Movement Announcement is a "Hollow Offer" if Farmers
Have To Pay
The announcement last week that animals caught up
in foot and mouth infected areas can be moved to abattoirs outside these areas
will be a hollow offer if farmers are having to pay prohibitively heavy costs,
says the NFU.
DEFRA has ordered that every animal moved under these circumstances must be
inspected by a private veterinary surgeon at the producer's expense.

On Safe Ground
By Permission of Karen
Boush
Western Horseman, September 1998
Using his seven-step safety system,
horseman and clinician Frank Bell of Larkspur, Colorado, teaches riders that a
gentle touch and reassuring voice can work wonders with all horses. The first
three steps of his system--bonding, take and give, and intimacy -- were
reviewed in the September 1998 issue. They guide riders through the initial
stages of building a friendship with a horse. Steps 4 and 5, discussed this
month, focus on ground exercises that ease horse and rider into a deeper level
ofcommunication. |
Once you have gained your horse's trust, Bell
suggest you treat your horse as you would any other good friend by finding out
what motivates him. Does he seem to feel the world is an okay place or is he
impulsive, certain that danger lurks around every corner? Whether it's a raised
hand, a loud truck, or a plastic bag blowing in the breeze. Bell suggests that
you discover what specifically frightens your horse before you get on his back.
I like to think of every horse as a puzzle with at least one problem -- perhaps
many more -- and I help him through it, Bell says. But I try to find these
problems before they find me out on the lone prairie, and I'vegot a long walk
home, or worse.
Everything the horse is asked to do in these next steps builds on the bond
you've already created. With Bell's method, if you remain sensitive to your
horse's emotions and continually offer reassurance, you can create a confident,
trusting partner

Brazil - Pantanal Wildlife Trail Trip
Reports
The base for the South American Wildlife Trail
& Safari is the Baia dos Pedros Ranch. The Refúgio Ecológico
"ecologic refuge" is located approximately 140 miles from Campo
Grande in a 130,000 acres farm, of which 17,000 constitute an isolated reserve
with very rich flora and fauna. It has a diverse landscape of savanna lowlands,
seasonal wetlands and rich forest areas. The Pedros Ranch is also an active
working ranch with over 5.000 cattle. |
|
The Pantanal, known as the world biggest
ecological sanctuary and largest wetland area, covers some 240,000 sq.kms of
the upper Paraguay river basin. About 2/3 of it belong to the Brazilian states
of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, extending to the west into Bolivia and
southwest to Paraguay. During 6 days (5 full & 2 half days) the group will
be riding on the vast lands while the omnipresent wildlife catches the
attentions and provokes breathtaking surprises during the whole trail. It is
imperative, though, to keep cameras ready at all times. The trail includes boat
cruises on the Aquidauana river, an affluent to the Rio Paraguay, to watch the
river animals and on a night excursion we show you how to caress a Cayman's
neck.

Shiatsu for Horses - The Stomach
Meridian
The last few articles have been looked
at the various Meridians (channels through which the essential life force, or
energy flows) and how the Japanese healing system called Shiatsu can help your
horse. The associations between the meridians and the part of the body that
they help balance can often be confusing for the layman. For example the Kidney
Meridian which can help circulation. This meridian it all becomes very easy to
understand as we focus on the stomach meridian. |
The physical associations relating to the horses
stomach meridian are fairly obvious: colic, digestive disorders, flatulence,
overeating or poor appetite, bad breath and sinus congestion. It involves the
transformation and distribution of food.
Many of the meridians are associated with the elements of fire, water, wood,
metal and earth. The stomach meridian is associated with the earth element type
of horse. these horses need stability, routine and exercise in life. Suspect an
imbalance in the energy in this meridian if your horse thinks of food a lot!
This is the horse that at mealtimes is really put out if he isnt the first one
to be fed - and always eats ravenously and then go looking for more in his
pasture mates manager if possible. He will often insist on treats and become
nippy. This horse may take advantage of less experienced riders and often may
become cranky simply because he really does need movement to stimulate his
metabolism and circulation. It also helps with the mental energy as work
provides him with stimulation that prevents stagnation and depression. This
really is the kind of horse that will plod around a riding school wearily with
beginners and then, when ridden by someone with experience who does perhaps
some jumping or lateral work, becomes a totally different horse.
The opposite imbalance can occur. When there is to little energy or stagnant
energy in this meridian the horse is underweight and a worrier. He doesnt seem
to make the best use of his feed and performs poorly when under pressure, for
example at a competition. This horse needs regular exercise to get rid of
excess nervous energy and, by keeping him relaxed, you will assist his
digestion and maintain weight.

It's New. It's Here. It's Different
It's What Your Horse Has Been Waiting For
Help For Horse Riders
Ruth Mazet, equine "problem-solver" and trainer, has turned her
attention to the Internet to help all horses get the chance in life that they
deserve.
Written in a clear, upbeat and informative style,
Ruth's is a very horse-centred method. She believes it's essential to
understand WHY a horse behaves in the way it does, rather than simply trying -
and usually failing - to impose a new mode of behaviour. Her methods demand
that the trainer learns to think like a horse, and Ruth makes no secret of the
fact that improvement involves dedication and effort to overcome the old,
familiar way of working and to try something entirely new.
