Comprehensive
program stresses education, experience
APHA uses
creative new approaches to strengthen horse judging program
|
FORT
WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) has
launched an innovative new program for people interested in
qualifying to become association-approved show ring judges.
The ambitious new approach to educating and qualifying future
APHA judges involves the "Apprentice Judge Program,"
an "Educational Judge Academy," and the development
of a "Judges' Video Library."
|
|
They are some of
the first steps in gaining acceptance to the Color Breed Council (CBC)
International Equine Judges' Seminar and Applicant School held early
each year in Oklahoma City, Okla. People who successfully master the
CBC four-day curriculum and achieve acceptable test scores are recognized
as official APHA judges.
"Our goal
is to ensure that future APHA judges have the resources they need
to become experts in the show ring," said Candy Cain, APHA director
of judges.

Chronicle
Of La Sierra Cavalcade
By
Paloma Palomino
I
decided to write this chronicle as a present to my friends,
Lucia and Pepe, so they could use it for their web page. Since
I'm a rather private and reserved person, this chronicle will
appear under the alias of Paloma Palomino, rather than my
own.
|
I have ridden horses
all my life, but always inside the arena. For years and years, Lucia
and Pepe had been inviting me to join them on one of the several horse
treks they make, but I had never accepted. Finally this last spring
of 2001, I joined a group of international riders that had also gone
to enjoy this "cavalcade", as my friends call their horseback-riding
vacation. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this "first
world" horse trek is run with "European accuracy" by two horse lovers
who really enjoy what they are doing, which is why they do it so well.
This chronicle
is a brief collection of my daily impressions, which I took to writing
each evening before going to sleep. Readers will find many of the
Spanish words used by the hosts to name local concepts. I hope these
paragraphs help foreign riders have a better idea of how great a vacation
one can spend in Mexico, especially when one is lucky enough to come
across such excellent horses and superb hosts.

2001 FEI World Challenge Supported by PSI
The 2001 FEI World Dressage Challenge supported by PSI is over. After
John Haig and
Samsung, the 2001 edition saw the arrival of our new sponsor, PSI
(Performance Sales
International). Although terrorist and military conflicts in some
part of the world
perturbed this edition - competitions cancelled, judges replaced at
the last minute;
postponement of Group IV (GRE; KAZ, UAE, IND, ISR) until spring 2002
- the Dressage
Challenge 2001 established a record of participation: 10 Groups and
676 riders.

Flaxseed as a Potential Treatment for Allergic Skin Disease in Horses
Recurrent Seasonal Pruritus ("Sweet Itch")
in horses is a common complaint with horse-owners, and may indeed
represent a significant cost to the equine industry. Approximately
20% of all Icelandic ponies exported from Iceland suffer from sweet
itch. The condition is caused by the serum of biting insects, specifically
the Culicoides or biting midge (also known as 'no-see-ums' and 'punkies').
These insects are not found on their native island so the horses have
built up no immunity to the serum. Sweet itch is not restricted to
Icelandics, and has been reported in many breeds around the world
since the summer of 1840. It is known as 'Queensland Itch' in Australia,
'Kasen' in Japan, 'Sommerekzem' in Germany, and the condition has
been reported in many other countries across the world. The condition
has affected many horses across several U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
Flaxseed is the highest vegetable source of omega-3 fatty acids, and
is fed routinely to affected horses by many stable managers. Although
research has been conducted, confirming the practice of feeding omega-3
fatty acids to dogs as an effective treatment for atopic skin disease,
limited data exist to validate this practice in horses. By demonstrating
the efficacy of flaxseed supplementation in reducing the intra-dermal
skin-test response of affected horses, new information will be made
available to horse-owners about a relatively inexpensive alternative
to standard corticosteroid therapy.

All of the horses
found in Iceland today are the descendants of horses taken there by
the Vikings. Space was precious on the longboats, so only the best
horses were selected. The ancestors of today´s Icelandic horses
came from Northern Scandinavia and the British Isles - in particular
the Dole Horse of Norway and from Britain the Celtic Pony, the ancestor
of the Exmoor and the Shetland.

Selecting
for the Best
©
Equine Management, Auction, and Appraisal Services, Inc
January
usually brings an influx of articles and advertisements for
the breeding season, trying to entice mare owners and future
buyers to look at their stock. Evaluating this onslaught of
information from handsome stallions to frolicking foals, can
be intimidating, but it is essential to realistically judge
the strengths and weaknesses of each individual. As horse
owners, and particularly as breeders our responsibility is
to maintain the quality of each breed by selecting for those
traits that bring the horse closest to the breed "ideal."

What Lies Beneath: A Commitment To Understanding The Horse's Hoof
Written by: Kelly
Counsell & Gayle Anderson
Professor Jeff Thomason of Biomedical Sciences at the University of
Guelph has a foot fetish. For horse's feet, that is. He would have
to be passionate to understand all there is to know about how horse's
feet work: how the laminae stretch and strain under enormous loading;
how the coffin bone and the hoof wall are married by these laminae
- until death do them part; and how human intervention from rider
to blacksmith affect this complicated structure. An engineering marvel,
really.
A horse's hoof is composed of the same protein as human fingernails,
but unlike fingernails, a hoof is designed to be the only interaction
between the foot and the ground. "Not many animals run on their
fingernails, and the ones that do have modified them extensively to
do that," explains Thomason.
Dr. Thomason
has dedicated much of the last ten years of his life to the study
of horse's feet. Now with the help of Heather McClinchey, resident
technician, the pair has developed a digital model of a horse's foot.
Based on data collected in the field, the model is programmed to respond
to the same kinds of force that the real foot experiences. As testing
and fine tuning continues, the model appears to be responding as would
a normal foot under the same conditions.

A
Horse, of Course with
Don Blazer
I'm
not much of a back country horseman.
There's not much back country in Scottsdale. (When I'm in
an arena with less than five other riders, I think I'm in
the wilderness.)
But if I was a back country horseman, I'd want to be a Back
Country Horseman.
A lot of horsemen do a lot of talkin' about what's wrong with
this and
what's wrong with that. A lot of horsemen do a lot of complain'
about all the open riding areas we are losing. Unfortunately,
most of the time
they're talkin' more than they're doin'.
|
|
But Back Country
Horsemen of America (BCH) are talkin' and doin', and I'm impressed
with both their talk and their walk.
