Horses by Road, Sea and Air
The
2nd International Conference on the transportation
of sport/breeding horses is to be held on the weekend
of 12th and 13th July at Hartpury College, Hartpury,
Gloucestershire.
It
is specifically aimed at horse transport industry
representatives and is expected to attract up to 300
delegates from all over the world.
|
The
Conference, funded by the Fédération Equestre
Internationale (FEI), the ILPH (International League for
the Protection of Horses) and the Massachusetts Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) will focus
on horse welfare during transport and will build upon the
1st Equine Transport Workshop, held in March 1999 in Middlebury,
Virginia, USA. That Workshop, sponsored by the MSPCA, updated
earlier research into Transport Stress in horses initiated
by the FEI and ILPH.
Says
Alex Atock, ILPH Consultant and Conference Secretary, "The
Conference will review transport risk factors and existing
guidelines for equine movement, seek to capture the perspective
of the industry on the practical aspects of managing horses
during transport, and will assess the safety and design
of transporters by road, sea and air."

Rare
Lipizzaner Comes To The Midlands Equine Fair
The
all-indoor Midlands Equine Fair, which is taking place
at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, on 8 &
9 March, is attracting a wide range of horse breeds,
but none has such a romantic history as the Lipizzaner.
There
are only 3,500 pure bred Lipizzaners in the world, and
they are best known as the horses that are the celebrities
at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Adult Lipizzaners
are usually white, and there will be several of them
in attendance at the Midlands Equine Fair - not least
the members of international four in hand driving champion
Dick Lane's teams. But they are likely to upstaged by
Neapolitano Inka (known as Buttons to his friends) who
is a very rare brown adult gelding, and who is making
his first visit to the Fair this year. |
Only
one in 400 adult Lipizzaners are brown, a statistic that
makes Buttons very special indeed. But if that were not
enough, Buttons also has a royal ancestor - his grandmother
was given to Her Majesty the Queen as a present from President
Tito of Yugoslavia. When Tito died the mare was sold to
Una Harley of the Starrock Stud near Shaftesbury, who has
been a successful breeder of Lipizzaners for over 35 years.
Buttons is a Yugoslavian cross Austrian Lipizzaner bred
by Una, who now lives in Wales with his owner Alan Thomas.

William
Starts Anew
The
World's official leading eventer William Fox Pitt starts
a new season and his preparations for a crack at this
year's Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (May
1-4), from a new base and backed by a new line-up of
sponsors.
William and his partner Alice Plunkett have moved with
the horses to Dorset and with support from a team of
backers; Equissage, Musto Clothing, Barrus, Biotal and
Monarch Equestrian, look set for a strong campaign.
|
Although
William has yet to win Badminton he came a close second
last year with Tamarillo, with whom he also won team silver
at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez. Tamarillo tops his
entries for this year along with stablemate, the surprise
Burghley winner, Highland Lad. Moon Man will also have an
entry but if tactics go to plan he and William will be crossing
the Atlantic the week before to contest the American, Rolex
Kentucky, event.
"To go one better at Badminton with Tamarillo would
be fantastic but that would be a perfect world. Badminton
will be a step into the unknown for Highland Lad but I hope
it will prove a natural progression and that he will cope
with the big atmosphere. And of course I am hoping for an
injury free event this year," said William whose success
last year came despite riding with a painful groin strain.

High-Point
Horse Infenitee++// Wins Sundowner Trailer
This
year's Sundowner High-Point Horse, the Arabian stallion
Infenitee++// (MHR Port Zar x Ga-Maara), racked up
more points in the Arabian Horse AssociationSM(AHASM)
Horse Achievement Awards program in one year--377--than
any previous winner. His achievement earned his owner/breeder
Margaret Vanden Broek of Norco, California, a two-horse
trailer from Sundowner, an AHA Corporate Partner.
But the real honor is not how many points Infenitee++//
earned but how he earned them.
|
In
2002, 11 different riders showed Infenitee++//. They ranged
from professional trainers to a first-time entry in native
costume. What's astonishing is that he wins championships
with beginners and amateurs as easily as he wins with trainers.
"We
have had just about every kind of rider you can think of
on him, and some didn't even have time to practice,"
says Lance Curtis, who trained the stallion and shows him
for Vanden Broek. "Or it's the first time they ride
him in the ring and he takes a national championship. He
is a very easy horse to work around and always willing to
work hard at impressing anyone who rides him."

Second
Ring and Hall of Fame Class added for 2003 Fidelity Investments
Jumper Classic
South Hamilton, MA-February 18, 2002-The Fidelity Investments
Jumper Classic has announced exciting changes for its 2003
edition of what has become a tradition of top show jumping
in New England. The 14th annual Fidelity Investments Jumper
Classic, which will take place September 3-7 at the Myopia
Schooling Fields, in South Hamilton, MA, will now run two
rings for competition everyday except Grand Prix Sunday.
"What
we're trying to do is make the days shorter and the show
run smoother without compromising any classes for exhibitors,"
explained Jumper Classic Manager, Peggy Lynch. "We'll
be evenly allotting the classes to both rings because even
though our second ring will be excellent, everyone wants
to get their chance in the big ring." On Sunday, the
big ring will be the focus for the $50,000 Fidelity Investments
AGA Grand Prix. "We want to devote everything on Sunday
to the featured events of the show, most notably the Grand
Prix itself," said Lynch.

New
Convenient Equine Cold Therapy Leg Wraps Introduced
The
most effective and certainly the least costly method of
physical therapy for the Equine athlete is routinely applying
cold therapy after exercise, schooling or showing.
There are two good reasons. First inflammation is a normal
event after physical exercise. This inflammation is like
a small brush fire. ..If you do not snuff it out quickly
it will rage into a major blaze and become more difficult
to control. Secondly, heat is damaging to tendons. Veterinary
studies show exercise decreased pH and increased core temperatures
of the tendons beyond physiologically healthy limits
Four
new products are available from Ice Horse/ First Ice , namely
The Knee to Ankle Wrap, Tendon Wraps, Hock Wraps and the
Big Black Boot for the hooves. These products and the First
Ice inserts provide comfortable, soothing cold for the horse,
without skin irritation, and eliminate the ice mess in the
stall.

British
Breeders Are Ready For Change
The
BEF "British Breeding" open meeting enjoyed
an excellent turn out of representatives from all
corners of the British breeding industry. In a lively
debate, which followed presentations by the Chairmen
of the seven Breeding Development Programme (BDP)
working groups, delegates welcomed the chance to engage
in this ground breaking programme and were eager to
comment.
|
Graham
Suggett emphasised the BEF's intention to facilitate and
encourage an infrastructure within which all breeders could
flourish, and said; "Participation in the initiatives
is entirely voluntary, but my hope is that many will choose
to join the planned schemes. Our plan seeks to help British-bred
horses better meet the demands of the European sport-horse
market, promote their successes, increase confidence of
buyers in our product, and see more of our international
riders competing on home grown horses."

Programme
For Borders Festival Of The Horse 2003
sponsored by Millers Town & Country
The programme for this year's Borders Festival of the
Horse was launched yesterday at Newark Castle near Selkirk
where 'Mary, Queen of Scots' (in the person of local
sidesaddle rider Vairi Wilson) was presented with a
copy of the festival programme by representatives of
festival organisers, the British Horse Society, and
sponsors Millers Town & Country.
The festival, which is also supported with funding from
the Scottish Enterprise Borders Events Support Scheme,
celebrates and showcases everything that makes the Scottish
Borders region Scotland's Horse Country. No less than
47 events will take place over the nine days between
Saturday 17 and Sunday 25 May. |
These
include major established events such as the Floors Castle
International Horse Trials (17 & 18 May), one-off opportunities
to have-a-go at activities such as carriage driving (17
May) and also the chance for riders to try new sports such
as 'hunting the clean boot' with the Berwickshire Blood
Hounds (23 May)!
The
festival also includes a special daily programme of guided
rides (19 - 25 May) giving riders a chance to enjoy the
varied and beautiful riding country of the Borders region.
A number of the routes have been chosen to visit sites associated
with local history and culture - including a Mary, Queen
of Scots ride to Fulton Castle on Monday 19 May following
part of the route she rode from Jedburgh to Hermitage Castle
to visit the wounded Earl of Bothwell in 1566.

Eric Clapton CD, an Arnold Schwarzenegger autographed
photograph and an entire set of original Womble books
signed by their author, Elizabeth Beresford. |
By
the end of the night, the auction and sale of tickets had
raised more than £3,000, equally divided between Brooke
and the MND Association. The money will go towards improving
the lives of working equines and their impoverished owners
in parts of the developing world and to providing care and
support for people living with MND in Sussex and Surrey.

Equus Medal Draws Huge Crowds Dignelli Big Winner!
Wellington,
FL February 17 Andre Dignelli showed when the
pressure is on he can perform! Crowned Champion of
the Equus Medal, he rode beautifully in a class full of
the most talented riders in the nation and the world. All
riders had to have represented the United States in a Nations
Cup, Pan Am Games or Olympic caliber competition. There
were riders from Texas, California, Germany and Paris, France
to name a few who traveled to be in this class.
Ringside
spectators were elbow-to-elbow and very enthusiastic and
well informed. George Morris enlightened the audience by
critiquing each ride from the announcers booth after
each performance. Everyone enjoyed watching these professional
Grand Prix riders attempt an equitation class. Many had
not performed in equitation in a number of years, but all
proved they still had stuff to make it to the top.

Strike
Three For Williams & Strapless In AHJF Hunter Classic
Spectacular
Valentines
Day was a day late for Emily Williams and Strapless, who
claimed their third victory in a row (2001, 2002, &
2003) on Saturday night, February 15, 2003 in the eighth
annual American Hunter-Jumper Foundation Hunter Classic
Spectacular held during the Winter Equestrian Festival in
Wellington, FL.
I
just cant believe it. I didnt think I could
win it twice and to win it three times, said Emily.
Her eyes and her smile said it all. As many classes as Williams
has won with Strapless, you would think she would get used
to her victories, but she claims each new win with the same
enthusiasm, appreciation and joy as if it were the first
time shed ever won anything.
The
pair seems to rise to the top, added her trainer,
Tom Wright. I just never thought it could happen again.
There
were 28 riders who qualified to compete in the first of
two rounds. Williams was 24th to go when she took over the
lead. Then the last competitor, McLain Ward on Monte Christo,
matched her score but claimed the lead by a judges
decision.

$50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix |
Ocala,
FL (February 18, 2003)Tracy Fenney of Flower Mount,
TX, and her mount Grace, a thoroughbred mare owned by Hidden
Lakes Farm, made it two in a row by winning Sunday's $50,000
Rio Vista Grand Prix at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. Fenney
and Grace also won the prior week's $50,000 Grand Prixa
remarkable achievement for the pair, considering that the
mare has just returned to competition after over a year's
absence from the ring due to an injury. Grace has certainly
proved that she is back on form and Tracy Fenney is enjoying
every moment of it.
Twenty-one
horse/rider combinations took to the field in the $50,000
Rio Vista Grand Prix. Course designer, Javier Fernandez,
set a challenging 14-obstacle course that whittled the entries
down to just four contenders.

World
Class Performance On The Road To Athens
A
3 day workshop at Hartpury College (23-25 February)
will address how the World Class Performance Programme
(WCP) will seek to meet the challenges of Athens in
the remaining 547 days to the Opening Ceremony. The
workshop turns the focus forward, following a constructive
debrief of the World Class Performance Team at the
second annual World Class Equestrian Seminar held
at the British Olympic Association Winter Training
Facility in Lofer, Austria, on 1-3 December 2002.
|
These
meetings are an important part of the rigorous process to
review performances in 2002 and plans for 2003/4 including
preparing for Athens, and meeting stringent BOA "fitness
for purpose" requirements for athletes.
On
the evening of Monday 24 February Simon Clegg, Chief Executive
of the British Olympic Association and Chef de Mission of
Team GB in Athens, will deliver the key note of the workshop,
setting out clearly what is required, physically and mentally,
of all athletes who aspire to succeed in Athens. He will
be followed by speakers from UK Sport, the English Institute
of Sport (EIS), a top track athlete coach and experts in
equine nutrition and care from Spillers and NAF, Official
Suppliers to the British Equestrian Team.

32-Year-Old
Half-Arabian Wins AHA High-Point Distance Award
Elmer
Bandit (DJS Jameel Junaid), a 32-year-old Half-Arabian,
was one of 16 Arabians, Half-Arabians and Anglo-Arabians
that won a 2002 Distance High-Point Award and blue
satin cooler from the Arabian Horse AssociationSM
(AHASM). Elmer, who is owned by Mary Anna Wood of
Independence, Missouri, was the highest scoring Half-Arabian
ridden by an AHA member in the North American Trail
Ride Conference (NATRC), one of the organizations
that governs competitive trail ride competition.
|
In
Elmer Bandit's illustrious career, he has earned 21 NATRC
championships and a Diamond Medallion for competing in more
than 15,000 competitive miles. In 2001 he was the nation's
second-placing horse in the NATRC open lightweight division,
and first place regionally. In 2002, Elmer was in fifth
place regionally.
Elmer's
career as a competitive trail horse has been as distinguished
as it has been long. As a "youngster" of 15, he
became the first of seven horses ever inducted into the
NATRC Hall of Fame. In 1980, he won the Bev Tibbitts Grand
Champion Award for having the highest average score in the
nation.
In
1998, Elmer won three rides, including two NATRC Sweepstakes
awards as the highest-scoring horse in the open division.
That October, in a 60-mile NATRC Ride, Elmer almost tied
with a horse 23 years his junior, missing his fourth perfect
score by a single point.
In
more than 27 years of competitive trail riding, Elmer has
developed a unique collection of skills. He pickets anywhere-on
the foot or on a line-and rolls and urinates on command.
An equine botanist, Elmer has perfected selective grazing
at the trot, Wood reports. He divides plants into three
categories-edible (raspberry and mulberry), inedible (sassafras)
and "will-do-in-a-pinch" (dogwood).

Reining
in success
If
you've been riding reining horses for awhile, and you've
had plenty of horse show experience, what are you going
to learn from a college online horse training course?
"You learn a lot, from basic techniques to some very
helpful advanced training methods," says Susan Dahl-Mitchell
of Burgessville, Ontario, Canada. "I really loved the
online availability of the material and the self-paced system."
The riding and showing of reining horses is nothing new
to Dahl-Mitchell; she's been doing it for nearly a decade.
To most of her friends, she is known as "ReinerSue."
Dahl-Mitchell recently completed Training Performance Horses
and received her "certificate of recognition"
from Allegany College of Maryland. The course is taught
by author/trainer Don Blazer and is offered online by four
colleges.

The
Training Tree: Balance
WAVERLY, WV--Balance is one of those terms in the horse
industry that is so misused that its become mythunderstood.
All it really means is that the horse is distributing
his weight equally on all four feet. We want him carrying
as much of his weight on the ride side of his body as
on the left side. We want him to carry as much weight
on his two front feet as he does on his two back feet.
|
That
seems pretty simple. But theres a catch. A horse
has this long neck with a big heavy head hanging out there
at the end of it which naturally has a tendency to shift
a little more of his weight onto his front feet. When
hes just hanging around being himself, a horse typically
carries about 60 percent of his weight on his front feet.
This
natural balance is going to vary quite a bit from horse
to horse. One young horse may look like hes carrying
about equal weight on all four feet when hes standing
there. You can look at another horse and it looks like
90 percent of her weight is on her front feet. As horses
grow and develop, their hind end grows first and pretty
soon theyre standing downhill. Then youve
got to wait for the front end to catch up. Some horses
never completely catch up and stay built downhill, or
what we call on their forehand, their whole lives. Because
one side of his body stronger or more dominant than the
other, a horse also tends to carry a little more weight
on one front foot than on the other. When youre
training a horse, its your job to get him carrying
his weight more or less equally on all four feet.
