Orphan Foal Survives Against All the Odds
Faith a miniature Shetland pony orphan foal has survived despite her vet giving her only a slim chance to do so.
Tango, Faith's mum came to Penny Farm, the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Centre, near Blackpool, on 19th April in a small wild group of mini Shetlands that had been signed over after the sad demise of their elderly owner.

Faith was born on the 18th June but unhappily Tango was so poorly after the birth that she had to be euthanased.
Comments Tony Fleming, ILPH Centre Manager, "It really has been touch and go for the first few weeks and we thought we were going to lose her. We had no hoice but to hand rear her ourselves. I borrowed an infra red lamp that a neighbouring farmer used for his lambs, and she spent the first week or so under that with the farm staff taking it in turns to bottle feed her around the clock. They have been marvellous !
"We are all thrilled that she is now out of the woods and is turning out to be an inquisitive bold little foal."

Equine Laminitis Research and Therapy Detailed In New Book by Leading Scientist
GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, USA-"Difficult, but not impossible" are the words that leading researcher Christopher Pollitt BVSc PhD uses to describe his mission to solve the mystery of how the disease of lamintiis affects horses. Pollitt has compiled the latest information on the disease in its many forms, from grass founder in ponies to full-blown systemic laminitis as an adverse toxic reaction to medication.

"Equine Laminitis", a book first published in Australia, is now available worldwide through Hoofcare Publishing, publishers of the Hoofcare and Lameness Journal, and the web site www.hoofcare.com. Funding for the volume was made possible by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) in Australia, which has been a key funding resource for many of Pollitt's research projects in his Australian Equine Laminitis Research Unit at the University of Queensland. Hoofcare Publishing worked with RIRDC to make the book available in North America and to customers in other parts of the world.
In compiling the book, Pollitt created a well-rounded and objective overview of the disease, including coverage of many theories of laminitis that may be considered contradictory to his own research.
The book's eleven chapters include an in-depth look at the causes of laminitis and the process by which the disease initiates a painful structural breakdown of the horse's foot. Endocrine factors in laminitis, including the role of glucose and the links between chronic laminitis and the condition known as "Cushing's disease" in older horses, are covered. In the practical section of the book, Pollitt looks critically at how better radiographs may facilitate laminitis therapy, and discusses different courses of medication, and early intervention therapies such as intensive icing.
Therapeutic shoeing is a key chapter in the book, including important points in the use classic heart bar shoes, the modular EDSS laminitis shoeing system, and a hybrid shoe used in Australia that incorporates a heart-bar shoe with a trimmable "silicone rubber support cast" of the bottom of the foot.
"Equine Laminitis" is an in-depth but concise and objective overview of what is currently known about laminitis, and will serve as a catalyst for helping funding organizations or concerned individuals realize all that is not known about laminitis, as well as fully explaining what is known. Owners of horses, ponies, and donkeys afflicted with laminitis will find it comforting to know that researchers of Pollitt's caliber are at work on this crippling disorder affecting thousands of horses each year.

Mitsubishi To Sponsor Grand Prix
The winner of this year's Eventing Grand Prix at the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse Show will earn an all-terrain car worth £13,500.
The competition, to be held on Friday July 26 and worth a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin to the winner, is unique to Hickstead and will bear the sponsor's prefix - the Mitsubishi Eventing Grand Prix. It is run over a course combining showjumping and cross country obstacles and has developed into a "needle match" between riders from showjumping and eventing.
This year it will be particularly exciting, as local rider Pippa Funnell - twice European eventing champion and this year's Badminton Horse Trials winner - goes for her fourth win. And she will almost certainly be pressed hard by showjumping star Michael Whitaker, who has twice been narrowly beaten into second place.

Vermont Summer Festival Attracts Show Jumping’s Top Athletes
East Dorset, VT—July 2, 2002—Show Jumping’s biggest names will be on hand to contest the 2002 Vermont Summer Festival, taking place July 10 - August 11 at Harold Beebe Farm, in East Dorset, VT.
Among the international riders in attendance will be Canadian Show Jumping Team rider and Olympic veteran Mario Deslauriers, who placed third in the $35,000 Mad River Grand Prix at the Vermont Summer Festival last year and will be looking to improve on his placing this time around.
Although just 37 years old, the Canadian rider first made his mark on the international scene in 1984 when he won the World Cup Final at the age of 19, becoming the youngest rider to ever claim the title. That same year, Deslauriers, a two-time Canadian Show Jumping champion, was involved in a jump-off for the individual bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics. Deslauriers also competed at the 1988 Olympic Games, where the Canadian team placed fourth, and the 1990 World Equestrian Games. Hot off his win in the $60,000 World Cup Qualifier in his hometown of Bromont, Quebec, as well as a victory in the $77,700 Grand Prix of Gulfport in Mississippi earlier this year riding Everest, Deslauriers is prime for another win in Vermont.

It's all about winning medals….

The exciting new World Class Start and Potential Programme will focus on supporting and nurturing outstanding riding talent in young people across the Olympic equestrian sports in the UK and improve Great Britain's future success on the world stage. The first group of hugely talented riders (40 aged between 10 and 32) have now formally accepted World Class Start and Potential Manager Victoria Kind's invitation to come on to the programmes for this intensive development year.
The British Equestrian Federation's ambitious 10 year plan was granted Lottery funding by Sport England earlier this year and is still under development by governing bodies, riders, trainers and managers. So, how does it work? The long-term plan is to provide each rider with an entire 'toolkit' of skills, experiences, knowledge and information to equip them to win at senior and international level. Sports scientists, psychologists, nutritionists and fitness experts as well as the world's best riding trainers will help the selected riders to reach their optimum performance. That means having communication skills, being a good ambassador for the sport and being a well rounded person as well as a top athlete.

Industry Produces "Passports For Horses" Scheme for DEFRA On Time
The British Equestrian Federation on behalf of the horse industry has provided for government a detailed plan for passports for all UK horses and ponies - and a disease surveillance scheme. The Federation promised the Minister for Rural Affairs, the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP to provide its own recommendations for this major project by the end of June.

"We have fulfilled our obligation as promised and on time," said BEF Chief Executive Andrew Finding, paying tribute to the work of its Implementation Planning Team.
The plan provides for passports to be issued by government approved Passport Issuing organisations. These include breed societies, sports organisations and others already involved in registration and passport issuing for horses and ponies.
BEF is asking government to fund all costs for the first two years - and to pay indefinitely for the new Central Disease Surveillance Register which would accompany the passport scheme.

Knowing Your Horse's Feet-- Inside and Out
As I reflect back on the years that I have spent learning and teaching, I admit that in the beginning, it would have been very easy to be mislead. hether we are willing to admit it or not, we are virtually at the mercy of those "first impressions". In some respects, I have been lucky because my first teachers, and my current mentors, made sure that I approached my work with pride and diligence. I was often told, as we all are, that we should never dismiss the obvious and that many complex problems can be solved with the most basic approaches.
When you examine and begin to learn about your horse's feet, I urge you to follow the same advice. In this article, I share these pages with my colleague, Clyde Alloway DVM, so that we might enhance your understanding of the external characteristics and the inner mechanism of a horse's hoof.

Mark Leone Wins $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover To Close 33rd Annual Lake Placid Horse Show
Lake Placid, NY – June 30, 2002 –Mark Leone of Oakland, NJ won the $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy to close the 33rd annual Lake Placid Horse Show.
None of the first 20 entries was able to master the 16-jump course at the North Elba Showgrounds until David Raposa of Clinton, NY rode fault-free on Master Man. Ultimately, five of the 38 entries did ride fault-free to qualify for the 9-jump tiebreaker course where faults were converted to penalty seconds.
After Raposa, who won the class in 1990 on Shady Lady, received a score of 56.769 seconds, defending champion Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL returned on Hidden Creek’s Jones. Engle turned in what would be the tiebreaker’s fastest time, 41.411 seconds, but a rail down at fence 7 added four penalty seconds for a final score of 45.411.
The penalty proved costly when Leone mastered the course without penalty in 41.461 seconds on Pinkata de Longpre. His penalty-free ride held up for the win with Engle, the number-two ranked rider on the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Rider List, placing second. Danielle Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL finished third with a score of 55.317 on Lancier 4 while Raposa finished fourth.

Purpose in creating the breed; The acceptable blend is that of the saddlebred with the Clydesdale, Shire, Percheron, Belgian or Friesian; The percentage of saddlebred can be up to 75% but never less than 25%;In every case, the purpose of blending of the saddlebred with the draft or Friesian is to produce offspring that are the perfect blend, having the best of both "worlds" and being even better than either parent. Such is the magnificent Georgian Grande.
The Georgian Grande horse has the elegance and noble bearing of the saddlebred perfectly blended with the size, good bone and calm disposition of the draft or Friesian. It carries itself with an attitude that eludes description; some call it "presence, class, style, but this superior air distinguishes every ovement of the Georgian Grande. A Horse of Course
A Horse of Course
by Don Blazer
What is isn't necessarily what was. And what was could still be what is, only with a different name.
I said the Lone Ranger, Napoleon, El Cid and Gen. Zachary Taylor all rode albinos. They, of course, did not. And I said albinos are not weak, do not die young and do not have poor eyesight. They, of course, don't because they are not. Albinos are not any of those things because they are not-albinos, that is
Wendy Bockman took exception to most of what I said, and rightly so. Wendy is the co-founder of the Cremello & Perlino Education Association (CPEA). She set me straight, explaining that albinos have never been documented to exist in the equine species, and that what we once called albinos were actually Cremellos and Perlinos, also known as Double Dilutes. Wendy explains that Double Dilutes have coat colors ranging from pale ivory to light gold, have pumpkin/salmon colored skin and blue eyes. Any white markings will have pink skin just like any other horse, she said. Cremellos have white manes and tails, and Perlinos have golden-hued mane, tail and points. Both can have white markings, dappling and shadowing. According to Wendy, Cremellos and Perlinos appear in every breed of horse in which single dilute colors, such as buckskins, palominos and smoky blacks occur naturally. When you breed single dilute horses together, you have a 25 per cent chance of getting a double dilute foal.
