Super League News
The
French cemented their position at the top of the Samsung
Super League leaderboard when repeating their opening-leg
success in La Baule with another convincing victory
in Rome yesterday, but the result was only decided
in the later stages of the second round which saw
a ferocious battle for the minor placings.
Course-designer
Giovanni Bussus challenging track took a heavy
toll and the winners finished with 16 faults on the
board while the only double-clear performance of the
day secured runner-up spot for Ireland. This was a
real surprise as the Irish were fielding a relatively
untried squad and two of the horses were clearly struggling
at this level of competition but Babington produced
two super-cool rounds from the Irish-bred Carling
King and when Cameron Hanley followed an opening four-fault
effort with a clear from Jerome that proved good enough.
|
The
French did not have such a clear run this time and shared
the lead with Ireland, Germany and Great Britain at the
end of the first round with all four teams carrying 12 faults
each.
The
Dutch and Italians were already in trouble at this stage.
A good result for Wout Jan Van der Schans was required if
Holland was to stay afloat but there were an unusually large
number of falls, refusals and eliminations and the Dutchman
paid the price for an inaccurate line to the second last,
hitting the turf when Broere VDL Atlantic missed his stride
here.
It
was even tougher for the Italians who really wanted to put
on a good show in front of the home crowd and their President,
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who arrived to present the prizes
on a beautifully sunny afternoon in the Piazza di Siena.

Historic
Newspapers Recycling Scheme Makes Horse Sense
When
it comes to recycling its stocks of unwanted newspapers,
Historic Newspapers is in a one-horse race. The UK's largest
archived newspaper business is racing ahead with its latest
environment scheme, producing bedding material for horses
and other animals. The company has discovered that newspapers
make ideal bedding for all types of animal. It currently
produces 150 tonnes of material each year which is enough
to supply bedding for over 2,000* horses.
Historic
Newspapers, based in, Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway already
supplies this unique bedding material to a variety of horse
owners and farmers in the area. It is fresh and clean and
contains no bugs or germs. As an added bonus, the used bedding
material can then be recycled a second time as it breaks
down easily in soil - making a useful fertiliser.
John
Druce, owner of Historic Newspapers is delighted to have
found a use for its unwanted newspapers: "We are keen
to do our bit to protect the environment and avoid using
landfill. We do have a regular quantity of newspapers which
we no longer require, usually recent newspapers which we
have in very large quantities. We've discovered that shredded
newspaper is one of the best bedding materials for horses
and farm animals. It is very hygienic and comfortable and
also inexpensive."

Ireland
Second At Rome Nations Cup Today
AGAINST
ALL THE PREDICTIONS, Ireland's last-minute team of four
took Second place at the prestigious Rome Nations Cup
in Italy today (Friday).
Lt.
David O'Brien's withdrawal earlier in the week caused
Lt. Shane Carey to be hurriedly flown out with his Grand
Prix horses, and the team, under Chef dEquipe
Lt. Col. Gerry Mullins, had only days to prepare for
the daunting competition.
However,
a magnificent double clear from anchorman Kevin Babington
today, making his 2003 European debut, and a clear and
a four-fault round from Mayo's Cameron Hanley, catapulted
Ireland over the heads of heavily-fancied Britain and
Germany to finish on a total score of 24 faults.
|
France,
winners at La Baule Nations Cup two weeks ago, once again
proved too much for the opposition and glided into First
position on a total score of just 17 faults.
However, Ireland's Second today is a big improvement on
La Baule's equal Fourth finish, and gives them a much-needed
seven points in the Samsung Super League, now bringing a
total of 10.5 points after two competitions. Babington's
double clear was the only one of the Nations Cup at Rome
today.

Super League News
: Can They Do It Again?
France
got the best starting position when the draw was made
for the second leg of the Samsung Super League which
takes place at the Piazza di Siena in Rome today (23
May 2003).
Already holding the whip hand after their impressive
opening victory in La Baule 11 days ago the reigning
World Champions are in top form, but they were not
firm favourites with all the Chefs dEquipe who
made a forecast of how the line-up will look at the
end of the competition.
|
Despite
the fact that the Italians finished bottom of the order
at the French fixture Britains Derek Ricketts, Belgiums
Lucien Somers, Swedens Sylve Sondestrand, and Germanys
Peter Weinberg all tipped the home team.
Irelands
Lt Col Mullins however said the French would be the ones
to beat and French Chef dEquipe, Jean-Maurice Bonneau,
was confident that his side could make it two-in-a-row.
"We have the luck of the draw" he said, "but
we will be hoping to reverse the positions you see on the
board today!".

Pippa
- The Road To The Top Out Now
The
new video, Pippa Funnell - the road to the top, produced
by Equestrian Vision, was launched at Badminton Horse
Trials. The film takes a look behind the scenes at
one of Britain's most popular event riders, reliving
her greatest moments in the sport of Eventing.
In her own modest way Pippa, and those close to her,
tell the story of her rise to the top, following her
career from the early days on ponies to European Champion
and Badminton winner.
Her mum, Jenny Nolan, takes us through her early years
with family pictures of her daughter on ponies. Ruth
McMullen, Pippa's mentor and provider of Sir Barnaby,
describes nurturing her talent, which culminated in
them becoming National Champions. The programme also
provides a unique insight into Pippa's daily routine

FEI
Eventing World Cup News
The
ninth leg of the FEI Eventing World Cup will take
place within the scope of the Rodderberg Park Derby
(GER) from 22 to 25 May. This is the first time that
a World Cup qualifier is held in Germany.
The
Eventing World Cup is organised as a three-star level
CIC (One Day Event) qualifiers and a three-star level
Final.
|
To
make the competition more thrilling and easier to follow
for spectators, Rodderberg organisers have placed the Cross
Country start and finish line within the Jumping Showground.
Also, just in time for the World Cup, the surface of the
4,200 m long Cross Country track has been significantly
improved. It was first sand back-filled with 1,200 tons
of special silicate sand; then, hundreds of thousands of
little holes were drilled and filled with sand; and finally,
the track was newly seeded and rolled. Thanks to this method,
the rooting of the grass has been enhanced and the ground
takes in more water than before. Says show manager Dirk
Schneider: "At Rodderberg we canter on cloud nine now.
We have achieved ideal absorbability and elasticity and
the strains that weigh down the horses have lessened decisively."
However, participants have to be more than well prepared
since the steep course demands strong stamina.
Another
exciting feature are the eight newly added obstacles located
around the nearby Omya Pool. "They will be rather tricky",
reveals course designer Wilfried Thiebes.

Eriskays
Tandem Team Take Windsor Driving Trials Title
A
team of Scottish bred Eriskay ponies has taken the Tandem
title at this year's Windsor Driving Trials.
Linton Ben Oss and Linton Luath, bred by Anne Bell in
East Lothian, took victory with their owner Lesley Cox
whose successes with the team include the 2001/2 Srongid
P Indoor Tandem Driving Championships and the 2002 Castle
Kennedy Title.
Lesley and partner Andrew Gooden, who acts as groom,
have worked very hard for success, both holding down
full time jobs while campaigning the pair around the
country from their base in Sandbach, Cheshire. They
are very dedicated to the breed, having visited the
islands where the breed originated to learn more of
their history. |
Lesley
said: " I am delighted that Lu and Ossie have achieved
so much, they are living proof that while Eriskays are the
remnant of an ancient breed, they're very much 21st century
ponies, able to take on the best of modern ponies and win.
They're a very versatile pair and even competed under saddle
in the Eriskay Ridden class at the Royal Highland Show last
year.
"Ben
Oss is very much an ambassador for the breed, when he's
not out there competing he's very happy talking to the crowds
at the British Equine Event every November, when he lives
on site as an exhibit!"
The
Eriskay breed is still classed as category 1 "critical"
by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, although interest is
growing and numbers are increasing steadily. Following a
visit by Society Inspectors to Coll recently, two more young
stallions owned by Sheila MacKinnon, have been added to
the register, bringing the number of stallions to 14.

Lusitano
Display Team To Visit Hickstead Derby Meeting
A
display team of Portuguese Lusitano horses is to make its
first UK appearance during the British Jumping Derby Meeting
(August 14-17) at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead.
Lusitanos
were once highly-prized horses used in close-combat warfare.
Today they are used to round up and control cattle on the
Iberian plains. The qualities once used for war are now
earning international acclaim as the basis for the new discipline
of Working Equitation, which comprises dressage, obstacles,
speed and cattle penning.
Most
of the riders in the display team compete in Working Equitation
in Portugal, which won the World Championship last year.
The
team of eight horses and riders, sponsored by the Portuguese
Breeders Association, will give daily displays in Hickstead's
International Arena during the four day show. The visit
is being organised by Sherene Rahmatallah from Sussex Lusitanos
at Ifield, West Sussex.

Libbys
Moves To Help Pony Schooling
New version of innovative training aid launched
Leading
webbing tack manufacturer Libbys is marketing a pony-sized
version of the Lungie Bungie training aid, devised for them
by successful event riders Lucinda and Clayton Fredericks.
The
aid, launched at the 2002 BETA Trade Fair, has been popular
in this country and abroad, is designed to encourage horses
and ponies to develop the muscles enabling them to find
self carriage and to help mouthing young animals and re-mouthing
older ones.
"We
had so many inquiries from people who had used it successfully
on horses and also wanted it for ponies that we thought
it was a gap in the market which had to be filled,"
said Libby Virgoe, founder of the Plymouth-based company.
"It
is not a gadget to be used by children, but a training aid
which can be a great help in schooling ponies for general
riding or for the show ring."

The
Kabardin
The world's best mountain breed.
Reliable & sure-footed, very economical to keep.
Good for endurance rides in a rough terrain.
The Kabardin horse, well-known since the 16th century,
is one of Russia's "extreme" breeds, that
is a horse meant for living under extreme Conditions.
The Kabardin thrives in the most difficult mountain
terrain, at high altitudes, undeterred by snow and fast
rivers. Temperamentally, it is a tractable and obedient
animal, being both hardy and infinitely enduring. |
It
is safe to say that the Kabardin is the world's best mountain
breed.
The Kabardin has been bred by the mountain tribesmen of
the Northern Caucasus. Like many Russian breeds it is a
product of centuries of primitive selective breeding for
survival under the harshest conditions. That wondrous steed
is derived from the horses of the steppe people crossed
with Karabakh, Persian and Turkmenian strains.
The Kabardin is the principal breed of the Northern Caucasus,
and is widely used to improve native stock in Armenia, Azerbaijan,
and Georgia. The best Kabardins are raised at the Karachai
and Malka studs.

From
The Bank's Perspective
At some point your small business will require additional
capital in order to continue growing. It may be that you
want to finance an indoor arena, buy
a new tractor, or purchase some top breeding stock. Perhaps
you are a start-up looking for funds to get your venture
off the ground. Or you hear of an existing business for
sale that you recognize as a great opportunity. You go down
to your local bank, and they indicate you will need a business
plan. What are they really looking for and how do they make
their financing decisions?
The minimum requirements in the application process include
the bank loan application form and a business plan that
contains: a cover letter or executive summary; background
information regarding the business and the owner; proposal
specifics - how much money do you want; sales and expense
projections and assumptions; historical financial information
for the last two to three years; and a personal financial
statement for the last two
years.
If you are looking for $100,000 or less, the bank will probably
use CREDIT SCORING to determine whether you are granted
the loan or not. This
system is based on your business and business principal's
past credit history. Their rule of thumb is to examine the
5 C's. These are: Character,
Commitment, Cash flow, Collateral and Conditions
