Go Ahead For BHS Kawasaki Hunter
Trials
The BHS Kawasaki Hunter Trials, on hold because of
FMD, are to go ahead now, with the first competition to be held on Sunday 10
June at Moreton Stables in Dorset. |
This venue has been chosen for the first qualifier
because it is situated on arable land with no livestock, and as they have been
holding events there for several weeks now, they are familiar with the
precautionary measures that need to be taken. There have been no cases of foot
and mouth in Dorset.
Main event sponsor Kawasaki Commercial Products,
who have supported the postponement of the qualifiers during the outbreak of
FMD, are delighted to support the go ahead. We are satisfied that the BHS
has done a thorough risk assessment and will be responding to MAFF and BEF
guidelines, and that the event poses absolutely no danger of spreading foot and
mouth said Jack Ford, Sales & Marketing Manager for Kawasaki
Commercial Products. We are delighted that the Kawasaki BHS Hunter Trial
series can now go ahead, and we look forward to an exciting series of
competitions.

Ainsley Vince and Catch
22 Best Four Olympians to Win $100,000 EMO Grand Prix at HITS
Catskills |
ELLENVILLE, NY (May 27, 2001)--Ainsley Vince, 24,
of Milton, Ontario, Canada, riding Catch 22 out-jumped a field of 42 horses to
win the $100,000 EMO Grand Prix today at HITS Catskills in Ellenville, New
York. "It was a bit of an intimidating field to walk into," said
Vince, referring to the start order that included four Olympians-Margie Engle,
Nona Garson, Todd Minikus, and Eric LaMaze. Vince has represented Canada twice,
including at the World Cup in Las Vegas last year, and has competed against
some of these show jumping superstars before. Going into the jump-off today,
she said she'd hoped for a clear round and sixth place, but she finished more
than two seconds faster than her closest competitor, second place Jeffery
Welles on Riviera. "I never realized my horse was that fast," said
Vince. Catch 22, owned by Vince and Trinity Farm earned $30,000 for today's
win. Catch 22 is an 11-year-old Dutch warmblood that Vince bought seven years
ago. "He's my pet. S&L Farms originally imported him and Riviera.
McLain Ward had him and we purchased him from McLain," said Vince who
trained Catch 22 to Grand Prix and began showing him at that level in 1998.
"He's my baby. I love him."

Farrier-Friendly" series -
Consider Care Even When They are Bare
The decision to shoe or not is one that is based
on an evaluation of three main concerns. The first being the quality of health
of the horses hoof (i.e. the presence of any deep cracks or extreme distortions
of the wall). The second being a noticeable weakness in the limb-to-hoof
connection, resulting in a lack of weightbearing capacity for the horse (i.e.
Collapsed "urderran" heels, Longtoe / Lowheel syndrome, Club
footedness, etc.). |
And last, the consideration of the workload.
Certain jobs the horse may be asked to perform may require a particular type of
shoe. For instance, a Trail horse will need traction for those slippery spots,
whereas a Reining horse that moves quickly and slides will need a non-traction
type shoe. We will discuss the various types of traction and their purpose a
little later.
Seeing the Signs of Stress
When observing your horses feet there are some
general notes on anatomy you must be aware of.
The single most important point is that you should
realize that your horses hooves are a result of a metabolic process in his
body. This process is no different from your nail growth. Diet and the type of
exercise your horse faces has a direct affect on the growth process of the
bodys horn producing times. If you or your horse become ill some signs of
bodily stress can be noticed. For example, the skin, hair and horn will become
dull in appearance and in extreme cases these tissues may deteriorate and
"slough-off". It has been said that the horses feet are its barometer
and, as good horse owners, we should learn how to read it. Lets begin by
defining what kind of stress can take place. Generally speaking there are two:
metabolic and mechanical.
