Paint Horse Association (APHA) celebrated four decades of
achievement, membership in the organization reached an all-time
high of more than 104,000 members in 37 nations. The number
represents an 8 percent increase over the previous year's
membership total.
In addition, the total number of horses registered by the
association climbed to nearly 710,000, as APHA continues
to register American Paint Horses at a remarkable rate.
In 2002, APHA registered more than 60,000 American Paint
Horses-a nearly 6 percent increase over 2001's total.
"We
continue to see a membership that remains strong and committed
to a breed that has come a long way in a fairly short period
of time," said Jim Kelley, APHA executive secretary.
"In 2002, through the cooperative effort of APHA's
membership and staff, the American Paint Horse breed has
received the respect it deserves around the world.
"Through
their record numbers, our members have said loud and clear
that APHA is the association they want to be affiliated
with," Kelley continued, "and our registration

BEF
Invites Industry To Comment On Breeding Programme
3000
invitations have been sent out to Breed Societies
and Stud Books, individual breeders, trainers, elite
riders and other interested parties to an Open Meeting,
where the initial work of the BEF Breeding Development
Programme Plan will be presented and discussed.
|
Graham
Suggett, BEF Consultant Director of Breeding said; "Thanks
to the Breeding Development Programme Plan's seven working
groups' excellent preparatory progress we now have a good
basis for useful discussion and the BEF would like to widen
the debate and seek the views of breed societies, stud books
and ndividual breeders. Our committee and working groups
endeavour to represent the industry's views, but it is vital
that all our colleagues in the breeding community can participate
in this process. Our aim is to circulate information on
the BEF Breeding Programme as widely as possible amongst
the British Breeding Industry, and give everyone the opportunity
to participate in the plans if they wish."

An
Exciting New Novel To Be Released This Spring - Legend
of the Crown
The
novel is called "Legend of the Crown", and
for the few readers that have read it so far, reviews
indicate that this could become the next great novel
for fans of the genre.
Here is a short synopsis: Cassie Ferguson is a teenager
trying to cope with her life. Following her mother's
death in a tragic accident, she is forced to live with
her estranged father, Richard, at his horse farm in
Kentucky. Failing to come to terms with her loss, she
grows up nearly void of hope and refuses to trust anyone
but herself. After years of failed attempts to bond
with his daughter, Richard almost resigns to giving
up until the day a miracle occurs. A foal is born from
the very thoroughbred responsible for the death of Cassie's
mother. Cassie discovers the secret to this unique creature
that only she can see- a secret that changes her life
forever and helps forge a new bond with her father.
|
After raising her beloved companion, Cassie struggles against
others trying to take away her young filly for her gift
of speed to satisfy their own ambitions. In order to stay
together, Cassie leaves home with her filly to embark on
an adventure through the world of championship racing in
an attempt to win the Triple Crown series. Along the way,
she uncovers dark secrets from her past that threaten to
destroy her unfolding future.

Success
Is Easy
If you are a horseman involved with a breeding operation,
finding a few free minutes can be hard at this time of the
year.
But Leslie Mongeur of DeLand, Florida is finding the time
to attend school at Allegany College of Maryland. She's
taking the online course, Training Performance Horses. "Being
able to learn at my own pace was the key attraction when
I first read about the course," Mongeur said. "I
knew the season was coming and I wouldn't be able to take
all the lessons on a regimented schedule. But as soon as
the horses settle do for the evening, and I have the time,
I'll turn on the computer and I won't have missed a thing."
In addition to caring for nine horses, primarily Paso Finos,
and running a pet grooming shop, Mongeur is just as busy
as most horse owners. Time is precious. That's why nationally-know
author and trainer Don Blazer designed the internet course,
Training Performance Horses. Now students can get lessons
whenever they can find some free time. There is no time
limit for completing the course, but when it is finished
students receive a Certificate of Recognition.

Racehorse
Competition Launched For 2003
Entry
forms for the second year of the acclaimed "Racehorses
to Riding Horses" competition are now available.
The
competition, run by South Essex Insurance Brokers and QBE
International Insurance, is designed to prove that Thoroughbreds
coming out of training can be re-schooled for a career in
other disciplines. It will be supported this season by the
British Horseracing Board charity Rehabilitation of Racehorses
(RoR)
"The
first year of competition was an undoubted success,"
said South Essex's livestock and marketing manager Nicolina
MacKenzie. "We had many, many entries and the ultimate
winners last year have set a standard that proves that these
much maligned equine athletes can certainly do more than
just race - and in the right hands they can even be handled
by children."
"Racehorses
to Riding Horses" will be open to horses affiliated
to the British Show Jumping Association, British Dressage,
British Eventing and the British Endurance Society as well
as those contesting recognised showing classes or unaffiliated
competition run by The British Riding Clubs, Pony Club,
Permanent Show Organisers Association or approved centre.

An
Active Future For Older Horses
Trading
an old car in for a newer model is something all drivers
do at least once in their driving careers. It is a
fairly emotion-free activity involving little or no
thought for the car that has been discarded - unless
the owner in question is prone to anthropomorphism!
|
The
situation is very different for a horse. When older horses
are replaced by younger animals, they are often retired
while they are still fit and healthy. With retirement forced
upon them, their condition deteriorates, they become depressed
and they lose their zest for life - especially if they are
turned out all year round with no rugs or protection.
And
as some humans do not take to retirement, so it is with
some horses that miss the physical and psychological stimuli
of being active and working.
However,
hope and help is at hand thanks to the Veteran Horse Society
(VHS), founded just 18 months or so ago and which will be
bringing the story of its success to the Midlands Equine
Fair to be held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern,
on 8 and 9 March.

Open Their Hearts To Make-A-Wish Patient Laura Jahnke
Wellington,
Florida January 20, 2003 Laura Jahnke was
a fun-loving, 17-year-old girl with a passion for horses
and horse showing. In her spare time, Laura could be found
at the barn caring for her beloved mounts. That was until
last year, when Laura was diagnosed with bone cancer and
when her life changed forever.
Laura
has a wish, and thanks to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, that wish is about to be realized.
What is Lauras wish?: To meet her equestrian idols
at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida.
Before her diagnosis, Laura showed at local shows, but never
at A shows and never in Wellington. Her heroes
are the United States grand prix riders she watches
on ESPN.
After
Make-A-Wish let the equestrian community know of Lauras
wish, it was not long before more than 50 well-known riders,
trainers, owners, saddlery companies and others rallied
to provide funding, transportation, a horse, a stall on
the show grounds, riding lessons, tack, clothing and living
accommodations for Lauras trip to The 2003 Winter
Equestrian Festival.

Washing Leather-Trimmed Breeches
By Anna Carner Blangiforti, President and Founder, Leather
Therapy Products
OLDWICK, NJIn Victorian times, coachmen and grooms wore
buckskin or doeskin breeches that were kept white by the
application of pastes and chalks. When the whole thing just
got too messy, the thin leather was carefully hand washed.
Then the breeches were stretched back into shape to dry
on specially constructed breeches trees.
Caring for breeches didnt get much easier when someone
thought of stitching leather patches onto woolen breeches.
Now there were two different materials to keep clean, each
with its own persnickety care requirements. Modern leather
finishing processes and synthetic fabrics have made cleaning
breeches easier than it was in the old days.
But not by much.
Riders still grapple with the problem of how to launder
riding clothing constructed of materials with very different
cleaning requirements. The detergent products that do a
great job cleaning sweat and ground-in mud off fabric also
pull the lubricating oils out of leather, leaving it stiff
and uncomfortable when it dries. The inner fibers become
brittle and eventually break down. Suede, the leather of
choice for good saddle grip, has always been a challenge
to clean and condition because fat- or oil-based leather
conditioners stain it and mat its nap.
Given the cost of a pair of leather-seated breeches, riders
have cause to be concerned about finding cleaning methods
that extend the useful life of their garments. Thanks to
the synergy between two recently developed companion leather
care products, however, riders can now both clean and condition
leathers right in their washing machine. The cleaning solution
works during the wash cycle to deep clean grimy dirt and
leave leather fibers with a negative ionic charge that attracts
the more positively charged conditioning dressing during
the rinse cycle. The dressing lubricates and relaxes the
leather fibers. The procedure is not much different than
doing other laundry and the result is soft, supple, deep-cleaned
leather.

The
Dartmoor Pony.
The Dartmoor Pony is an attractive pony very much in
demand for its gentle nature as a child's first riding
mount. Dartmoor ponies have provided children and families
with wonderful experiences due to their versatility
and adaptability to riders of all ages. It is not unusual
for the same pony to patiently carry a toddler on lead
line, be used by an older child for 4H or Pony Club
and then happily work in harness taking the parents
for a Sunday drive. Below are some of the top reasons
Dartmoors are becoming increasingly more popular: |
1)
The pony averages around 12 hands thus making it easy for
a child to groom, saddle and mount themselves.
2) They move with a low, smooth stride making their riders
feel they are on a much larger mount.
3) They are not easily excitable like their cousins, easy
to train and posses a gentle & kind heart like the family
Labrador.
4) In the showring, the Dartmoor has competed with outstanding
success against other breeds in jumping, cross-country and
dressage proving that it is a breed to be reckoned with
in competition.
5) When used as a harness pony, they can hold their own
against much larger equines displaying toughness & courage
allied with their calmness.
Typically, once a Dartmoor Pony makes it into a family,
they are rarely sold. When the children outgrow them as
riding mounts, they go on as harness ponies or are passed
on to relatives to teach their young ones the love of riding
and caring for a pony.
