Britain's
leading veterinary charity, PDSA, and Art Attack presenter
Neil Buchanan, are suggesting an alternative gift for
young animal lovers this Christmas, membership of PDSA's
young people's club - Pet Protectors. |

is a stressful and hectic time for the whole family and
is definitely not the ideal time to introduce a new pet,"
says Neil Buchanan, Art Attack presenter and Pet Protectors
Club President.
"Membership
of PDSA's Pet Protectors club, however, is an ideal present,
providing children with a year of opportunity to discover
the real responsibilities of owning and caring for a pet,"
continues Neil Buchanan.
The
Pet Protectors club is open to young people aged five to
sixteen years old. Membership is £6.50 and those signing
up to the club receive a free gift, personalized membership

Helpless
in the Heat
Transporting
your horse can be very stressful in cool weather, however
in the heat the potential hazards that can arise when travelling
dramatically increase.
In
light of the recent heatwaves across the country, ESS (Equestrian
Support Services) have produced a series of guidelines to
ensure you keep your horse safe in the heat.
"
Firstly, if you have any concerns about your horse's health
get a vet to check your horse over before you travel.
"
Always ensure that if your horse has been exercised that
it has cooled off prior to travelling.
"
Make frequent stops. Offer the horse small amounts of water
every few hours when it is hot, as horses often refuse to
drink when travelling. Ensure that the water is not cold.
ESS do not recommend feeding horses in transit on short
journeys.
"
Give the horse plenty of room to move it's head. Do not
tie them on too short a rope, and ensure that they have
good airflow by opening any side or roof vents in the horsebox.
"
Try to limit transport to cooler parts of the day (i.e.
very early in the morning or late in the evening), not only
is this more comfortable for the horse but your journey
will be easier as there will be less traffic.
"
ESS also stress the importance of ensuring that your trailer
is in good repair and that you keep an emergency safety
kit in your trailer.

How
World Cup Points Are Earned
Gladstone,
NJAugust 12, 2003There are two Show Jumping
World Cup leagues in the United States - East Coast
League and West Coast League. The record of the points
earned by riders (not horse-and-rider combinations)
at CSI-W competitions in these leagues is maintained
by the United States Equestrian Team (USET).
In general, riders qualify for the Final in the league
in which they live. Points may only be earned during
the time period of a riders home league.
Foreign riders competing in one of the U.S leagues
may qualify for the Final from one of the U.S. Leagues,
as long as they reside in the United States and gain
at least as many points as the lowest-placed competitor
qualified for the Final in the league in which they
live. This rule applies to Canadian riders living,
and competing in World Cup qualifying classes, in
the U.S. as well as to riders from other countries.

The
Big Ben Project : For the Love of a Horse
Perth
Ontario Canada, where Ian Millar makes his home, is making
an effort to honour one of Canadas most successful
pairs in sport and arguably, the greatest team in Equestrian
history.
Millar
and his late mount Big Ben, the 17.3 hh Belgium Warmblood
who died in December 1999 at the age of 23, won the hearts
of fans the world over and made their mark in the Equestrian
world. They appeared in the Olympics together three times
and won two gold medals at the Pan Am Games The pair had
5 consecutive top eight world cup finishes, including back
to back titles in 1988 and 1989, and they took home more
than 40 Grand Prix victories. Millar and Ben won the Derby
at Spruce meadows six times in eight years; they represented
Canada in more than 30 Nations Cups and they won the worlds
richest Grand Prix twice, the Du Maurier International.
It is believed Big Ben was the first North American show

Perths
Chamber of Commerce has launched a project to erect an arresting
bronze statue of Millar and Big Ben in a picturesque park
setting along the banks of the Tay River in beautiful downtown

The
Equestrian Security Concept
Equestrian
& Farming communities are seeing an ever increasing
rise in theft & damage to property, the members
are also aware of their Insurance cover rising in
response, The problems arise in Prevention, Trace-ability,
Identification, & Recovery, of Tack, Horseboxes,
Isolated Farm Buildings / Stables, and Farm Vehicles.
I.R.D.Ltd of Chichester West Sussex, in the U.K.
are working in Association with the Master Saddle
Makers of the Walsall Equestrian Society, to place
a Radio Frequency tag in their Saddles whilst at
the manufacturing stage, this allows a security
system that identifies each stage of ownership from
manufacturer, retailer, customer, and if required
Insurance Company. This tag would be very difficult
to remove without the skills of a Master Saddler,
should a thief try to dispose of this tag, he would
destroy the saddle rendering it useless to re-sale.

Horse Show - Schroder Wins Samsung Grand Prix At Dublin,
O'Connor Again Takes Leading Rider Trophy
WITH
both the defence of the European Championship and
the seventh leg of the Samsung Super League coming
up within weeks, Ireland's Billy Twomey and Cian O'Connor
rode understandably cautious opening rounds in the
Grand Prix at Dublin today (Sunday), but the two riders
nevertheless made it to the seven-horse jump-off,
with clears.
|
However,
in the second round, O'Connor on <Waterford Crystal>
took one fence down in an otherwise steady round, but Twomey
managed a classic clear on <Luidam> without sacrificing
speed. Unfortunately, Netherlands rider Wim Schroder on
the 10 year-old bay gelding <Eurocommerce Montreal>
also went clear, but was just over a second faster than
Twomey on Linda Allen's very testing course, and could not
be beaten by any of the remaining finalists.
O'Connor
ended in Sixth position, but his consistently top class
performance during the last five days earned him the show's
Leading Rider Trophy for the second year in succession.

Now,
just what is a Pintabian?
The
Pintabian is a breed of horse that must be verified
as to having 99% or more of purebred Arabian blood,
with a tobiano coat pattern. Tobiano, color pattern,
is non-symmetrical , with large, irregular spots.
There are only about 500 Registered Pintabians in the
world, making them a rare and valulable breed.
The well-defined spots cover the body and usually crosses
the topline at some point between the ears and tail.
The head is usually colored with white markings, common
to those of non-spotted horses. The legs are most often
white on all four. All Tobianos are unique and can range
from a mostly white horse to that of very little white,
with the ideal being that of 50% color and 50% white.
Pintabians
are bred for their beauty, intelligence, disposition,
stamina, and are very versatile. They have a short dished
head, that is wide-set between large eyes, long arched
neck, short back, level hip, and high tail carriage.
The general height range is between 14.2 and 15.2, with
a few individuals over or under that height and weigh
between 900 and 1,100 pounds Pintabians are ideal for
pleasure, showing, competitive and endurance sports,
driving, racing, or just family fun

Horse Show - Smyth Wins Masters, O'Connor Joint Second
In Puissance
OBVIOUSLY
a rider to be watched, Peter Smyth from Omagh in Co.
Tyrone today (Saturday) won the ebookers Masters on
his first year at international level at the Dublin
Horse Show.
Meanwhile,
Kildare's 23 yr old Cian O'Connor came within a whisker
of repeating his magic 2002 Puissance win, but his
new mount <Irish Independent Absolon>, failed
in the final three-horse jump-off, giving the win
to Britain's veteran Michael Whitaker on <Da Capo>.
|
Smyth
(33) took his former trotter, the Irish-bred <Zara's
Pride> from national Grand Prix level to international
status this week with a sixth in Thursday's Speed Derby
and a convincing win today in the Masters. Taking second
in the Masters, Clem McMahon raised his score in the Leading
Rider category for Dublin and is now a point ahead of Harry
Marshall, also from Co. Tyrone.
Marshall
had a rapturous reception from the huge Dublin crowd who
turned out to watch the Puissance on a hot, overcast afternoon,
but although he twice smacked the coping on the giant wall,
managed to stay in the running up until the very last round,
when the height maxed out at 2m16, and his Irish-bred bay
gelding <XL> finally dislodged the bricks.
