TV
Ads On Horses On The Roads Launched
Thanks
to lobbying by the British Horse Society, the government
has included riding on the road as part of its road
safety Think! campaign. The new specially made for
television thirty second announcement will be launched
jointly by the BHS and the DTLR (Department of Transport,
Local Government and the Regions) at Badminton on
3 May.
|
Horse
riders everywhere will be delighted at this recognition
of riders as vulnerable road users. "If motorists were
more aware of the dangers, there would be far fewer accidents"
said Sheila Hardy, BHS head of safety, "and these 'ads'
will be a very effective way of getting the message across
to drivers. We are all very grateful to the government for
their support in this.
"The
BHS is hoping that every TV station in the country will
run the 'ads' regularly. To have a horse killed in this
way is devastating. Many accidents could be avoided if drivers
understood why it is important to pass riders wide and slow.
Television companies have it in their power to get the message
across; let's hope they take it."
There
will be posters and leaflets available to anyone who wants
to boost the campaign by distributing these to their local
garages, car showrooms, supermarkets and libraries.

Impaired Riders Are Handicapped Only If There Are
No Horses To Ride In International Competition
HUNTINGTON,
NY May 3, 2002 - Close your eyes and picture
this: your wonderfully talented horse, precise in
his transitions, follows the lead of his rider and
partner. In less than a week of training together,
they move freely around the dressage arena exhibiting
the finesse of champions. Horses and riders listen
for signals that guide them through the next movement.
They track right to A and counter canter to B. And
then you realize with a thrill: The rider cannot see!
|
Blind or visually impaired, the only real handicap these
equestrians face is not having a competitive horse to ride
in an exciting new international dressage championship scheduled
this summer on Long Island in New York.
Hopefully,
generous horse owners will see the need to make available
sound, trained and fit horses up to Level 4 as mounts for
blind and visually impaired riders, as well as other riders
with a disability competing in the first Inner Vision Championships
(IVC) for Riders with a Disability. The competition will
be held July 9-13 at Willow Tree Farm at Caumsett State
Historic Park in Huntington, NY.

Horse
welfare book
First
book on Australian horse welfare and protection
ever published.
An invaluable reference book for secondary and tertiary
students completing horse studies. Written by freelance
writer/librarian/secondary school teacher. Professionally
edited and designed. Sold to public libraries, secondary
schools, TAFE colleges and horse enthusiasts both
here and interstate.
They
Shoot Horses, Don't They? is the first book to focus
on the welfare of Australian horses living under
our unique conditions. It covers common welfare
aspects, including care and training, as well as
industry issues and government regulation. Every
chapter contains facts, extracts, statistics, case
studies and expert commentary on horse issues in
Australia.
|
They
Shoot Horses, Don't They? brings together, for the first
time in a single volume, coverage of the major issues in
horse welfare and care in this country. Information has
been gathered from hundreds of sources, including films,
newsletters, interviews and web sites, and the book is fully
indexed, to assist in your research and reference.
[There
is] a public lack of awareness/understanding regarding the
nature of horses; the physical and psychological requirements
of their welfare and the true situation regarding the extent
of cruelty, abuse and neglect to which many are subjected
in contemporary Australia. If this [book] were available
to the public it would address these issues and hopefully
precipitate reactions which would in turn influence others.'

Researcher Studies the Effect of Viral Infection on Allergic
Airway Diseases in Horses
BATON
ROUGELSU researchers in the School of Veterinary Medicine
have begun a study to investigate the effect of viral infections
on the immune response of neonatal foals, specifically if
exposure to influenza virus reduces the risk for developing
recurring airway obstruction (RAO) later in life.
"This
study is an evolution of many things weve been investigating
to understand equine airway disease. Its become pretty
obvious that RAO disorders are a result of allergic reactions,"
said Dr. David Horohov, principal investigator and professor
of veterinary immunology. "With this study, were
hoping to provide insight into the consequence of early
viral exposure and the tendency of horses to develop allergic
immune response in their lungs," said Horohov.
Fifteen
to 20 percent of horses worldwide suffer from RAO, a condition
similar to human asthma, representing a significant impact
on the equine population and industry. While RAO typically
affects older horses, younger horses may have a less severe
form of the disease. There is also evidence of a relationship
between other inflammatory airway disease in young performance
horses and RAO in older horses. All breeds of horses are
affected.
Although
it is believed that RAO develops from allergic reactions,
researchers still question why the other 80 percent of horses
worldwide are not susceptible to the allergic airway response
even though they may be exposed to the same allergens.
It
is currently believed that exposure to infectious agents
early in life may help prevent later allergic complications.
In other related studies, heavily parasitized horses were
protected, while other horses were more susceptible to the
development of allergic airway response. According to Horohov,
this is similar to what may be seen in humans in underdeveloped
countries. "Asthma problems were not typical in underdeveloped
countries until the incidence of parasitism and other infectious
diseases was reduced through the use of modern drugs and
vaccinations," he said.

Show Jumping launches new Olympia Shopping Village
There

favourite Christmas show, the Olympia International

of the world famous event have just given us another.
Olympia
is known not only for its world-class show jumping

it offers just before Christmas. The great news is
that the shopping will be even bigger and better from
2002 with the launch of The Olympia Shopping Village.
The new area, which will be located in the National

Four
Legged Friend For Son Of Catherine Zeta Jones
Swansea-born actress Catherine Zeta Jones is determined
that her two-year old son Dylan will not lose touch
with his Welsh heritage. So, she was naturally delighted
when the Welsh Pony & Cob Society presented her
with a Welsh Mountain pony especially chosen for Dylan.
As
President of the Noah's Ark Appeal, the Welsh actress
joined cricketer Ian Botham in Cardiff on Saturday
April 27th, where the pair took part in a walk to
raise money for the charity - which aims to build
Wales's first ever children's hospital. The pony was
presented to Ms Jones shortly before the walk, although
she opted to complete the walk on two legs instead
of four.
The seven year-old pony - Highland Jinks - has taught
countless children to ride, under the expert supervision
of Kathleen James, who has bred and successfully shown
Welsh Mountain ponies for the past thirty years. When
asked why 'Jinks' was chosen for Dylan, Ms James was
in no doubt that the pony's attributes make him a
natural choice for children:

Sad
Demise of a Much Loved Horse
It
is with great sadness that the ILPH (International
League for the Protection of Horses) has to announce
the death of ILPH Observe, a 26 year old thoroughbred
gelding who had an outstanding career in National
Hunt racing.
ILPH Observe, or Hobbie as he was affectionately known,
came to ILPH Glenda Spooner Farm in a severely emaciated
state with badly neglected teeth and feet in February
1999.
In his long and successful National Hunt career during
the 1980's, he had 18 wins and 12 places out of 40
starts to his credit including the Cathcart Cup and
the Christie's Foxhunter Chase and Tripleprint Gold
Cup in 1982 when ridden by John Francome and trained
by Fred Winter.
|
John
Francome who was saddened to hear the news rode his 1,000
race win on Observe, says, "When he first came to us
at Fred Winter's he jumped badly left handed but never stopped
improving and gave me some super rides. He was looked after
by Harry Foster who was one of Fred's older lads and had
the stable name of Tiddles - I don't know why."

Cross
Country Trail Ride To Aid Children
Why
ride 1900 miles on horseback? It takes an adventurous spirit,
determination, skill, and a cause. Trail boss Richard Fipps
and the cowboys who will join him in the ride from Cherokee
County, Alabama to Vernal, Utah know the trip will not be
easy. There will be delays, breakdowns and setbacks. That
is when they will remember the reason they are riding -
hungry and hurting children.
A
six-year-old girl in the inner-city whose mother sold her
to buy drugs. A migrant worker's son who has not had a decent
meal in months. A child who lives in the sewers of Nogales,
Arizona. A teen who attends a youth program after school
to escape the violence at home. They, and children like
them, are the reason.
On
April 26, 2002, Fipps and the others will begin Riding for
the Children. The adventure will last approximately three
and a half months and take riders from northeastern Alabama
to the Colorado/Utah border, passing through numerous communities,
including: Memphis, TN; Little Rock, AR; Tulsa and Oklahoma
City, OK; Amarillo, TX; Colorado Springs and Denver, CO.
"We
started talking about the ride kind of by accident",
says Fipps. "The more serious we got, the more I wanted
to find someone who was helping hungry kids in America.
You see celebrities on TV asking you to support children
everywhere else, but there are needy children and needy
parents in our own country."

on the Sunday 22nd September, British Dressage has
changed the dates of the Mercedes-Benz National Dressage
Championships which were due to take place over the
same weekend from 19th - 22nd September. The Mercedes-Benz
National Dressage Championships will now be held 1
week later from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th September

|
The
Championships were already due to see significant changes
in 2002 as the show will grow from three to four days and
the arena layout will change to benefit spectators. There
will be two arenas instead of three bringing spectators
closer to the action.

TV
Producer Anticipates (his own) Injury Free Badminton
Somewhere
in Melvin Coxs California home sits a stack of slightly
tattered British newspapers. Every now and then hell
pull the stack out, glance over a particular set of articles,
and be reminded of the awesome power of the horse.
Three
years ago this week, as the articles reveal, Cox had an
unforgettable run-in with such equine might. On a rainy
afternoon at the 1999 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse
Trials, he became seriously injured during the cross-country
phase of the event not unusual for a rider, but Cox,
now 50, was recording highlights of the event in the capacity
of a videographer and television producer.
Coming
out of a lake, Australian Stuart Tinneys horse, Tex,
veered off course, jumped the fence in front of which Cox
had been positioned and landed amidst the spectators in
a viewing area. Cox, who was knocked backwards over the
fence with a video camera on his shoulder, suffered a broken
left forearm. A woman spectator was taken to hospital with
a broken collarbone. The incident seen live on closed
circuit television by spectators at Badminton and via tape
delay on the BBC was unsettling for everyone including
Mr. Tinney who, although swiftly coming to the aid of the
injured, was later treated for shock.
The
accident, including dramatic photos caught by nearby photographers,
became front-page news in Britain the next day.
Cox
will return to Badminton this year, his first visit since
the accident. Joining him will be a multinational production
team that will gather footage and conduct interviews for
future documentary presentations. With its colour, pageantry
and flare not to mention the incredible tests of
horsemanship the Badminton Horse Trials encapsulates
the ideal ingredients for high quality equestrian programming.
"We
would not think of doing this series without a visit to
Badminton," says Cox. "There is no question that
it is one of the most exciting and prestigious events on
the equestrian calendar."

old mare, with she Sjef showing how they start off the young
horse, with demonstrations of the correct exercises. In

Kimberly
Vinoski Overtakes the Lead at 2002 Rolex Kentucky
Three-Day Event, Presented By Bayer, April 25 - 28
|
Lexington,
KY-April 26, 2002-With a cross-country phase that saw a
shake-up in the leaderboard, Kimberly Vinoski of Scottsville,
VA, moved into first position in the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day
Event, presented by Bayer, at the Kentucky Horse Park in
Lexington, April 25-28, 2002.
Vinoski, 28, who was sitting in fourth position following
the completion of dressage on Friday, posted a clear cross-country
round, one of only four on the day, with Plain Dealing Farm's
nine-year-old Winsome Adante to finish on her dressage score
of 48.20 penalty points. Her faultless ride took place in
the morning, before steady rain affected the footing.
"I would have been more likely to ride Winsome Adante
in this afternoon's conditions because he is more familiar
to me and handles this kind of footing better," said
Vinoski, who withdrew her second entry, Royal Venture, scheduled
to begin the cross-country phase at 3:40 p.m. Eight other
riders also choose not to start the afternoon's cross-country
competition. William Fox-Pitt, 33, of Great Britain was
simply stunning with the 16-year-old grey New Zealand-bred
Thoroughbred gelding, Stunning. He, too, ran in the morning
and finished on his dressage score of 48.60 penalty points.
"It's the nature of the sport, you have to risk your
luck," said Fox-Pitt simply.
