Dressage evening
For the first time in its 32-year history, Olympia International
Show Jumping Championships has added an extra night to the
show, on Wednesday 17th December. The organisers have created
an evening dedicated to Dressage to celebrate the sports

now enjoys.
Top of the bill will be the KUR (dressage to music) competition.
Olympia has invited six top international riders, including
our European Bronze medal winning team, to take part in
this highly skilled and breathtakingly spectacular event.
Raising
money to send the British team to the Olympics, the Olympia

Demystifying
Business Planning: Concept, Customer, Cash
By Lisa Derby Oden
I
hear it over and over - "I found an example of a business
plan, but it really has nothing to do with horses."
What is really needed here is a translation from business
speak into horse business speak. The underlying issues of
business planning are universal, just as the underlying
fundamentals of good horsemanship. Sometimes the uninitiated
believe that there is a business plan out there that has
already been written, that they can grab off the shelf and
run with. But there is no cookie-cutter approach to planning
your horse business. Your concept itself is very subjective,
and there are regional variations in costs and practices.
Your concept is your "baby." Be prepared to give
your baby the time and attention it deserves.

Live
exports - The British Horse Society demands retention
of 'minimum values' clause
The
British Horse Society (BHS) is demanding that the Government
gives assurance on the retention of the 'minimum values'
clause when equines are exported. Recent articles in
the equestrian press and other periodicals have given
rise to fears over the reinstatement of live animal
exports, leading to horror stories of cruelty for horses
and ponies being transported abroad for slaughter. |
Following
the European Commission's proposal, published on 16 July
this year, to update the current Animal Transport Directive,
The British Horse Society has been lobbying Defra hard to
ensure that the 'minimum values' clause will be retained
in Britain. The BHS has campaigned tirelessly, and fully
supports the ILPH campaign, for the enforcement and retention
of 'minimum values', whereby equines being exported must
be of a minimum value, thus helping to prevent the export
of horses and ponies for slaughter by rendering it uneconomic
to do so.

Basse Normandie Grand Prix : Beautiful harvest for the
"kiwi" Daniel Meech !
If
a forecast had had to be given this morning, no one
would not have bet on the victory of a New Zealander

young Daniel Meech who carries the trophy so much coveted,
in front of an original start list, where the favourites
had the hard life.
The
informed observers had perhaps noticed him at the time
of the CSI *** of Saint Lô last weekend. His good
performances were obviously not the fruit of the chance,
and Daniel Meech showed with best than it is always
necessary to believe in it.

Attack
On Two Veteran Horses
Two
veteran horses, situated in Powys, Wales have been the
victims of a vicious attack.
During the weekend the horses had their tails removed
by it appear shears. The horses were attacked during
daylight hours and the attack happened over a 2 day
period, in a total 3 horses have lost their tails.
Julianne Aston Founder of the organisation spoke of
the attack. 'This is a very cruel and pointless thing
to do to any animal. The horses were re-homed to their
new owners over 18 months ago and both have been looked
after beautifully. We can't imagine why someone would
do such a distressing act to both the horses or the
owners. It was obviously a planned attack. I would stress
all owners of horses to be extra vigilant until these
people are caught.'

Robert Smith scored an emphatic victory in the second
leg of the FEI World Cup series in Oslo, Norway today
but Holland's Eric Van der Vleuten, who finished fourth
with Audi's Jikke, further cemented his league-table
advantage.
Smith
had thrown down the gauntlet when topping Friday's
World Cup Preliminary competition and capitalised
on his last-to-go starting position today with a superb
jump-off round from the stallion Marius Claudius.
With
14 through to the timed round it was always going
to be a tough jump-off and the Yorkshireman was chasing
the target-time of 34.29 seconds set by Jos Lansink
and AK Caridor Z.
|
"There
were so many clears that it was very fast and I knew that
I must take a really difficult turn to the penultimate fence
which nobody else wanted to try if I was to be in with a
chance to win so I did it- and it worked!" Robert said
afterwards.
He
knew his horse had the speed - his victory in the World
Cup class at Olympia in London last December was secured
with a blistering performance - "he has plenty of speed
and he can take the pressure" Robert said.

The
Eriskay Pony
The Eriskay Pony is the last survivor of the native
ponies of the Western Isles of Scotland. Its origins
are ancient, certainly with Celtic and Norse connections.
Although numerous in previous centuries, numbers decreased
dramatically around the beginning of 19th century. Eventually,
only a handful remained on the small island of Eriskay,
which lies between South Uist and Barra in the Outer
Hebrides. The last survivors of this ancient breed have
become inextricably identified with this tiny island,
hence the name Eriskay Pony. |
On
Eriskay the crofters continued to use their ponies for the
traditional tasks of carrying peat and seaweed in panniers
slung in pairs across the ponies' blacks.
The ponies were handled mainly by women and children whilst
the menfolk were away at sea in their fishing boats.
Modern
Eriskay ponies are the last surviving remnants of the original
native ponies of the Western Isles of Scotland. Recent DNA
testing by the University of Leicester has proven that they
are a distinct, primitive breed, with ancient origins. Certainly
they have ancient Celtic and Norse connections and Eriskays
have been
proven by measurement to be of similar proportions to those
found on ancient Pictish stones throughout the North and
West of Scotland.

United
States Maintains Lead in Pan American Eventing Championship
at Fair Hill International
Fair
Hill, MDOctober 25, 2003The United States Equestrian
Team (USET) increased its lead in the Pan American Eventing
Championship at the 2003 Fair Hill International Festival
in the Country. World-class riders and drivers are competing
in a variety of equestrian events at the Fair Hill Natural
Resources Area in Fair Hill, MD, October 23-26.
The
U.S. turned in a perfect performance over the cross country
course to finish the second of the three phases with its
first-phase dressage score of 170.0 penalties. Canada, who
scored 186.2 in dressage, is second after cross country
with 301.0 and Brazil is third with a score of 1372.4.
Individually,
U.S. rider David OConnor of The Plains, VA, the 2000
Sydney Olympic individual Gold Medalist, leads with a two-phase
score of 51.6 on Courting Danger. Darren Chiacchia of Springville,
NY is second with 52.4 on Windfall 2, followed by Will Faudree
of Norwood, NC, who is third with 53.0 on Antigua.
No
eventing competition was held at the Pan American Games
in Santo Domingo earlier this year and the International
Equestrian Federation (FEI) decided to hold the Pan American
Eventing Championship in conjunction with the Fair Hill
International CCI***. In addition to the team and individual
medals, Olympic berths are also at stake for those countries
not yet qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens,
Greece.
