The
Horse in the Ancient World
BY
ANN HYLAND
TO BE PUBLISHED: 3 APRIL 2003
A
unique overview of the uses and development of the horse
in ancient Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia.
This book '. . . should change the way we think about both
the military and the cultural history of early empires.'
Professor F. E. Walbank CBE, FBA
Writers
have spun fantasies around the relationship between horse
and man, from Pegasus and the centaurs of ancient Greek
mythology to Jonathan Swift's Houynhnms and Yahoos. However
it is less common for historians to analyse the decisive
role played by the horse in some of the main episodes of
human history.
Written
by an experienced breeder, trainer and skilled endurance
rider who knows what a horse can and cannot do, this book
explores the role of the horse in ancient civilisations
including the Hittites, the Seleukid Kingdom in Mesopotamia,
the Steppe and Hun tribes. Ann Hyland uses her own experience
to support evidence from Babylonia, Assyria, Palestine,
Egypt and Greece about all aspects of horsemanship and its
importance to rulers such as Ramses II, Solomon and Alexander
the Great. Illustrated with a wide variety of images from
documentary, archaeological and literary sources, it offers
a global perspective on the period 2300 BC to 300 BC.

Sow
Your Pastures With Nutritional Herbal Seeds
Pottstown,
PA-(February 7, 2003)-Horses are herbivores and are
genetically predisposed to free graze a variety of
herbs, forage, and grasses. Since their domestication,
horses are no longer able to roam free to select the
herbs they instinctively seek for nutritional value.
Equilite, Inc. is a strong believer in the importance
of returning horses to their natural roots and has
created a new improved form of the Sow Your Seeds
product line. Sow Your Seeds equine grazing herbs
bring your horses one step closer to their natural
diet.
Sow Your Seeds are easy to plant herbs that can be
planted at home, at the racetrack, at horse shows
and events, or even harvest fresh herbs to take on
the road. The mixture contains easy to grow perennials
and self-sowing annuals nutritionally balanced for
a healthy equine diet. Equilite's popular Sow Your
Seeds Pasture Blend is comprised of hearty plants
that can withstand heavy traffic in the heartland
of your field. The herbs can be planted in strips
or patches of your field to mix in with the rest of
your pasture grass. Please

The
Training Tree: Suppleness
WAVERLY, WV--Suppleness is another mythunderstood word
in the horse industry. Suppleness simply means the ability
to bend without stiffness. We want the horse to have
loose, pliable jointshis hocks, his hips, his knees,
his shoulders, his poll and his jaw. There are other
joints that must be flexible, too, but generally when
we talk about a horses ability to bend, were
talking about one or another of those major joints.
|
If
a horse stiffens any of these joints, that stiffness goes
through his whole body. If the horse braces in his poll
or jaw, for example, nothing else is going to be loose
because he is locked against the riders hand and
that stiffness is going affect all his other joints to
some degree. Stiffness or resistance in any joint causes
a disruption of the energy flow throughout the horse.
Smooth transitions are a sign of a supple horse and, vice
versa, jerky, jumpy or jarring transitions signal resistance
somewhere.
Just
as some people are suppler or stiffer by nature, horses
are individuals. Some have short bunchy muscles, short
necks, straight pasterns, or other conformation traits
that make flexibility more difficult to achieve. Others
have long, lean muscles, long necks, and perfect shoulder
and hip angles that make bending their joints very easy
for them. There are a lot of different exercises trainers
can use to help any horse become looser and suppler in
his joints. The key is that these exercises need to be
done while the horse is moving in order for him to become
truly supple.

Flies On Comfort Zone Equestrian - New Fly Rug
A
revolutionary cross breast fastening and permanent
neck cover are features of a new summer protection
fly rug from Comfort Zone Equestrian.
The neck cover has a heavy duty zip and Velcro fastening
to keep flies firmly at bay while at the same time
allowing the horse to easily put its head down to
graze. There is also a loop at the top of the cover
through which the headcollar crown can be put to secure
the cover further.
Based
on the Australian turnout paddock sheet, the summer
protection fly rug reflects UVA rays and is ultra
tough which means it can be used as both a turnout
and stable rug.
It
is also good for show horses as it stops the coat
bleaching.

The
Horse and Country Fair
Canadian "Horse Whisperer" Dan Franklin is
presenting his skills in Equine Communication in daily
demonstrations. Visitors to the fair will be able to
see Dan play with his equine companions in a unique
way, which might change their perception of the horse-human
relationship.
Dan,
who prefers to be described as an Equine Communicator,
has based his training on his love for horses, observing
and studying their behavior over the past 26 years.
Horses naturally communicate through play, and this
is the method Dan uses to "talk" to his equine
friends, with truly remarkable results. Dan has developed
a unique way of dealing with all kinds of horse problems,
such as lack of respect, nervousness and even more serious
instances of kicking and biting.

First
Premium Cleveland Bay Stallion in Powys
FOR
the first time ever, a Premium Cleveland Bay stallion
will stand in Powys for the season.
Good news for the region and the Cleveland Bay breed,
four-year-old Tregoyd Journeyman, owned by Colin and
Margaret Green looks set to have an outstanding future.
Worldwide there are only about 400 pure-bred breeding
mares with only about 80 foals born each year. The
breed features on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's
critical list.
"Tregoyd
Journeyman, who is 16.2hh with approximately 10in
bone, will run out with his mares as many of our other
stallions have done," says his breeder Colin
Green whose stud nestles at the foot of the Brecon
Beacons Park near Hay-on-Wye. "The
breed is known for its excellent temperament which
they pass on. |
"Although
we are keen to cover pure-bred mares, many people like to
cross the breed with thoroughbreds.
"The
Cleveland Bay is very versatile and is now used to produce
sport horses for dressage, show jumping and eventing,"
adds Colin.

Chill
Master Testimonial
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to congratulate you on your "Chill
Master" range of boots from Equitector. I have
found them to be extremely useful, but for a slightly
unorthodox reason than horse care and riding! Please
read on.
Since Summer 2002, I have been responsible for a friend's
mare, and as she is kept at a DIY livery yard all the
work - both mucky and otherwise, was done by myself.
A friend recommended Equitector boots to me, and so
shortly before Christmas I bought a pair of Chill Masters
. However, before I could put them to their intended
use, I was the victim of a serious road traffic accident,
sustaining multiple injuries that included a scarred
eye, two broken arms, and a broken left foot. |
Once
the plaster cast came off my leg, I found that I could not
walk whilst wearing "normal" fashion shoes; some
of them didn't even fit my foot anymore due to a bony lump
left on my foot from the healing process. I tried my as-yet
unused Chill Masters; not only did they fit perfectly, they
gently supported my foot and helped greatly in my learning
to walk again. Your "Easy Rider" technology actually
helped my balance while I was slowly regaining my strength,
and the supportive ankle padding in the boots was a bonus
too.

Dan
Franklin Presentation At The The Arab Horse Society
National Show
Dan's
involvement with Arabian horses goes back some twenty
years ago when he purchased his first Arabian. Since
then Dan has developed quite a unique breeding program
and his barn carries some of the oldest foundation
bloodlines of the purest Polish Arabians in the world.
On Dan's ranch in the heart of the Cariboo, in Northern
British Columbia, Canada his Arabian horses go back
to the foundation lines of Synbad, Aladdinn, Fadjur,
Silverdrift, Khemosabi Bask, Bey Shah, Fadaro, Ferzon,
just to name a few.
Dan's
horses live on 160 acres of natural forest habitat,
drink out of a lake and forage on some of the country's
finest grasses and herb vegetation there is to offer.
Dan's Arabians are very relaxed in their environment
and have very little stress in their lives. They feel
very safe and comfortable in their surroundings, and
their quiet disposition is attributed to their natural
enviroment.
|
Dan
has two outstanding stallions, Lyndale Flame Dancer, a great-great-grandson
out of Khemosabi and JC Aladdinn, a direct son out of the
world's famous Aladdinn. These two stallions have a very
quiet temperament, excellent conformation and very intelligent
minds, which each of them passes on to his foals.
In
Dan's estimation the Arabian horse is the most intelligent
horse in the world today. They are the people's choice when
it comes to photography, pleasure and showing. They are
the most prestigious horse in today's time, and are admired
by people of all walks of life.
