Challenge In Olympic Year
Back
in history the severity of the Badminton course used to
reach a rotational peak in Olympic year. Now the challenge
for the world's premier Event is equally demanding every
year.
This
year is the third with the new layout at the Mitsubishi
Motors Badminton Horse Trials, starting and finishing in
the main arena, and convention dictates the direction alternates.
The course will visit many familiar landmarks, but some
15 new fences will give an exciting new feel, even for those
riders who have tried for the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy several
times before.
Course
Designer Hugh Thomas was asked which were the most difficult
fences and he said "I have tried hard this year to
make the riders think all the way round. There are lots
of alternatives and especially lots of slightly different
lines through combinations, with a choice of striding, so
the riders will have to decide the best way for their particular
horse." Please

Mark
Phillips Appointed As Burghley Course Designer
Captain
Mark Phillips, C.V.O., has been appointed to design the
course for the world famous Burghley Horse Trials for the
years 2005 to 2007 inclusive.
Captain
Phillips, who won the Event himself in 1973 riding Maid
Marion, was previously the course designer 1989-1996 and
1998-2000.
Of
the appointment Andrew Tulloch, Director of Burghley Horse
Trials said: We are delighted to be welcoming Mark
Phillips back to Burghley Horse Trials. Mark Phillips
fresh style of fence design will be both interesting for
the public and thought provoking for the riders. Over the
years that Mark was designing at Burghley the stature of
the event rose significantly. When we changed Course Designer
in the last rotation, the committee publicly said that they
hoped that, in future years, they would be able to resume
their long, happy and successful association with Mark Phillips
and I am delighted that we are doing just that. Our thanks
go to Wolfgang Feld for doing an excellent job. Please

Cross survey uncovers consequences of poor choices
in horse ownership
A new survey by The Blue Cross animal welfare charity has
found that a third of horse owners had bought a horse which
then proved unsuitable for their needs. It also discovered
that nearly half of those who subsequently sold on a problem
horse had not sought any help in remedying the situation.
75 per cent of those who did seek help found it either very
or quite successful in solving the problems.
Half
of the 1000 owners surveyed (496 in total) had either given
up or sold on horses at some point in the past. The biggest
single reason given was that they had simply outgrown the
horse (37 per cent) or needed something more advanced (10
per cent). However 7 per cent cited behavioural issues,
while other reasons included Didnt like him
(3 per cent) or Too difficult to ride (6 per
cent). Financial reasons accounted for 6 per cent of the
total. 31 per cent gave unspecified other reasons
as to why they had sold or given up their horse. Please

Easy
option for digestive upsets in foals
Digestive
upsets in the new-born foal can be a nightmare for horse
breeders during the spring, with the associated problems
of rapid weight loss and weakness. Now thanks to Diarsanyl,
a practical innovation from CEVA Animal Health, protection
couldnt be simpler or more effective.
Diarsanyl
is quickly and easily administered by oral syringe in a
specially formulated palatable paste to enhance absorption.
It works by protecting the intestinal mucosa which carries
out the vital function of screening and separating the gut
contents from the body. Containing montmorillonite, which
is 90 times more absorbant than kaolin, Diasanyl can absorb
gut toxins produced in digestive upsets. At the same time
it delivers a dose of electrolytes and dextrose to boost
energy and aid recovery.

South
Essex Offers Low Cost Help With Vet Bills
An
"accident only" healthcare plan is the main element
of a new "£100 policy" devised by equine
experts South Essex Insurance Brokers.
The
Equine Easyplan policy allows owners to recover up to £750
for vet fees - although they have to pay the first £135
of any claim - arising from accidental injury to a horse
or pony. And because of rising instances of colic, they
can also opt for £1,500-worth of help towards fees
for emergency surgery.
The
policy has been introduced to meet the needs of people operating
on smaller budgets but still wanting the security of good
insurance. It is for animals up to 15.3hh at grass and being
used for hacking and gymkhanas and for brood mares. SEIB
supports the welfare work done by equine charities and "re-homed"
horses over 16hh can also be covered. Please

Magical
Malin Jumps To Glory In Goteborg.........
Malin
Baryard raised the roof off the Scandinavium Arena
in Gothenburg today when sweeping to a superb victory
in the last qualifying leg of the 2003/2004 FEI World
Cup Jumping season.
In front of her proud and loud home crowd, the 29
year old rider from Norrkoping in central Sweden galloped
home with H&M Butterfly Flip to secure maximum
points and a total of 350,000 Swedish Kroner in prizemoney
while confirming her place at the series Final which
kicks off in Milan in 10 days time.
Course designer Olaf Petersen set them a tough first-round
track which Malin described as "tricky and big
with a couple of very difficult turn-backs
particularly to the last fence" but ten horse-and-rider
combinations left all the fences intact to go through
to the jump-off.

Eriksson
beats Freund at home soil-Freund wins third World
Cup title
Sweden¹s
Tomas Eriksson has done what no driver did this FEI
World Cup season: he beat triple World Cup Champion
Michael Freund! In front of an outraging Swedish crowd
in the Globen arena in Gothenburg, Eriksson stayed
ahead of Freund and his compatriot Christoph Sandmann
and climbed to the fourth place in the final standings.
The best three drivers from the first round, Eriksson,
Sandmann and Freund, had qualified for the winning
round. The times and penalty seconds of both rounds
were added together. OI hit two balls in the first
round and new that I had to go for it. I took a lot
of risks and was lucky to stay clear which put extra
pressure on Sandmann,¹ explains Eriksson. Sandmann
was unable to equal Eriksson¹s time in the speedy
course, which was set at 10 cm tighter than yesterday¹s
warm up competition, and knocked one ball down. Freund
however, driving with a wild card, knew that he had
to drive faster than his first round.

Kurten
Fails In Bid For World Cup Final Place
DESPITE
a determined campaign this winter, Ireland's Jessica
Kurten fell short of the required points to make the
World Cup Final in Milan when lowering a single pole
in the last World Cup qualifying competition in Gothenburg,
Sweden today (Sunday).
Irish
hopes were high on Friday when Kurten and her 10 yr
old mare <Quibell> took first place in the pre-qualifying
competition, beating current world champion Marcus
Ehning and <Anka> by just under half a second
on time. But today both Kurten and Ehning came adrift,
with Jessica picking up four faults in the first round,
and Marcus eight, with neither therefore qualifying
for the jump-off.
