Kurten Fails In Bid For World Cup Final Place

DESPITE a determined campaign this winter, Ireland's Jessica Kurten fell short of the required points to make the World Cup Final in Milan when lowering a single pole in the last World Cup qualifying competition in Gothenburg, Sweden today (Sunday).

Irish hopes were high on Friday when Kurten and her 10 yr old mare <Quibell> took first place in the pre-qualifying competition, beating current world champion Marcus Ehning and <Anka> by just under half a second on time. But today both Kurten and Ehning came adrift, with Jessica picking up four faults in the first round, and Marcus eight, with neither therefore qualifying for the jump-off.

Kurten would have needed the 20 points that come with a first place today if she were to stand any chance of qualifying for the final.

Outright, and popular, winner at Gothenburg was Sweden's own Malin Baryard, riding <Butterfly Flip>, who picked up the first prize of 38,000 euro.

Eighteen riders and horses from the Western European League will compete in the World Cup Final at Milan in two weeks' time. Sadly, this year Ireland will not be represented.
