Samsung
Super League News : Irish Aces Do It Again!
The
Mercedes Benz Prize/Nations Cup at Aachen, part
of the Samsung Super League
The
Irish put in another stunning performance to record
their second Samsung Super League victory and their
third Nations Cup win in a row when topping the
line-up at Aachen today.
In
a thrilling clash in which the result was only decided
by the final rider into the ring the boys in green
held firm to pip a much-improved Belgian squad for
the honours, while the league leaders from France
had to settle for fifth spot this time.
The
tension ahead of this leg of the series was already
at a high pitch following the decision taken by
the Aachen organisers to restrict the number of
teams through to the second round to just eight.
|
With
the USA using a wild-card, and therefore battling for points
towards the normal Nations Cup series, it was possible that
one of the Super League teams could lose out and this was
exactly what happened when the Swedes concluded Round 1
in ninth position and therefore had to settle for just 0.5
Super League points.
There
was a considerable amount of disagreement about this issue
which must now be resolved ahead of next years series,
but for the eight teams through to Round 2 it was still
all to play for.

As
Cold as Ice
Research
now shows that the application of ice-cold therapy in
the first 24 hours has a marked effect on the severity
of an injury. It has now been shown that the temperature
of the therapy must be as close to zero as possible,
and the area should not be treated for more 10 minutes
or until the skin goes numb. This constricts the flow
of blood to the area and reduces swelling and oedema
to the area.
Cold therapy has been used for many years for the prevention
of injury after heavy exercise. New research now shows
that cold is not good enough. For maximum affect, it
must be ice cold.
The Armadillo Hot/Cold Therapy System allows you to
apply hot or cold therapy anywhere on the rider or limbs
of the horse - all with one product.
The gel packs can be either heated or cooled to temperature.
When placed in the freezer, they do not do hard, but
will drop in temperature to the crucial zero degrees.

Ireland
Wins German Nations Cup
IN
SPECTACULAR FASHION, Ireland decisively won the Aachen
Nations Cup in Germany today (Friday).
With
Germany desperate to improve upon their Super League
position on the home turf of Aachen after a disappointing
result on June 1 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and France
determined to hold onto their top ranking, Ireland
came up against fierce competition today in the fourth
leg of the series.
After
the second riders had completed the second round,
only one point separated the top three teams - Ireland,
Germany and France, but by the time Billy Twomey had
completed his round on <Luidam>, Ireland's lead
had widened to five points clear of Germany, with
France seven points behind the leading nation. Germany
and France's campaign had collapsed by the end of
the competition, however, with Belgium leaping to
Second place and wild card team USA drawing level
with Germany.

US
Jumping Team Finishes 3rd In The Nation's Cup Competition
At Aachen
|
In
the midst of fierce competition, US competitors continued
to demonstrate their strength today at CHIO Aachen, Germany,
where the jumping team (Lauren Hough/Windy City, Chris Kappler/Royal
Kaliber, Laura Kraut/Anthem, and Peter Wylde/Fein Cera)
finished in third place tying with the host country. Ireland
won the competition and is now only half a point behind
France on the Samsung Super League Leaderboard. Ireland
also won the Nations Cup class at St. Gallen (SUI)
several weeks ago. Chris Kappler on Royal Kaliber, a brown
Dutch Warmblood stallion (Ramiro x Feidonja, by Voltaire)
secured the teams 3rd place finish with 2 clear rounds
in the famed arena known for its size, seating capacity
for 40,000 spectators and spectacular range of obstacles.
Kappler, who competed at Aachen in 1995 and Jos Lansink
(BEL) were the only two riders who achieved double clear
rounds. The show is bigger and better than ever and
is phenomenal commented Kappler. Weve been having
a great show and 3 out of the 4 team members are on the
Pan Am Team so its nice to be able to compete together
and get to know each other. The US was invited to
Aachen on a wildcard. Frank Chapot is serving as the Chef
dEquipe.

AHA
Registers 600,000th Purebred Arabian
The
Arabian Horse Association (AHA) of Aurora, Colo. celebrated
a milestone when it assigned purebred Arabian registration
number 600000 in May of this year. One of the oldest breed
registries in the United States, it registered the first
purebred Arabian in 1908. Registry number 600000 went to
Bambi Forsyth's 2002 filly, Lady Marina (Marine+/ x Fayek
Gai Lady). A small Michigan breeder, Forsyth calls Lady
Marina her "miracle foal."
Forsyth
carefully planned for her 2002 filly, researching the perfect
stallion to breed to her mare, Fayek Gai Lady. "I really
wanted a grey foal with a performance pedigree. My mare
was a grey and I was looking for a grey stallion with an
English or western background. When I attended the 2001
Scottsdale Arabian Show, I stopped at the Salem Children's
Home stallion auction. One of the stallions offered was
Marine+/. After looking at his performance record, I thought
he would be a good match for my mare," says Forsyth.
Forsyth
awaited Fayek Gai Lady's first foal; unfortunately problems
started shortly after her mare was checked in foal. The
mare soon developed gestational laminitis, a painful condition
that caused the structure of her hooves to deteriorate.
"We treated the mare to make her more comfortable but
as the pregnancy wore on we could see she was getting worse.
The laminitis also caused the foal to go into stasis, which
meant that the foal essentially stopped growing. Twelve
months into the pregnancy, the vet estimated she still had
two more weeks to go," says Forsyth.

Jumping - Friday Is Super League Day At Aachen
IRELAND
ONCE more goes into battle to ensure the country's
place in the Samsung Super League today (Friday June
20), competing against eight other teams in the Nations
Cup of Germany.
With the USA as a wild card entry, the Irish will
really have to be concerned with only the three other
teams fighting for supremacy at the top end of the
league - Germany, Gt. Britain, and current Super League
leaders France. Ireland currently lies in second place
after a spectacular victory at St. Gallen, Switzerland,
at the beginning of the month.
This is the halfway stage of the Super League, and
Aachen arguably its most prestigious venue, with a
budget of 8.5m Euro being poured into the show. Please

UK
Debut For "Clicker Training" Expert
Innovator
teaching a 'guide horse for the blind' will explain new
technique
Alexandra
Kurland, world leader in the development of "clicker
training" for horses and currently teaching a miniature
horse to replace a blind friend's guide dog, is to make
a flying visit to the UK in October to demonstrate her techniques
She
will hold one clinic at the Osbaldeston Equestrian Centre,
Lancashire, on October 21, and using "volunteer"
horses and ponies, demonstrate how the sounds from her clicker
device can be used in their training. And for those interested,
she will show photographs and talk about teaching the "guide
horse" to look after her owner.
Her
visit is being arranged by 31-year-old horse behavourist
Linda Pearson from Water Rossendale, Lancashire. "I
have been using the clicker technique to train my own horses
for about five years, and recently began giving demonstrations,"
she said.
"I
have been trying for some time to persuade Alex to come
over. October will be a flying visit, but I hope next year
she will visit the UK for longer and we can do a series
of clinics. I have already had inquiries from the south
east and south west."
During
her evening at Osbaldeston, Alex will also talk about training
the "guide horse", Panda. The miniature has already
mastered some aspects of training, can get in and out of
cars, negotiate obstacles in busy New York centre and navigate
around shops - and go to the toilet on cue!

Arabian
Wins 2002 Purina Mills Super Senior Horse Search
The
10-day-old Arabian colt that was Carla Connor's wedding
present is now her 35-year-old dearly beloved companion
and the winner of Equine Senior's 2002 Super Senior Horse
Search. Purina Mills chose Daurief (Daufin x Aarief) over
more than 2,000 horses nationwide based on Connor's essay
and a photo showing him in excellent body condition as he
cantered effortlessly across her pasture. Purina awarded
the pair 40 bags of Equine Senior, a $2,000 gift certificate
and is featuring them in an Equine Senior ad campaign.
Connor
was a 20-year-old bride when her husband generously offered
to buy her an Arabian horse with their wedding money. When
Connor saw the little *Raffles-bred colt at the Mekeel Ranch,
a renowned breeder of fine Arabian horses, "He grabbed
my heart," says Connor. "He was a little imp and
just kept nibbling at my shirt, and he had these big doe-like
brown eyes that were so caring."

HorseWorld
banks on success with Barclays!
Local staff from Barclays Bank braved a cold, wet
Saturday morning in May to redecorate several stables
for the horses, ponies and donkeys at HorseWorld,
in Bristol. The Welfare Department at HorseWorld (a
registered charity) takes in many sick, injured and
neglected horses, all of whom need a safe, secure
environment to recover in. The stables in the Welfare
Department get used extensively, and they need regular
cleaning and re-decorating to prevent the spread of
disease. |
Simon
Gould, Barclays Local Business Manager, was touched by
the sad stories of some of the horses, ponies and donkeys
when he visited HorseWorld, and so he offered to help.
Sixteen Barclays volunteers braved the weather to spend
hours cleaning, scraping, sweeping and painting 15 stables
in the Welfare Department. Simon Gould said: " We
all had a really enjoyable day supporting HorseWorld,
everyone just got stuck in and worked really hard to achieve
as much as possible in one day. This is a great example
of Barclays staff working closely with the local community
to achieve something which we hope will make a real and
lasting difference".

Half-Arabian
Earns U.S. Dressage Federation Gold Medal
Heather
Oleson and her Half-Arabian dressage horse, SB Flame Dancer
(Ralmas Roper x Hey Dance Alittle), captured one of the
sport's highest accolades--a United States Dressage Federation
(USDF) Gold Medal. Dancer was also the only Half-Arabian
to earn a USDF All-Breeds award at the Grand Prix Level
in 2002. To earn the Gold Medal, Heather and Dancer needed
four scores of 60 percent or higher, two from Intermediate
1 or II and two at Grand Prix. Six other Arabians and Half-Arabians
listed below earned USDF Silver and Bronze Medals.
Dancer
was Oleson's first horse, a brash Arabian/Appaloosa yearling
that was a good mover, spirited and spunky. Oleson's mother
broke Dancer, and Oleson did all his early training with
help from a local dressage trainer and a dressage-oriented
4-H club. She took Dancer to his first USDF-recognized show
at First Level when he was 5 years old and she was 13. By
then the two had started working as a team.
"I
could always get him to do something pretty easily,"
says Oleson, who lives in Sherwood, Ore. "He was always
very willing to work for me."

The
Original Horse Safari
Imagine
this: You are sitting astride a horse as he stands face
to face with a buffalo and curiously sniffs the buffalo's
nose. Just half an hour later you are standing, relaxed,
close to two rhinos, photographing them from the saddle
as they seek shade from the midday sun. This same horse
will then carry you, unflinchingly, within meters of hippo
as they splash in the waters of a dam, along paths bordered
on both sides with abundance of game, and through thick
bush, tracking leopard. He will canter with you alongside
a herd of zebra, wildebeest or giraffe that appear suddenly
at your side. He will stand stock still before an elephant
and wait patiently for your signal to retreat.
You
find these horses in South Africa, close to the Kruger National
Park. There, you can go on a Horse Safari, sleeping in luxurious
Safari tents, built in the colonial style on platforms facing
a big river. On this mobile safari you ride over a 40000
acre private game reserve staying in different camps. Close
encounters with elephant, cheetah, rhino, wild dog, buffalo,
leopard, accompanied by a professional guide, are the thrill
of this adventure. In small groups of four experienced riders,
Wait A Little African Big Five Horse Safaris gives you the
experience of a lifetime.

Future
Stars Get Their Chance To Savour Hickstead Derby Thrills
New
Pony Masters is Europe's richest prize for juniors
The
best riders in the world and the youngsters with ambitions
to take their place. It's all there as part of the entertainment
at this year British Jumping Derby Meeting (August 14-17)
- in the established and acclaimed British Jumping Derby
itself and the launch of the unique Hickstead Pony Masters.
Many
of the best riders in the world have already won the Derby,
and a lot more still have it in their sights. It takes a
great rider and a brave and powerful horse to negotiate
the 1,195-metre course and obstacles like the three-element
Devil's Dyke and the almost perpendicular slope of the 10ft
6ins Derby Bank.
But
this year attention will be split between this class and
the Hickstead Pony Masters, a new competition offering junior
riders and their ponies their chance to compete in the famous
International Arena. The £2,500 first prize is a little
short of the Derby's £20,000, but it's still Europe's
richest pot for their up-to-16 age group.
"It's
a really amazing opportunity for these young people to experience
the occasion and savour the atmosphere in the International
Arena," said Hickstead owner Douglas Bunn. "Most
of them will have the British Jumping Derby as an ambition
and some of them will make it."

Silver Medalist Gives Texas Young Riders the Rides of
Their Lives
Midlothian,
TX, June 12, 2003 Texas has been home to World
Champion Quarter Horses, reiners and cutters for decades,
but the Olympic sport of dressage is still in the growth
stage in the Lone Star State. Yet, Myrna Krohn has been
working to improve the availability of quality dressage
instruction by bringing top clinicians from around the
world to her High Ridge Farm (30 miles south of Dallas.)
The efforts have been appreciated; riders have been
driving more than 1000 miles roundtrip to work with
Pan-American Games Silver Medalist and USDF Gold Medalist
Dr. Cesar Parra, who teaches as many as four clinics
per year at High Ridge. |
Cesars
very tough; he expects you to ride like youre going
to the Olympics, said Krohn. But hes very
enthusiastic and he loves the sport so much. Everyone just
loves riding with him. To help the regions younger
dressage enthusiasts, Krohn recently organized a special
clinic just for them. Krohn explained, We wanted to
expose our young riders to someone with Cesars credentials
and drive. Cesar graciously donated his time and we had
a wonderful response.

The
2nd International Conference on the Transportation of Competition
Horses is to be held at Hartpury College Gloucestershire
during the weekend of 12th - 13th July 2003.
Mary Gordon-Watson
When I was competing in horse trials, travelling horses
around the world was a relatively rare occurrence. Now,
not so many years on, thousands of horses clock up many
thousands of miles annually, whether on the international
competition circuits, transporting to studs or race meetings
worldwide, or just attending local shows.
Both horse owners and professional transporters need to
be aware not only of the best and safest ways to travel
horses, but the increasingly complex network of legislation
and regulations imposed by the European Union.
For this reason anyone who transports horses - their own
or other peoples' - is strongly advised to attend the Conference
this July.
Whether carrying a single horse by road to a local show,
shipping a load of breeding stock across the water, or flying
a team of fit horses to an international event, it is vital
to know how to minimise the risks and avoid any unnecessary
stress. The welfare and performance of those horses depends
upon it.
This Conference has been arranged by the Fédération
Equestre Internationale (FEI), the International League
for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) and the Massachusetts
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA),
because they believe it has now become essential to bring
together all those involved in moving horses by road, sea
or air.
World authorities who will present the key issues include,
Professor Catherine Kohn and Professor Fred Derkson from
the USA, Dr Des Leadon (President of the World Equine Veterinary
Association), Peter Kettlewell from the Silsoe Research
Institute, Eddie Harper from the Animal Road Hauliers Association
and Emma Stamper, President of the Animal Transport Association
(AATA). Horse transporters and flying grooms will also speak
and important rules will be explained by regulators, while
the most important veterinary and welfare aspects will be
covered by leading experts in these fields.
"The conference will review transport risk factors
and existing guidelines," says Alex Atock, ILPH Consultant
and Conference Secretary. "We want to capture the views
of the industry on aspects of managing horses during movement,
and assess the safety and design of horse transport by road,
sea and air"

Baileys
Fine Tunes!
Baileys
Horse Feeds are to sponsor the British Dressage Novice Freestyle
Championship having signed a deal taking them to 2006. Baileys
are no strangers to the sport of dressage, being involved
with reigning National Champion, Nicky Barrett, and rising
star, Gareth Hughes, and having previously supported individual
classes at both affiliated and unaffiliated competitions
and throughout the grades. Quite surprising then that the
Novice Freestyle will be their first commitment to an affiliated
series. "We've really enjoyed following our riders'
successes over the past few months and after a super evening
at the Winter Championships, I felt it was about time we
got more involved with the sport," says Marketing Manager,
Jane Buchan.
Novice
freestyle to music was originally the brainchild of Jenny
Loriston-Clarke, whose Catherston Stud first hosted and
sponsored the series, and was responsible for encouraging
numerous novice riders to take part. Its popularity has
grown enormously over recent years, with the number of qualifying
competitions growing from 12 to around 30 throughout the
country from May to December. The top three riders from
each qualifier are eligible to compete at one of four Regional
Semi finals, with the prize winners there competing in the
final at the Winter Championships, at Solihull.
From
the top of the company down, Baileys are very much hands-on
horse people with a passion for what they do and a very
real understanding of the demands of the different disciplines,
including dressage.

Brindle
Horses
The Brindle pattern consists of a watery or drippy looking
striping (sometimes just partial striping) over the
body of an animal. It is more commonly seen in dogs
or cattle. In horses, the pattern is extremely rare.
Brindle has occurred in such diverse breeds as Arabians,
Thoroughbreds, Mustangs, Quarter Horses, Tennessee Walking
Horses, German and Bavarian Warmbloods, Russian Horses,
Spanish Horses, and also in Donkeys and Mules. Many
people confuse the Brindle pattern with Dun Factor markings
(stripe down the back, barring on the legs, and occasional
regular-spaced striping down the ribs). At one time,
it was thought Brindle was a just a variation of Dun
Factor. However, many brindles do not have any Dun Factor
markings whatsoever, indicating the two patterns are
probably distinct genetically

Romp Home In Finnish Nations Cup
IRELAND
HAS NOW won two Nations Cups back-to-back, with victory
in the Finnish Nations Cup today (Sunday) following
the Super League win at St. Gallen on June 1. Though
starting as favourites after two days of competition
at the Nations Cup venue of Hamina, Finland, the Irish
squad had everything to prove upon their arrival last
Thursday.
With squad member Conor Swail out of action due to
a serious cholic problem with his horse, and individual
rider Cian O'Connor drafted in as last-minute team
replacement on a horse untried at Nations Cup level,
the team had the added unknown quantity of Clones-born
rider Clem McMahon making his Nations Cup debut.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - O'Brien Takes
Double Clear Win At Galway
WITH
A tricky course designed by Brendan Duffy at the Galway
County Show testing many riders to the limit, there
were only five horses through to the Grand Prix jump-off
today (Sunday) in the Galway sunshine, and only one
double clear round at the finish.
A win by Lt. David O'Brien on the Minister for Defence's
<Carraig Dubh> brought the Army Rider into the
Top Six in the Kerrygold League rankings for the first
time. He said: <<I am delighted with the double
clear. I thought the ground was slightly holding,
and so I was under some pressure, finding it hard
to jump, but in the end he delivered the goods. I'm
also delighted to be in the Top Six of the rankings,
and I thought the atmosphere here today was tremendous.>>
Many riders fell foul of the related distance at fence
7 and 8, and the long combination coming up to the
finish posed a problem of stamina for tiring horses
and riders. Please
