Golden
Spur Award Honors Paint Horse Association Founder
Rebecca
Tyler Lockhart of Ryan, Okla., will receive the 26th
annual National Golden Spur Award for her visionary
work in establishing the American Paint Horse Association.
The award will be presented during a dinner, beginning
with a 6 p.m reception and silent auction, on Sept.
20, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Sixth
St. The Ranching Heritage Association hosts the event.
|
Entertainment
will be provided by recording artists Waddie Mitchell and
Don Edwards. The two have performed as "The Bard and
the Balladeer" on concert stages throughout the nation
and with such orchestras as the Lubbock and Fort Worth symphonies.
Lockhart was selected for the 2003 Golden Spur Award in
recognition of her work to create, maintain and promote
what was originally called the American Paint Stock Horse
Association. It was under her guidance that the organization
founders set the high breed standards for the Paint Horse.
"Looking back, what makes me happiest is seeing the
APHA grow, seeing good horses, and seeing children and whole
families enjoying them," Lockhart said. "I've
just loved seeing the pleasure horses give to people and
all the children who have gotten involved.
"The Paints were such underdogs," she added. "I
felt compelled to rescue them. It was as if I was driven
to do it. Once I got my friends involved by telling them
it would work, I had to see that it did. It was one of those
cases where 'He who rides the tiger cannot dismount.'"

Okla.
The 5-year-old American Paint Horse stallion and rider

Pony Classes at Dressage at Devon Prove Big Things Come
in Small Packages
The
classes will take place at the 29th annual Dressage at Devon,
September 23 through September 29
Devon,
PA (May 28, 2003)Dressage at Devon 2003 will
be one of the first large dressage competitions in the United
States to offer FEI, or international-level, competition
classes for ponies. The classes are open to junior riders
between the ages of 12 and 16. Dressage classes for ponies
have a strong tradition of popularity at European competitions
and have only recently begun to attract attention in North
America. The first FEI Pony Division Class in North America
was held at the FEI Dressage Championship of the Americas,
at Blainville, Quebec, in August 2002.
In
Europe, says Lendon Gray, who is well known for riding
14.3 hand Connemara/thoroughbred Seldom Seen to several
national championships, the ponies are humongous.
The classes are so important, she explains, because they
may encourage children to get into dressage, have fun with
it and become better riders, at a younger age. She points
out that the quality and numbers of riders has increased
tremendously since juniors have been encouraged to participate
in dressage. Pony classes will, she hopes, help younger
riders find their niche and give them an opportunity to
compete against their peers.

Major
animal welfare project gives new lease of life to
Afghans
A major new animal welfare project
launched by two British charities is transforming
the lives of hundreds of Afghan families and the working
horses and donkeys they depend on for survival.
Launched just two months ago, the jointly funded project
by the Brooke Hospital for Animals and the World Society
for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), provides free
veterinary care for working equines in the southern
Afghan city of Jalalabad, a training programme for
the city's farriers as well as education for owners
on basic equine care.
In addition, the project has just completed installing
freshly pumped drinking water and troughs, the first
in Jalalabad for working animals. Until now the nearest
water supply was over three miles away and horses
frequently died from heat stress as temperatures rose
to over 40*C. The new watering facilities, at three
carriage stands across the city, are proving to be
lifesavers for people too: they are being used by
the community, which itself has few fresh water facilities
in Jalalabad. |
The
project employs specially trained vets from the local Afghan
agency, Committee for Rehabilitation Aid to Afghanistan,
to provide treatment for sick and injured working animals
at five of the busiest horse and donkey carriage stands.
Many of the animals treated so far have been substantially
underweight, some in very poor condition. The reasons are
badly overgrown teeth and heavy worm infestations and these
problems are now the major priority for the veterinary work.
Horses are also suffering from overgrown feet, which can
cause severe lameness.
In Jalalabad, thousands of people work with horses and donkeys
and, in the vast majority of cases, entire families depend
on these animals for their livelihood. Both charities have
had past experience of working with Afghan people but this
is the first time both charities have been able to work
directly with returning refugees inside Afghanistan to help
rebuild their shattered lives.

The
Suffolk Punch
The Suffolk Horse is always chesnut in colour (note
the traditional spelling without the 't'), often accompanied
with a star on the forehead, or a thin reach, blaze
or shim down the face. No other colour is seen. There
are seven recognised shades of chesnut: dark approaching
brown-black, liver colour or mahogany chesnut, dull
dark chesnut, light mealy chesnut, red, golden, lemon,
bright chesnut. Although non standard, the preferred
heights are between 16.1hh and 16.2hh for a mare,
and 17hh to 17.1hh for a stallion. A mature horse
can weigh between three quarters and a full tonne.
|
The
Suffolk is shaped with great width in front and in the quarters.
Its short legs and resulting low draught give it a direct
pull on its vehicle. The impression is that the body is
too big for the legs, giving the breed the nickname 'Suffolk
Punch'.
The Suffolk shares a distinctness with the British Percheron
of being the only clean-legged draught horse. The breed
is famous for its docile disposition and young horses can
be quickly schooled to perform any work. Early maturity
means that many Suffolks are put to light work at two years
of age and go into full work at three, working well into
their mid-twenties. Easy keeping qualities are characteristic.
Considering the weight and work performed, food consumption
is small. The Suffolk can live on an allowance that would
have starved the enormous dray horses of Liverpool and London,
lasting for long hours without feeding as was practiced
on farms.

Authorse
reveal U.S. Remount Service had tremendous impact
on horse industry
Dedicated
horsemen lead the charge into military history with
'War Horse"
|
FORT
WORTH, Texas-Today's U.S. military pilots strike enemy targets
at supersonic speeds, while ground forces advance to the
battlefront in sophisticated tanks that can traverse practically
any type of terrain. In addition to their remarkable speed
and range capabilities, these stealthy fighters can often
complete their missions before they are ever detected by
the enemy. Bring the U.S. Navy into the theater, and the
military possesses a triple threat by air, land and sea
that provides tremendous advantages during times of war.
It
wasn't that long ago, however, that the horse supplied a
strategic advantage and played a major role in helping the
Untied States to defeat its enemies. From Revolutionary
War times right on past the Spanish-American war in 1898,
skilled horsemen were riding their strong mounts to victory,
as the United States made steady progression as a world
power.
After
the turn of the 20th century, a group of knowledgeable and
insightful individuals, determined to maintain and ultimately
enhance their country's military advantage, devised a program
to ensure that Americans would always have enough horses
ready for any fight at any time. Strength in numbers was
not their only concern. These military planners were also
committed to establishing a national stable of military
horses that were superior in intelligence, strength, stamina
and soundness than those of any other nation.
This
was the birth of the U.S. Remount Service, and is the primary
focus of a fascinating new book, titled "War Horse,"
written by authors Ed Roberts and Phil Livingston.
