Olaf Petersen, the international course designer who has
been building fences here since the beginning, always enjoys
coming to this Italian show. Not only because of the international
atmosphere, but also because of the people. The German national
builds courses all around the world but this one has a particular
human aspect to it: " Years ago a program was created
here to help people. That spirit is to be felt all around
this arena when I come here to build the courses. If I leave
here, I always feel content about my work and the people.
Usually I only need one hour to change an arena into a perfect
course, here we have the time to take 6! There is not too
much pressure during the day, giving us the opportunity
to talk to each other and get to know each other better."

How
Hoof Proof are your feet?

horse rider is exposed to a horse accidentally treading
on their feet.

accident can happen in a flash of a second, often
resulting in, at best a bruise and at worst broken
toes. There are all kinds of risks at the stables,

Michael
Dorman Dominated $2,500 Open Jumper Class At Vermont Summer
Festival Horse Show
East
Dorset, VT—July 17, 2002—On Wednesday, Michael
Dorman of Jamison, PA, dominated the $2,500 Open Jumper
Class riding four horses and coming in first, fourth and
sixth place at the Manchester Classic Horse Show, part of
the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival at Harold Beebe Farm in
East Dorset, VT.
Dorman had plenty of opportunities to get to know the course
by the time he rode his fourth horse and ultimate winner,
Enzo La Mulotiere, owned by Caroline Lloyd. Dorman set the
pace with a clear round going first in the class on Eliot
Du Quesnoy, owned by Erica Pritz, but came up with four
faults in the jump-off. His next mount was Femalin, owned
by Caroline Lloyd. The pair had a double clear round and
a jump-off time of 36.255 seconds. Dorman’s third chance
in the class was on Felix des Vents, owned by Wyndmont,
Inc. This time Dorman had another double clear, but a slower
jump-off time of 40.912.

Show Jumping Team For European Championships
The
Holmestead Saddlery Junior European Championship Show Jumping
Team has been selected following a training and competition
programme which the National Young Rider and Junior Committee
of the SJAI drew up earlier in the year.
Under the auspices of Commdt John Ledingham, the riders
attended viewing days in Cavan, Cahir and Kill and were
monitored in their performance at specified shows during
the season. Specific training days were designated and carried
out at Suzanne Macken's.

World Mourns Loss Of Legendary Equestrian "Cappy"
Smith
Legendary
equestrian, Morton "Cappy" Smith of Newport,
RI and Middleburg, VA, passed away this morning, Wednesday,
July 17, 2002.

Cappy
Smith was a 2000 recipient of the Pegasus Medal of Honor
awarded by USA Equestrian, and was inducted in to the Show
Jumping Hall of Fame in 1991, the National Show Hunter hall
of Fame in 1998 and was an inductee of the Virginia Horse
Show Association's Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a Director
of the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto, CAN, and Master of the
Orange County Hunt in Middleburg.

Department of Agriculture Publishes Fit To Sale Brochure
"Fit for Sale",has been published by the PA Dept.
of Agriculture, PDA.This is a brochure with _guidelines_
for the sale of horses in PA. It includes a description
and pictures on body condition, blindness, lameness (shows
an overgrown hoof) lesions and wounds (shows a picture of
wounds on a leg) it also list other disease that makes selling
a debilitated horse illegal in PA. It also has the PA Anti
Cruelty Law, Title 18, Section 5511(d). This law is in the
Crimes Code and can be enforced by police and humane agents.
Horses that are less than a 3 on the Henneke Body Scoring
Condition Chart cannot be offered for sale in PA under the
PA Anti Cruelty Law. The Henneke Chart can be found at:

To
assist in educating the public regarding this law, the PDA
is distributing these brochures to anyone who requests them
for free to distribute at auctions, sales and anywhere horse

While the expectation for the decision of the International
federation about the San Patrignano candidature to host
the European Jumping Show Championships 2005 is growing,
the arena of the largest European Community for drug addicts
is opening its doors, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21, to the
VI International Jumping Show "Challenge Vincenzo Muccioli".
Three competitions a day, 45 riders (10 within the first
thirty of the world ranking) and 120 horses, representing
16 Countries, a prize-money of 220.000 €, grass arena
of 110 m x 90 m, new covered grandstands able to host up
to 2500 attendees, are the numbers of an event that in a
very few years, as Giacomo Muccioli (President of the Show)
said, gained an important place among the big events of
the worldwide equestrians: "We got several recognitions
in Italy and abroad for the quality of our work, and we
created a strong and fruitful relationship with the FISE
but we want to do even better. The candidature to the European
Championships it is a new, important, objective that we
strongly wish to achieve. It would be an unprecedented event
in the whole worldwide sports to organize such an event
within a community for the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

message against drugs and social outcast and the main characters

Training Bursary For SkillHORSE Champion
Derby
College has pledged support for SkillHORSE and shown their
commitment by offering a £1000 training bursary for
the SkillHORSE Champion. The winner of this prestigious
prize will be decided at SkillCity - The Skills Show, to
be held from 13-16 November 2002 in Manchester.
SkillCity will be the largest and most exciting gathering
of skills in Europe. Organized by UK Skills and The Prince's
Trust it aims to inspire and motivate young people by demonstrating
opportunities for their future careers whilst also acting
as a showcase of the UK's skills to the rest of the world.
Over 80,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, the
vast majority being young people. There will also be numerous
media, sporting and political figures in attendance over
the four days.
SkillHORSE will involve competitions, displays by leading
riders and "have-a-go" activities for visitors.
It will promote vocational skills in the horse industry,
to recognise and celebrate the achievement of those working
in the industry and to raise standards. The competition
is aimed at young people on Work Based Learning programmes
supported by the Learning and Skills Council and working
toward Level 3 in Horse Care and Management, or those who
have achieved NVQ Level 3 no earlier than June 2002.

"Rain" becomes official American Paint Horse
|
FORT
WORTH, Texas-"Rain," the animated co-star in the
popular movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, became an
"official" Paint Horse recently, when the American
Paint Horse Association (APHA) awarded her an honorary registration
certificate.
Rain
is the first animated horse to receive a registration certificate
from APHA, which has registered more than 670,000 American
Paint Horses to date. About 70 percent of those horses have
been registered in the past 10 years, making the American
Paint Horse one of the fastest-growing horse breeds in the
world.
APHA
chose to honor Rain with the certificate in recognition
of the widespread exposure the Paint Horse receives in the
film, which generated more than $65 million in gross box
office sales in its first four weeks.

Teams
For WEG Will Be Announced At Hickstead
Britain's
top dressage riders will be on tenterhooks throughout the
All England Dressage Derby at Hickstead (24-28 July) as
they await the announcement of the Team for the World Equestrian
Games to be held in Jerez, Spain, in September. The Dressage
Derby is held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Royal
International Horse Show and the final selection of WEG
team members will be announced at Hickstead during the show.
Dressage riders Nicky Barrett, Dr Wilfrid Bechtolsheimer,
Richard Davison, Carl Hester and Peter Storr, all on the
World Class Performance Programme and potential team members,
are expected to be competing their top horses at Hickstead.
The other potential team members, Emile Faurie, Laura Richardson

open to children and adults. This contest is designed

States Drivers Place Second at CAIO/CAIP-A Breda
Gladstone,
NJ—July 15, 2002— The United States Equestrian
Team (USET) driving team of James Fairclough of Newton,
NJ, Tucker Johnson of Oldwick, NJ and Chester Weber
of Ocala, FL, combined to place second at CAIO/CAIP-A
Breda in Breda, The Netherlands out of a field of
seven competing teams. This is the best finish of
an American Four-In-Hand team in a Nations cup type
competition.
With each phase allowing for one drop score, the team
was third in the dressage phase of the competition
with a score of 90.72 penalties combining Johnson’s
score of 43.52 and Weber’s score of 47.2. In
the marathon phase, the U.S team again placed third
combining Johnson’s score of 90.14 penalty points
with Weber’s score of 98.92 penalty points to
finish the second phase of competition with a total
of 189.06 penalty points.

Warmblood Studbook Announces Annual Inspections
The
Dutch Warmblood Studbook in North America (NA/WPN),
the North American department of the Royal Warmblood
Studbook of the Netherlands (KWPN), will be holding
its annual "Keuring" tour (inspection and
evaluation of breeding stock) from September 6 to
Oct 8, 2002. The tour includes four sites in Canada
and nine in the U.S.
The
goal of the Keuringen, or inspections, is to improve
the breed by evaluating issues relating to athleticism,
conformation, soundness, character, temperament and
type.

Studbook
classes will be offered at all locations for mares and geldings,
as well as premium grading classes for young horses. Classes
for stallion approval will be offered at Iron Spring Farm
in Pennsylvania and DG Bar Ranch in California. In addition,
a full schedule of Dutch Harness Horse (DHH or Tuigpaard)
classes will be offered at Pegasus Equine Center in Ohio.

Stevenson Wins the $10,000 Mini Prix Jumper Class At Vermont
Summer Festival Horse Show
East
Dorset, VT—July 12, 2002—Vanessa Stevenson joined
the list of winners at the Vermont Summer Festival Horse
Show by besting a field of 24 in the $10,000 Mini Prix Jumper
class on Friday, July 12, 2002, at Harold Beebe Farm, in
East Dorset, VT, riding Galiana, owned by Robert Ross.
The
19-year-old resident of Southampton, NY was the first of
nine to go clean and the fastest in the jump-off with a
time of 32.845 seconds. Ezequiel Peralta of Oriedo, FL came
in second with the only other double clear in a time of
34.129 aboard Charming Z, owned by Wendy Ritter & Seabreeze
Farm. Third place went to Canada’s Mario Deslauriers
riding Amica.
The
Mini Prix class is similar to Grand Prix, but the jumps
are slightly lower. The highest fence was set at about five
feet, but the course looked a lot bigger to Stevenson as
she entered the ring. “I was a little nervous,”
said the young rider. “The fences looked really big,
but Galiana was awesome.”

Dorset, VT—July 14, 2002—Last turned out to be
best for Kenneth Berkley of Flemington, NJ, who won the
$35,000 Battenkill Grand Prix, sponsored by the Stratton
Mountain Inn, on Sunday, during the Vermont Summer Festival
Horse Show at Harold Beebe Farm, in East Dorset, VT.
Berkley
and Laredo, owned by October Farm and Rivers Edge, turned
in the only faultless performance in the United States Equestrian
Team (USET) - recognized event.Only
two went clean in the filed of 21 horses, Berkley and Meredith
Taylor, 25, of Pembroke, MA, riding Equifit Pizarro, owned
by ABC Limited, who was 19th in the order.
Berkley
liked the fact that he was the last to go.“I
had an excellent spot,” said Berkley. “At that
point, I knew I just had to go clean to make the jump-off.
My horse is very experienced, this course was not a big
stretch for him.”

Logical Body Building
WAVERLY,
WV Horse training is a mental game played in a physical
medium. Here at Meredith Manor, we use a system we
call “heeding” to teach students the rules
of the mental games they play with their horses. They
learn how to use corridors of methodically applied,
horse-logical pressures to show, ask, and eventually
tell their horses what shapes they want them to take.
|
They
also need to methodically develop their horse’s physical
abilities in order to play whatever game they’ve decided
they like whether it’s dressage or reining or jumping
or cutting or whatever. Like any athlete, a baby horse needs
to learn how to use his body the right way. He has to find
his balance. He needs to build his muscles, his strength,
in order to play our games.
If
a student came to me and asked for advice on how to develop
strong stomach muscles and I told him to start doing 200
crunches daily, his muscles would be pretty sore after the
first day. He might be mentally sore at me, too, and probably
disinclined to listen to any more of my advice. But if I’d
advised him to do 20 crunches for several days, then to
add another 10 for several days, and then another 10 and
so on, he would eventually get up to that 200 a day without
getting so sore he be discouraged.

Six
English Ladies In Turkmenistan
It
was a real dilemma. What do you do when you find yourself,
at 4 a.m., in a tent on a high plateau in the mountains
of Turkmenistan, the gurgling noises of your lurching
stomach competing with the howling of the jackals?
Do you go out and hope you do not meet a snake or
a scorpion? Do you stay in and hope to hang on until
daybreak? In the end I had little option. So I unzipped
my tent and cautiously tiptoed through the wiry clumps
of spiky grass away from the camp until I found a
convenient furrow. The muezzin, sung for real and
not a recorded version, called the faithful of the
remote village through which we had passed the previous
evening, to prayer. Feeling much better, I stood for
a while under the stars. The moon was so bright I
could see my own shadow as I walked back to my tent.
Down below, our horses were grazing, the foals sticking
close to their mothers, the stallion, the only one
to be tethered, occasionally throwing up his head
and issuing forth a challenge to any passing rivals.

We
made a curious caravan, deep in the Kopet Dag mountains
that form the buffer zone between Turkmenistan and Iran.
Six English ladies (as we were labelled), a wild Russian
guide (who must have been a horse in a previous life), an
even wilder Turkmen guide who appeared suddenly through
the haze one morning, five Akhal-Teke mares, two foals,
one yearling and a couple of stallions.

O'Farril Upsets Ragan Roberts In $50,000 Rocky Mountain
Grand Prix

Not only was the prize money on the line in the $50,000
Rocky Mountain Grand Prix, July 12 of the Colorado Summer
Circuit, but Ragan Roberts (AR) had the chance to win an
additional $25,000. As an added bonus to grand prix riders,
Helen Krieble of High Prairie Farms offered $25,000 to any
rider who could win two of the three Colorado Summer Circuit
grand prix events, and $100,000 if a rider won all three
events.
As the winner of the first grand prix, Roberts had his eye
on the rider prize. When he jumped clear in this second
grand prix, the $25,000 was in reach. Thirty-five horses
contested Guillherme Noguiera Jorge’s (BRA) challenging

horses during the week, so the course was not too difficult,”
explained Jorge of his track that took riders all around
the large derby field. “The time allowed played an
important part today,” he added. And in fact, the time
allowed was an integral part of the course with six horses
jumping clean, but accruing time faults. “Every ribbon
winner except the fastest four faulter was clean,”
commented jumper judge Walt Malkiewicz. “You don’t
see those kind of results very often.”

Lt. Shane Carey was this evening (Sunday) presented with
the <Leading International Rider> Award at the four-star
Falsterbo Horse Show in Sweden. Carey
won the prestigious Falsterbo Derby (Saturday), the Two-Phase
Stora Grabbars Prize (Friday), and was second in the Derby
Qualifier (Thursday), riding the Irish-bred <Killossery>
in all events.

American Paint Horse: A Photographic Portrayal and
Paint Horse Journal earn top publication awards
|

WORTH----The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) received
prestigious awards recently from American Horse Publications
(AHP) for its monthly magazine, Paint Horse Journal, and
its colorful, new coffee-table book The American Paint Horse:
A Photographic Portrayal. The publications were awarded
top honors at a special AHP conference held in Park City,
Utah, recently to recognize outstanding work in the equine
press.
The
American Paint Horse: A Photographic Portrayal, which was
released in fall 2001, combines insightful text about the
past, present and future of the American Paint Horse with
hundreds of magnificent large-format, full-color images.
AHP
judges said the new book "is a fine tribute to the
horse in general and the Paint Horse in particular."
Photographers of the award-winning book were Paint Horse
Journal editor Darrell Dodds and noted Western photographer
David Stoecklein. Text was written by Jennifer Forsberg-Meyer.
Shawn Phillips was the book designer, while Ron Bonge provided
illustration.

Army rider Lt. Shane Carey continued his almost unblemished
2002 run of success on the Irish-bred <Killossery>
at the major H&M Derby in Falsterbo, Sweden today (Saturday).
Taking
First Place with the only clear round of the competition,
the young Army rider also picked up a substantial 11,900
Euro in Prize Money.
The
Falsterbo Derby win now automatically qualifies Carey for
both the Hickstead Derby and the Hamburg Derby, later this
year.
