ILPH Promotes Farriery Best Practice
ILPH Glenda Spooner Farm, Hoarwithy, near Hereford

The first Glenda Spooner Farm Farriery Competition held on Saturday 27 July attracted more than 20 competitors.

With that many entries competition was stiff and Judge for the day, Mr Mark Evans, Dip WCF, had a difficult job on his hands choosing the winners.

Ben Benson won the first class of the day, the Apprentice Shoe Making Class. He has had a spectacular year that has included winning the Royal Show National Champion Apprentice title. The Runner-up was Clayton Lowe from the Welsh Borders.

The Live Shoeing class was of a similarly high standard. Competitors had 60 minutes in which to fit two shoes (one front and one hind) onto impeccably behaved ILPH horses. The eventual winner was British Team Member Dave Smith from the Cotswolds. Elgin Harris from South Wales was Runner-up.

The prize for the Best Dressed Foot was awarded to Nick Sumner who lectures at the Hereford Farriery School.

The competition was organised by the Glenda Spooner Farm Farrier, Rodway Heathfield with help from his wife, Sarah, who kindly agreed to take on the role of
entry secretary. Rodway, a member of the Hereford Farriers Club, was delighted with how the day went. "I think the day was a great success for all concerned. Our intention was to encourage as many farriers and apprentices as possible to come along, have a go, and enjoy the day. Not only did we succeed in this regard, we also had a very high standard of competition in both classes. I was especially pleased to see a high number of entries from fellow members of the Hereford Farriers Club," he says.

Chief Steward was Mr Ron Gwilliam RSS and ILPH Vice-President, Mrs. Vivien McIrvine, kindly presented the prizes.

The ILPH would also like to acknowledge the generosity of their sponsors, without whom the competition would not have been possible.Three Counties Equine Hospital (Kearns and Rea) for the prize money, Mr C Swann for providing the gas forges, Breakaway Horseshoes, Handmade Shoes UK, Mr Jim Blurton and Mr B Webber for the steel for the shoes.

It is hoped that another Farriery Competition will be held at ILPH Glenda Spooner Farm next year.

ILPH Belwade Farm, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire

The 4th ILPH Belwade Farm shoe making competition took place on their annual Open Day on Sunday 21st July.

All classes were well supported by farriers from all over Scotland. The Judge Jim Balfour AWCF, had his hands full sorting out the placings.

Senior Class for qualified farriers involved making a graduated front shoe and a wide web front shoe. Winner and the 'Woodside Vet Group Trophy' went to Stewart
Armstrong from Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire.

The Junior Class for apprentices involved making a plain stamp front and concave front shoe. The winner was Alex Sharman from Dundee.

Senior Eagle Eye Class, which involved making up a concave straight bar shoe, went to Donald Nicol from Aberdeen. The Junior Eagle Eye Class, which involved making up a concave front shoe went to Alex Sharman from Dundee who received the Shehallien Trophy for his efforts.

In 2003 the competition will be run over two days at the Echt Show, Aberdeenshire, in July when Senior and Junior overall Trophies will be awarded as well.
