horse British Equine Event Round-Up!

Leisure riders, professionals and many more enjoyed the two-day equestrian extravaganza at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, November 2-3, benefiting from the series of displays, demonstrations, lectures and seminars given by Europe's leading equestrian manufacturers, competitors and celebrities.

An attendance of 15,600, the event's third highest figure ever, saw exhibitors doing brisk business. David Storrar, Director of Exhibitions at the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) said, "There was a very positive response to this year's event proving yet again that the event is an outstanding success, attracting support from all equestrian spheres. We are delighted so many renowned equestrian personalities joined us, and we are riding away from this event with more ideas to build on for next year."

Reaseheath College, Cheshire, won this year's Best college stand trophy and £200 for their student fund. Stand judge Rhiannon Davies from RASE commented, "The stand's highly relevant road safety content, presentation and staffing ensured that many visitors were drawn to the exhibit. This was credit to the college's students who designed, constructed and staffed the stand throughout the weekend." Writtle College of Chelmsford came a close second.

The BETA sponsored Best trade stand awards went to saddle manufacturers Thorowgood Limited in the eighteen square metre and under class and Hilton Herbs for the best stand over eighteen metres.

Andrea Oakes, marketing manager at Thorowgood said, "The British Equine Event was a great success for Thorowgood. We were delighted with the number and quality of visitors both days and were overwhelmed by the interest they showed in our products - especially our new fit saddles."

Receiving a crystal vase award for the third time, Hilton Herbs managing director Tony Self said, "Hilton Herbs tries hard every year to create an appealing and welcoming stand for the public - it encourages other stands to make the effort and improve the visitors' shopping experience."

A clear and informative presentation produced by the Haflinger Society of Great Britain won the Best breed stand award. Chairperson Lesley Brown commented "We are a small society, but we've a team of committed volunteers whose efforts were rewarded by the judges at this year's event. We're really pleased with the result and will be back at the British Equine Event next year!"

The Eqvalan Thesis of the Year Award was won for the second year in a row by a student from Hartpury college, Gloucestershire. Lynne Uttley, originally from Sheffield, presented her thesis entitled "A study to determine whether the use of electrical grinding equipment on equine cheek teeth can initiate a rise in temperature sufficient to cause thermal damage" to a panel of three judges from across the equine industry. She beat off stiff competition from four other finalists including the runner-up Irishman Jack Murphy from the University of Limerick. Lynne, now continuing her studies at Masters level at Hartpury, won a silver plate, £500 and the chance to address the National Equine Forum in March next year.
