European
championships 2005: for the first time the Europeans will
take place in a community for drug addicts rehabilitation.
San
Patrignano (Rimini - Italy), the largest community for the
rehabilitation of drug addicts in Europe, will host the
2005 European Jumping Show Championships. The allocation
was officially announced yesterday in Moscow, during the
annual meeting of the FEI Executive Board, the main decisional
body of the International Equestrian Federation, chaired
by HRH Dona Pilar of Borbon.
At
the end of the meeting, HRH Dona Pilar of Borbon declared:
"I am pleased to announce that the Bureau today awarded
the 2005 European Jumping Championship to San Patrignano.
The FISE and the community have worked hand in hand with
all their energy to prepare San Patrignano's candidature
and I would like to underline the authentic commitment of
the rehabilitation community towards equestrian sport. The
entire Bureau is confident that San Patrignano's community,
in cooperation with the FISE, will host an unforgettable
championship thanks to their experience and a reputed organisation
team. I am sure that this championship will be inspiring
for the competitors and all of us thanks to the special
relationship between sport and solidarity which was developed
over the years by the well-known Italian community against
social outcast."
For
the first time in the sport's history, a drug rehabilitation
community will be the hosting venue of such a prestigious
event. The equestrian centre of San Patrignano - 110 x 60
mt. grass arena, 70 x 40 mt. warm up arena indoor, 75 x
50 mt. training area - will host the top European equestrian
jumping show from July 20th to July 25th, 2005.

Alternative
Dog Roly is really jumping for joy |
Manchester
United Kingdom 23rd October 2002
Roly
a Golden Labrador used to be fastest Postman catcher in
all of England until sadly he was struck down with arthritis.
From being the happiest dog in the world Roly had to be
content with watching his doggy mates' race around the fields
around his house. Inside he limped around with a very sad
look on his face. Roly's plight affected the Clarkson family
so much they sought ways to get Roly back on his feet, but
after numerous visits to the vet Roly's condition continued
to deteriorate.
In desperation Roly sent an email to alternative health
specialists 1stvitality.co.uk and much to his surprise received
an immediate reply from the company dogs Poppy and Muffet.
Muffet a 13 year old Yorkshire terrier, who like Roly used
to have a bad leg. Muffet had been taking Dr Tolonen's Nivelamin
Green Lipped Muscle extract to take the pain away and recommended
that Roly try some.
Roly
was sceptical, but he was so rough (sic) he decided to give
it a try.

Manufacturer Wins At 2002 National Recycling Awards
easibed
manufacturer G.I. Hadfield & Son Ltd, based in
Manchester, has won the much-coveted Best Reprocessing
Initiative award at the National Recycling Awards
2002 presentation ceremony at the Cardiff International
Arena this week.
easibed
dust free bedding was the idea of Hadfields Managing
Director Geoff Hadfield, who invested almost 3 years,
plus significant sums on plant and process development,
without any commitment to forward orders from potential
customers. Following launch into the UK equestrian
market rapidly became one of the leading bedding brands.
|
It
was this commitment to the initial development and trials
of this very successful product that has now been acclaimed
as a "significant step change permitting the use of
more of the UK wood waste stream for recycling", as
the process by which easibed is produced - all from recycled
whitewood has been judged the Best Reprocessing Initiative
of 2002.
This
year's National Recycling Awards attracted a record of more
than 200 entries and it is believed that this is the first
time a wood based initiative has won a major prize. It is
also believed that no previous winners have ever had any
connection with the equestrian industry.

Hurunui
Horse Treks received Qualmark approval
It's
not a brand you'll see on any horse's rump, but the
animals that power Hurunui Horse Treks will be carrying
their new Qualmark endorsement with pride.
The North Canterbury-based business is the first multi-day
trek operator to earn Qualmark-endorsed "Visitor
Activity" status.
"The endorsement shows our commitment to the
safety of our clients and guides, welfare of our animals,
and consistent delivery of a quality experience,"
says owner Rob Stanley.
|
The
Qualmark assessment programme is the result of years of
work and co-operation between adventure operators, the Adventure
Tourism Council, the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association,
the Aviation Tourism and Travel Training Organisation, the
New Zealand Qualifications Authority, and Qualmark. "We
are proud to be one of the first adventure operators to
have passed through this process," Mr Stanley says.
Hurunui
Horse Treks was one of the businesses involved in the development
of the Qualmark programme for adventure operators.

National
Spanish Horse Association goes online
The
national governing body for Spanish and Baroque horse
breeds - including the purebred Spanish horse, the Lippizaner,
the Friesian, and the Lusitano - is online. The National
Spanish Horse Association (NSHA), at www.spanishhorses.co.nz,
is New Zealand's one-stop shop for information about
Spanish and Baroque horses. "We're a relatively
new organisation, but decided the time was right to
go online," says president Bev Falconer, of Te
Awamutu. |
"There
is much confusion about spanish breeds in general and with
our site we're able to better inform the public about Spanish
and Baroque breeds and their origins," she says. "It's
also giving breeders and stud owners an avenue to promote
their horses."
As well as in-depth articles on the Spanish and Baroque
breeds, NSHA breeders can have their own pages or site featured
in the Studs and Stallions section. There's also a Horses
For Sale area, and a forms and resources area, where visitors
can download forms for registration, change of ownership,
membership, and stud returns. The new NSHA site was designed
by equine web design specialists Horsetalk, and is also
hosted under Horsetalk.

Sentencing
of 75 Year Old Horse Abuser Deferred until 12 December
Today,
Tuesday 5 November, Ellen Mary Jones (75) was before
Reigate Magistrates Court, Surrey, for sentencing.
On September 13 at the same court, she was found guilty
of causing unnecessary suffering to a filly known
as Flannel Foot's Daughter; of breaching a 1994 Court
Order banning her from keeping animals for 20 years
and a 1995 Court Order banning her from keeping horses
for life.
|
Says Ted Barnes, Field Officer for the ILPH (International
League for the Protection of Horses), "Despite the
2 Court Orders Jones (Nellie) has continued to breed and
keep ponies on her property, stating that they were being
looked after by a third party.
"Since 27th July 2000 I have visited Nellie's property
35 times to check on the welfare of those ponies which were
giving us cause for concern. Since that time she has signed
over to the ILPH 12 ponies which were particularly neglected,
of which 6 were put down on veterinary advice due to their
severe state of malnutrition or neglect."

"Growing"
Green Fuel Could Bring Thousands More Jobs - NFU
At
least 10,000 new jobs would be created in the UK countryside
in the next two years if the fledgling "green fuel"
industry gets off the ground, according to the NFU.Growing
wheat, sugar and rape to turn into "bio-fuels"
to power the country's vehicles could help to offset many
of the 60,000 job losses in the farming industry in recent
years, the NFU believes.
But
the much-needed boost to the rural economy depends on the
Government providing the tax relief necessary to encourage
the investment required to develop the emerging industry
to its full potential.
The thousands of rural jobs would be created in crop production,
the construction of new plant and machinery, and the operation
of processing facilities for the new fuel with the potential
for many more in future years. To make bio-fuels more competitive
at filling stations, NFU Alternative Crop Uses Chairman
Rad Thomas has been lobbying for 30p per litre tax relief
on all liquid bio-fuels in next month's pre-Budget statement
instead of the current 20ppl, which is not even available
for all bio-fuels. In
other EU countries such as Germany and France, the state
levies little or no duty on bio-fuels.

Galway
Downs Eventing Final Results
If the Galway Downs Three Day Event had been a horse
race, the track announcer would have said, "And
the winner in our CCI**, who led wire to wire, is Debbie
Rosen and Gringosch!" Rosen only added four penalties
to her dressage score of 51.60 when the pair lowered
a single rail in the stadium jumping phase. "This
is our first two star win, and we was very exuberant
in the jog this morning. He was feeling great!"
said Rosen of her win |
Rosen
plans to do an Advanced event in March in order to aim for
a CCI*** in the fall. Rosen credits Brian Sabo for his help
throughout her eventing career. When Sabo can not attend
a show, she gets coached by Gina Economou. Rosen spotted
Gringosch on a video, but when she contacted the owner in
order to buy the horse, the owner insisted Rosen come to
Germany to make sure the horse was a suitable match. Rosen
keeps in touch with the owner and could not wait to call
with her exciting news.
In
the competition for the Fritz Cup by the Young Riders (ages
16-21) in the CCI**, Lauren Whitlock had a two point lead
after the cross country phase. However, two rails in the
stadium jumping opened the door for India McEvoy who jumped
right through. Even though McEvoy dropped a rail with Seamus,
they hung on for the win. "He is kind of deceiving
in his looks," said McEvoy of her 14 year old Thoroughbred.
"He is not the kind of horse that looks like he can
do it all. He is long backed, but he has the biggest heart
and will always try to do his best." Eighth in last
year's CCI* at Galway, McEvoy really likes competing at
the facility.

With Bo Jenå
December 7,8 2002
Los
Alamos Dressage Center is pleased to announce that it will
sponsor an unusual educational and "hands on"
Seminar and Dressage Clinic with Mr. Bo Jenå of Sweden
on December 7,8 2002 at Los Alamos Dressage Center, Freehold,
NJ.
Mr.
Jenå is a world renowned expert on training horses
from the ground using Long Reining techniques as well as
training and showing sport horses "In-Hand". In
addition, he is a Grand Prix Dressage trainer, competitor
and judge. Mr. Jenå has worked at Flyinge, the National
Stud of Sweden, for the past 30 years, where he has directed
the dressage program and has trained and shown numerous
stallions in long reins as well as under saddle up through
Grand Prix dressage. He has also presented stallions in
hand at inspections all around Scandinavia. If you have
ever attended the stallion show at Flyinge, you might have
seen Mr. Jenå riding one horse while driving another
or showing movements of Grand Prix dressage with horses
in long reins or even running with horses that seemed to
defy gravity while trotting in-hand. Currently on a sabbatical
leave from Flyinge, he is staying in the USA and could be
seen standing and running many horses at "Dressage

The
119th National Horse Show
Wellington,
Florida---November 4, 2002---The 119th National Horse Show
will take place at The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in
Wellington, Florida from November 26, 2002 through December
1, 2002. Considered the most prestigious horse show in the
U. S., this is the first time in its century-old history
that it will be held outside of the New York metropolitan
area and, more importantly, in an outdoor venue.
The
National was founded in 1883 by an august group of East
Coast businessmen and sportsmen with names such as Vanderbilt
and Morgan. Its directors and members formed the basis for
Louis Kellers first Social Register of 1887, and the
competition became the unofficial opening of the New York
social season.
From
1883 through 2001, The National was held at Madison Square
Garden in New York City, with the exception of the years
1989 through 1995 when it went to The Meadowlands in New
Jersey. Thus, The National has always been considered the
first and finest indoor horse show in the U.
S., given the indoor arenas at those locations. Due to the
inability to secure a long-term contract with the Garden
this year, The Nationals Board decided to break with
tradition by moving the 2002 show to Wellington and its
outdoor rings.

Galway
Downs Horse Trials Final Results |
Galway
Downs also hosted several Horse Trials divisions in conjunction
with its CCI* and CCI** Three Day Event. In the Training
Horse Division, Bea diGrazia finished with her dressage
score of 28.50 aboard Pavoratti. Time proved to be a significant
factor when only four of the seventeen entries made it around
the cross country course with no time penalties. Seven horses,
including diGrazia's made it around the stadium course with
no rails or stops. Second was Samantha Wagner and Irish
Blue with a final score of 40.50.
At
the end of the Junior Training Division Amanda Volk and
Tory Smith were tied for first with 31.50 points. However,
Volk was closest to the optimum time in the cross country
phase so she led the victory gallop. Volk piloted Lord Spencer
to the win. Smith rode Respected Glory. Third by only 1.5
points was Adrienne Hillas on Turbonium. Sixteen junior
riders competed and they all finished.

The
Training Tree: Freedom Of Gaits
WAVERLY, WV--When we first start working with a green
horse, we get his trust by working with him in a relaxed
and rhythmic way whether were catching him,
grooming him, or doing some groundwork with him in
some kind of pen. You want the horse to be comfortable
with your presence and with the general pattern of
what youre going to do today, based on what
you did with him the day before and the day before
that and the day before that.
|
When its time to ride the horse, you introduce him
to the saddle and the blanket and the bridle in the same
relaxed and rhythmic way, breaking everything down into
the smallest possible bites you can think of. The same goes
with introducing the riders weight. Now youve
got the horse accepting the bridle and the blanket and the
saddle and the rider mounting and the two of you are just
standing there in the arena waiting for the next thing to
happen. Maybe youre scratching him and patting him
to keep his attention. At some point, the feelings
going to change for him and the horse is going to offer
to move a step. Your job is to allow the horse to move however
he wants and to just follow whatever he does.
You allow his freedom of gait.
Freedom of gait means the horse can reach forward with his
hips and shoulders without meeting any resistance. That
means the riders not bumping him in the mouth or pulling
on the reins or shifting her weight. Basically, the rider
doesnt interfere with horses natural movement.

remained in the top spot. Debbie Rosen and Gringosch are
making their first CCI** outing memorable. "This is
the best round I have ever had on him," commented Rosen
of her 17 hand gelding. "He has a really big stride
so I worked on control issues prior to the event. We practiced
a lot of narrow (jumps)," commented Rosen emphasizing
the "lot."
Rosen
has a 5.6 point lead over second place rider Lauren Whitlock
and Kipling. Whitlock, in moving up to second, assumes the
lead in the Young Rider category for the prestigious Fritz
Cup. Jolie Sexson led the contest for the Fritz Cup after
dressage, but a withdrawal in the cross country phase halted
her bid for this important honor sought by young riders
between the ages of 16 and 21.
Barbara
Crabo maintained her lead in the CCI* with Groovy. Because
of the pair's strong dressage score of 42.4, over six points
ahead of the second place pair, Crabo could afford the two
time penalties she accrued with her cautious ride around
the cross country course.

Galway
Event - Dressage Day |
The
Galway Downs Three Day Event got underway today with the
dressage phase. Debbie Rosen took the lead in the CCI**
aboard Gringosch with total penalties of 51.6. She imported
the German-bred gelding two years ago. A year ago at Galway
the pair finished sixth in the CCI*. Of her dressage test
today Rosen commented, "This was his best dressage
test ever." Rosen is pleased with her positive start
as this is Gringosch's first CCI**.
Jolie
Sexton assumed the second place spot, but as a young rider,
she leads for the Fritz Cup championship as well. With her
Belmont Ballywagon the pair earned a very close 53.0 score
behind Rosen.
In
the CCI*, Barbara Crabo rode her Groovy to the lead with
a score of 42.4. Although Crabo says the six year old gelding
has been very solid in dressage in his three years of eventing,
she did not expect him to perform such a solid test today.
"This is his first three day event and he was a bit
better than I expected."

Kernan's
rivals out of touch in grand prix
James
Kernan, riding Out of Touch, won the Dairygold Indoor
Grand Prix at Millstreet, Co Cork, today (Sunday, November
3).
The Crossmaglen, Co Armagh rider was one of four to
make the jump-off. Second to go, he jumped clear in
34.34 seconds, which proved too fast for Army riders
Lt David O'Brien riding Killossery Kruissette and Capt
Gerry Flynn aboard Bornacoola. O'Brien finished second
with a clear in 36.34secs, while Flynn was third with
a clear in 37.66secs. Waterford's Francis Connors, who
was runner up last year, was first into the arena and
four faulted at the wall to finish in fourth place.

The
Highland Pony.
The Highland is the largest of the three Scottish
native breeds of pony, reaching a maximum of 14.2hh
(148cms) and a modern adult pony can weigh as much
as 55kg. Its original environment of the Scottish
Highlands and Islands, to which it is well adapted,
has made it a hardy, sure-footed animal. The island
ponies, because of their harsher environment tended
to be smaller and lighter boned than their mainland
relations. Its winter coat is thick and insulating
and enables it to live outside in all weathers. It
has a profuse, silky mane and tail and feathering
on the legs. The summer coat is smooth.
|
Its
strength, sure-footedness and equable temperament made it
an invaluable workhorse for the crofters of Scotland who
used the Highland as a multi-purpose animal - for ploughing,
forestry, riding and haulage. The sporting estates found
the Highland useful for bringing deer and game from the
hill and many modern day estates have reverted to the ponies
as being more environmentally friendly than 4x4 vehicles.
In the First World War, the Lovat Scouts used Highlands
as army mounts and they were also used by the military in
the Boer War. With the advent of pony trekking in Scotland
in 1955, the Highland came into its own and the breed became
more widely known. Nowadays, the Highland makes an excellent
family pony, as it is a good all-rounder and will turn a
hoof to riding, driving, dressage, jumping, cross country
and long distance riding as well as being extensively used
for RDA (Riding for the Disabled) work. Highlands are able
to carry an adult of up to 15 stones in weight. In the Mountain
and Moorland Ridden Pony of the Year at Olympia,Highlands
were champion and reserve in 1999.

Grand
Prix to bring Dairygold Indoor Show Jumping to exciting
climax
(Note change in starting time)
The Dairygold Indoor Show at Millstreet, Co Cork, reaches
its apex this evening with the staging of the 10,000
euro Dairygold Grand Prix. With more than 50 of Ireland's
top riders in action, it promises to be an exciting
climax to four days of top-class show jumping at the
Green Glens Complex.
All eyes will be focused on Clement McMahon, the Clones
man who rode Gelvin Clover to victory in last night's
(Saturday, Nov 2) Dairygold Indoor Derby. |
However,
runner-up Waterford's Francis Connors on Cruiseway, will
be bidding to go one further this afternoon and top the
leaderboard.
Local star Robert Splaine is another who cannot be dismissed.
The Belgooly rider showed his prowess to take yesterday's
BDO Simpson Xavier Speed Derby on Springfield Ohio, with
Francis Connors again the bridesmaid on Millstreet Miss,
owned by Green Glens proprietor Noel C Duggan.
Today's grand prix is scheduled to start at approximately
4pm (not 5.30pm as previously stated), with the prizegiving
at 7pm.

A
Horse, Of Course
by Don Blazer
Walter, a horse, of course, wants to pull Santa's sleigh.
"Don't be silly," I said. "Reindeer pull
Santa's sleigh."
"That's what they'd like you to believe,"
he said with a sinister grin.
"Well, that's what I do believe," I replied
emphatically.
"That's because you're so gullible," he said,
walking to the back of his stall and turning his tail
to me. |
"Haven't
you heard of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer?" I asked,
beginning to feel I was on shaky ground.
He looked at me as if I was the only one in the world who
didn't know the truth. "The whole charade is based
on rhyme," he said as a first attempt to enlighten
me.
"What do you mean?" Asking was my big mistake.
Santa started with a horse, has always had a horse, and
will always have a horse, Walter began.
According to Walter, the first horse used by Santa Claus
was a Friesian of the Netherlands. He came to that conclusion
because Santa Claus is really Saint Nicholas, bishop of
Myra, whose feast day, December 6, is a holiday for Dutch
children. Saint Nicholas drove a sleigh pulled by a Friesian.
