WORLD CHILDREN’S FINAL
The
2002 Final of the Children’s worldwide Jumping series took
place from 3 to 8 December, at the show grounds of the Brasilia’s
Equestrian Society.
Representing
Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand, France,
Russia, Belgium and Lithuania thirty-one riders aged 12 to 14
years participated. Twelve-year-old Maíra Machado Frota
Pinheiro from São Paulo (BRA) riding Astucia was declared
the winner of the Children’s World Final following an exciting
jump-off involving seven riders.
The
number of boys participating at the Final out-numbered the number
of girls by 11 boys. Eventually finishing 13th , the leader on
the World ranking list going into the Final was French rider Adam
Prudent.
Besides
very competitive competitions during the tournament, participants
had the opportunity to bond friendships with fellow competitors.
This was made possible by the Executive Body of the organising
committee arranging several parallel activities, which included
many social events, parties and tours of the city. Children were
introduced to Brazilian food, music, customs and traditions.
The
officials both Brazilian and foreign also had a tour of the city
which included a visit of the interior of Palácio da Alvorada,
the residence of the President of Federal Republic of Brazil.
They too enjoyed the excellent hospitality provided by the organising
committee.
The
entire Final aroused a great interest within the city and was
well attended by the public and widely covered by the press. The
principal newspapers and television networks covered the event
daily.

WORLD
CUP DRIVING DEBUT FOR GENEVA (SUI)
Switzerland’s
Geneva International Horse Show will host the FEI World Cup Driving
for the first time from 12 to 15 December 2002. The 42nd edition
of Switzerland¹s prominent horse show takes place in Europe’s
biggest indoor arena (51 x 98 meters). The course includes a water
splash and a small hill to guarantee spectacular moments for the
four-in-hand drivers and the crowd.
Dutch
driver Mark Weusthof will join Geneva by making his debut in the
World Cup Driving series. Reigning World Champion and his team
member in Jerez, IJsbrand Chardon, will accompany him. After his
disappointing results in the World Cup competition in Stockholm
two weeks ago (5th place), Chardon will use the borrowed Cob team
again in Geneva.
The
Dutch drivers will compete against USA’s Chester Weber and
Germany’s Rainer Duen, who are currently in fifth and sixth
position in the World Cup standings. They can expect strong competition
from home drivers Werner Ulrich, Daniel Würgler and Stefan
Kläy. Both Würgler and Kläy received a wild card
from the OC. Würgler qualified for the Indoor World Cup last
season and was very successful in Bordeaux (2nd place), Vigo-tryout
competition (2nd place) and Göteborg (2nd place). For Stefan
Klaÿ, the young driver from Zäziwil, it will be his
first World Cup experience.
The
warm up competition of the third leg of the World Cup takes place
on Friday 13 December at 22.20 hrs. The World Cup competition
is scheduled on Sunday 15 December at 12.00 hrs. As in Stuttgart,
the best three drivers will compete in a winning round after each
competition. Furthermore, the drivers will enter the arena on
Saturday evening at 22.45 hrs for a knock out competition. Two
competitors will drive two identical courses at the same time
and the driver with the fastest time and the least time faults
will win this extra competition, which does not count for the
World Cup.
The
World Cup Driving in Geneva will be broadcasted on Swiss Television
(DRS, TSI and TSR) on Sunday, 15 December after the FEI World
Cup Jumping.
Created
in 2001, the Driving World Cup has provided an innovative new
style of competition for indoor events, with courses combining
marathon and cone driving obstacles. The 2002/2003 season of the
World Cup includes nine events: Stuttgart (GER), Stockholm (SWE),
Geneva (SUI), Mechelen (BEL) in 2002; Leipzig (GER), Bordeaux
(FRA), Vigo (ESP), Œs-Hertogenbosch (NED) and Göteborg
(SWE) in 2003. The Top 5 Four-in-Hand drivers of the standings
after the first eight events will compete in the last event in
Göteborg from 27 to 30 March 2003.

WORLD CUP JUMPING
Two Beerbaum’s in the lead
The
FEI World Cup Jumping in the Western European League resumes this
week-end in Geneva. The World Cup Competition in the huge Palexpo
arena is scheduled for Sunday 15 December 2002 at 14:15.
Geneva
is the 6th of 14 World Cup competitions in Western Europe. After
the 5th competition in Berlin (GER) four weeks ago, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum
is in the lead with 45 points, ahead of her brother-in-law Ludger
Beerbaum (43 points), Jos Lansink (41 points), Thomas Velin (39
points) and Rodrigo Pessoa (38 points). Of those riders, Meredith
will be the only one not competing in Geneva, which means that
most likely there will be a new order in the standings next week.
NEW
MANAGER FOR THE FEI ENDURANCE DEPARTMENT
The
FEI is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Williams (GBR)
as future Manager of the FEI Endurance Department following the
promotion of Michael Stone to the position of FEI Sports Director.
Ian
has a wealth of experience in the Endurance Discipline and was
Chef d’Equipe of the British team that took the silver medal
at the FEI World Endurance Championships in 2000. He has also
been the High Performance Manager of British Dressage as well
as having a successful business career.
IN
MEMORIAM
Robert
C, Rost (USA), prominent jumping authority in the USA, passed
away last 28 November after a long illness. Rost dedicated himself
for nearly 40 years to horse show management, Rost ran the Washington
International Horse Show during its infancy.
He
was one of the first professional course designers in the Untied
States, designing courses at the National Horse Shows and other
large shows. In 1996, he received the US Equestrian (former AHSA)
Lifetime Achievement Award.
Gustav-Rolf
Pfordte, for 35 years Chef d’Equipe of German Nations Cup
Teams, died on 24 November 2002 in Essen, aged 88. Only a few
months ago, he had attended CHIO Aachen, alert as ever.
After
a successful career as Jumping rider, Gustav Pfordte became Chef
d’Equipe for the first time in 1954. Until 1988, he led the
German Nations Cup team in 141 CSIOs, at four Olympic Games, two
World and six European Championships.
