LSU Researchers Investigate Role of Endothelin-1 in
Equine Respiratory Disease
BATON ROUGE - Two LSU researchers in the School of
Veterinary Medicine received a $164,000 grant from the United States Department
of Agriculture (National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program) to
investigate endothelin-1, a naturally occurring substance in humans and
animals, and its role in equine recurrent airway obstruction (RAO).
RAO is a common equine respiratory condition
characterized by bronchoconstriction, pulmonary inflammation, increased mucus
secretion, and pulmonary emphysema in later stages of the disease. It is
identified in horses with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) and summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease
(SPAOPD), both also known as "heaves."
COPD commonly affects the lower respiratory system
of horses in the northern United States during the winter months. SPAOPD is a
similar disease affecting the lower respiratory system, but is more commonly
seen in Louisiana and other southern states when horses are out to pasture.
Heaves is similar to asthma in humans because it
is believed to be an allergic-mediated, inflammatory disease of the lower
airways. Horses affected with it generally develop severe coughing, mucus
plugging of the airways, and have difficulty breathing, especially at the end
of expiration.

BHS Warning On Horse Lick
Deaths
The BHS has received disturbing evidence that
horses have died from severe colic after swallowing so called "horse
licks". The molasses blocks are designed to be put in a horse's stable,
for horses to lick on an occasional basis. When eaten in quantity the molasses
may impact food in the gut and cause a blockage. |
The BHS is recommending that owners should only
use these products when they are placed in a suitable container that cannot be
opened by the horse. Ideally, there should be only a small area of the block
accessible encouraging the horse to lick rather than bite and chew. Blocks
should not be left loose in the feed manger or on the floor of the stable.

"Natural Western Riding"
Cathy Hanson, trainer of AQHA
champions in western pleasure, western riding and trail, lends her talents to
the rewriting of Natural Western Riding, a book which has been a classic for
more than 20 years.
Hanson is authoring a new section of the book entitled, Mastering Trail
Courses. Natural Western Riding, which has been used as the text for western
courses in nearly a dozen equine college programs, was originally authored by
Don Blazer and published in 1979. The book was the first to detail every rider
aid and cue for every western exercise. In addition to explaining what the
rider must do, the book tells each of the horse's footfall sequences for every

Building Your Mailing List
There are many ways to get your horse
services and/or product into the mind of your client or buyer. Some of these
methods are: advertising in newspapers, magazines, radio, television,
billboards and other signage, direct mail, promotional materials with your
logo, internet, telemarketing..The list is a long one, and it can frequently be
difficult to decide where to spend your marketing time and money. A good
marketing plan will make use of a variety of tools based on who, and how many,
that particular tool targets and reaches.
Direct mail is a widely used marketing tool of small businesses of all kinds.
It provides an effective method for your horse business to stay in the front of
your client and prospects minds. Your mailing list is the backbone of your
direct mail program, and a valuable asset for your horse business. If you don't
have a mailing list you can start now to build one.

Todd Minikus and What Nu
Out-Jump Six Olympians to Win $100,000 Cosequin® Grand Prix at HITS
Catskills IV |
ELLENVILLE, NY (July 29, 2001)--Todd Minikus, the
U.S. Olympic Team Alternate at Sydney, won the $100,000 Cosequin® Grand
Prix at HITS Catskills IV in Ellenville, New York, today aboard What Nu.
Minikus out-jumped a field of 29 that included six Olympians--three of his
Sydney teammates, two U.S. Team Silver Medallists, and seven-time Canadian
Olympic team member Ian Millar. In a seven-horse jump-off that produced six
double-clear rounds, Minikus, 39, of Loxahatchee, Florida, was the fastest,
beating Margie Engle on Hidden Creek's Jones by just .285 seconds. He also
placed third with his Olympic team mount, Oh Star.
"It's nice to have a pair of horses that are international caliber,
world-class horses. I'm a lucky guy to be able to ride them and to know that
both of them are extremely careful especially under the pressure of the speed
that I go at," said Minikus. "Oftentimes people say, 'Todd rides too
fast in the jump-off', and I don't think that's true. I think the horses are
too slow. Finally I've got a pair of horses that can go as fast as I can
ride."

Training Mythunderstandings - Why Good
Training Starts on the Ground
When some students first arrive here at Meredith
Manor they don't see the point of the ground work we call "heeding."
Moving their horses around on the ground doesn't seem very exciting. They're
impatient to get in the saddle and start riding. |
They might jabber something about
"respect" or herd hierarchy or some other mumbo jumbo if I pushed
them to come up with a reason why the ground work was important. But they
really don't see much connection between how they, say, lead their horse from
the barn to the arena and how they ask that horse to canter.
The horse experiences everything you do when you're with him as a positive or
negative feeling. Positive feelings or experiences are non-stressful and keep
the horse relaxed. Negative experiences are stressful, raise the horse's
excitement level and make the horse tense. A horse must be relaxed before he
can pay attention and learn. The horse that's tense is just looking for a way
to get out of Dodge. And if he can't find one, he'll either blow or he'll shut
down, depending on his inclination. There's no learning in going on with either
one.
