain. But this can be a legend.
The Boulonnais horse is called "the thoroughbred
horse among draught horses" because of its great
elegance associated with strength.
Energetic and lively, with a splendid gait, adaptated
to prestige carriage as well as to every work in the
fields and even to riding, the Boulonnais horses were
especially appreciated since 17th century for the rapid
transport of the fresh fish from the Channel coast to
Paris, in less than 24 hours. This is now commemorated
every two years in a traditional team race called "La
route du poisson" (The Fish Route).

Learning From Horses: Patterns and Habits.
WAVERLY,
WV--Horses are creatures of habit. And the habits they
learn can be good ones or bad ones depending on who's
handling them. And whatever habits or patterns they
have when they come to you can be changed if you go
about it in a methodical, horse-logical way. If memory
serves, one of the horses that taught me this was a
Morgan stallion that belonged to a friend of mine. This
was back in the '60s and I don't remember the horse's
registered name but we called him Little Brother.

Horse Society and Ashby House TREC teams return triumphant
from World and European Championships
The
British Horse Society Senior World TREC and Ashby House
Young Rider European TREC Championship teams returned
triumphantly from Libramont in Belgium last weekend
(5-7 September) with two team medals and an individual
medal. The Senior World Team won the Silver medal, with
the Young Riders, appearing at their first European
Championships, taking team Bronze and individual Gold.
Four individual riders, two in each competition, also
rode well to complete the squad representing Great Britain. |
Both
competitions provided good championship courses and a few
anxious moments for most competitors, testing their orienteering
skills with technically challenging routes through the woods.
A demanding PTV course for the Young Riders provided some
very interesting obstacles including a bridge set high off
the ground and a particularly difficult water crossing.
