SELECTION TRIAL
Japan, Korea and New Zealand qualify a team for the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens
No less than 36.500 spectators attended the Olympic selection trial
which took place last Sunday in Aachen (GER).
Thirty-eight jumping riders from South Africa, Morocco, Jordan,
Egypt, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Korea, Malaysia, the Kingdom
Saudi Arabia, Iran and Lebanon fought for the coveted starting places
for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Three teams and five individual
riders could qualify.
The qualified teams for the 2004 Olympic Games are Japan, Korea,
which is coached by the three-fold European Champion Paul Schockemöhle,
and New Zealand. The Japanese Team, composed of Taizo Sugitani,/Lamalushi,
Toshiki Masui/Ernest, Mariko Kato/Sportnant and Tadayoshi Hayashi/Swanky
finished the team competition with a total score of 5 penalty points,
followed by Korea with 8 pts and New Zealand with 12 pts.
The individual riders who earned their tickets for Athens are: André
Sakakini (46), the Egyptian rider living in Germany and who took
part in several championships, Ibrahim Bisharat (19) from Jordan,
who, among others won the Grand Prix in Dubai last year, James Paterson-Robinson
(24) from Australia, who is living in the Netherlands at the moment,
and Khaled Al Eid (34), Bronze Medal Winner at the Olympic Games
2000 in Sydney, as well as Ramsy al Duhamy, both from Saudi Arabia.
Five riders jumped clear the 2 rounds competition: Jung Ho Woo (KOR)
on Santos 35, Jung Hyun Joo (KOR) on Padarco, André Sakakini
(EGY) on I Cavalli Del Sole Casper and Tadayoshi Hayashi (JPN) on
Swanky. Mariko Kato (JPN) on Sportnant had 1 pt penalty for exceeding
the time allowed.
The first course built by Christa Jung was extremely inviting with
lot of questions to be answered. The second course was more difficult
with raised fences and quite demanding. The level of participation
was impressive. The FEI was represented by Dr Douk-Kee Ahn (KOR)
President of Geographical Group VIII and FEI Bureau Member.
It was the first time that an equestrian event was organised specifically
for Olympic qualification purposes instead of being integrated in
a CSIO. Aachen was a very fitting venue and all participants and
National Federations representatives were extremely pleased and
praised the excellent organisation of the event. The fact that the
Olympic Selection Competition was held on the most famous equestrian
venue of the world gave it without doubt additional status.
Three European teams will be able to qualify for the 2004 Olympic
Games at the 2003 European Jumping Championship to be held in Donauseschingen
(GER) from 20 to 24 August. Three teams and 5 individual from the
American continent and Caribbean islands will be qualified at the
2003 Pan American Games to be held from 7 to 16 August 2003 in Santo
Domingo (DOM).
