Jumping - Shaky Start For Ireland In Nations Cup Super
League
IRELAND
got off to a shaky start in the Nations Cup Super
League with a joint sixth place at La Baule, France
today (Friday).
The
Irish team, under Chef d'Equipe Tommy Wade, will be
hoping to improve its performance substantially when
it moves to Rome on May 28, if it is to maintain its
top three placing in the overall league table. With
the Olympics looming, it will be essential for Ireland
to rack up significant points before six of its main
riders decamp to Athens.
Upset
of the day was the 37 total faults recorded by veteran
Irish rider Peter Charles with <Pershing>, and
with only one team clear round from Kevin Babington
on <Carling King> there was not enough good
news on the scoreboard to allow Ireland to recover
lost ground.
Germany
won the Super League at La Baule, with France second,
and Belgium third. Please

Jumping - O'Connor Kicks Off La Baule With A Win
ON
the eve of the vital Samsung Super League Nations
Cup at La Baule, France, team member Cian O'Connor
raised morale for the Irish with a definitive win
the opening speed class today (Thursday) on his 10
yr-old bay mare <ABC Landliebe>, finishing almost
two seconds ahead of French star Michel Hecart and
<That's Life>.
La Baule is the first of eight Super League venues
for 2004, and will be a nerve-wracking trial for O'Connor
and his team-mates, as Ireland has not won at La Baule
since 1994. But if Ireland is to remain in the premier
league of world show jumping, a high placing at the
French venue will be a valuable opener for the hectic
season ahead. Please

Super League 2004 : Can The French Do It Again?.......
In
two days time La Baule plays host to the first leg
of the 2004 Samsung Super League and, in this Olympic
year, the new series promises to provide some early
pointers on the road to Athens.
In
the inaugural 2003 season the Samsung Super League
brought the sport of Nations Cup jumping to a whole
new level. Here only the best compete against the
best and it was tough battle to maintain a good position
amongst the top eight show jumping nations in the
world.
The
Swedes suffered bitter disappointment when, despite
a gallant struggle, they finished last and were relegated
to normal Nations Cup competition while the inclusion
of the United States of America, who gained promotion
in their place, adds a whole new dimension to the
Super League this time around.

Office Opens for Burghley
The Box Office opens on 6th May for the sporting and social
highlight of the autumn calendar, the Burghley Horse Trials
2004 (2nd-5th September) held at Stamford in Lincolnshire
(UK).
This, the 44th Burghley Horse Trials, will follow hard on
the heels of the Athens Olympics and provide the first opportunity
to see the newly crowned Olympic medal winners in action.
The Olympic theme is closely linked with Burghley as the
Horse Trials was founded by the Marquess of Exeter, who
himself won Olympic gold in the hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam
Olympics and was immortalised in the film Chariots of Fire.

Chris
Kappler and Royal Kaliber Named to Olympic Show Jumping
Team Short List
The
Committee on Selections of the United States Equestrian
Federation, Inc., has approved the unanimous recommendation
of the Show Jumping Selectors, and of the Show Jumping High
Performance Committee, to name Chris Kappler to the Short
List for the 2004 Olympic Equestrian Team.
According
to the USEF Show Jumping Athlete Selection Procedures, it
is possible for one or two horse/rider combinations to be
named to the Short List by the selectors without competing
in the Olympic Selection Trials.
The
Selectors must make this decision unanimously and must base
it on numerous factors, including but not limited to soundness
of the horse, previous international experience and success
of the horse/rider combination in international competition,
and prospect of the horse/rider combination to win an Olympic

Equine Display Arena At Royal Show
Horse
and pony enthusiasts can look forward to a jam-packed
program of stunning displays in a new arena dedicated
solely to equestrian demonstrations at this year's Royal
Show.
The
decision to convert the use of the ring, which was originally
built as a show jumping arena was made by organisers
after last year's show.
Equine
feature co-ordinator, Emma Dineley said: "The arena
was given over solely to displays for the show following
feedback from our visitors. Staging all our equine displays
in one area means it will be better for audiences and
we hope to catch the interest of non-riders."
Show jumping classes have now been moved to the larger
Equine Arena 1 situated north of the Grand Ring.
A
packed program of demonstrations in the Equine Display
arena covers all four days of the Royal Show starting
Sunday, 4th - 7th July.

Solo
Chills Out With TopSpec
PETER
Rawlinson was at a loss when his new horse Solo turned
into a nightmare purchase.
Solo,
a 16.1hh three-quarter thoroughbred, was bought by Peter
for his eldest daughter to ride, having outgrown her
pony.
However,
from the beginning it was clear that the progression
from pony to horse was not going to be plain sailing,
and Solo's behaviour left much to be desired.
After
more than a year of problems, including a disastrous
holiday in the New Forest where his behaviour was so
appalling and dangerous that Peter's daughter became
too frightened to ride him, the family were on the verge
of giving up.

Danger
hides in lush spring grass
Lush
spring grass is just around the corner, and your horse or
pony will be longing to get his teeth into it - but watch
out
As
hiding in those deep green blades of grass are carbohydrates,
or sugars, that will be particularly plentiful when grass
has been fertilised or is well-grown. And too much too quick
can lead to laminitis, one of the most worrying illnesses
about.
So
keep an eye open for any sign of lameness. In the early
stage of the disease this is often only identified when
the horse or pony is cantering, as the extra concussion
affects sensitive feet. Although laminitis usually affects
the front feet only, it can affect the back feet, or just
one foot, so remain vigilant throughout the spring and summer.
