Cup Dressage
A World Cup Dressage Qualifier will be held in Maastricht (NED)
from 6 to 8 December 2002. This is an addition to the Official
FEI Calendar already published.

2003
World Pairs Driving Championship
Please take note of the change of location of the 2003 World Pairs
Driving Championship. It will take place from 18 to 21 September
in the Haras de Jardy, one of France’s top equestrian centres.

In Memoriam
Fritz Jirisch (AUT) passed away on 18 July 2002 only days before
his hundredth birthday. Born on 26 July 1902 in Silesia, the son
of a general in the imperial Austrian army, Jirisch was destined
to follow the long military tradition of his family. After graduating
from cadet school, he attended, among others, the Spanish Riding
School of Vienna, the Cadre Noir in Saumur and the German Cavalry
School in Hanover. In the mid-1930’s he was a member of the
Austrian Jumping team.
After the war, Jirisch became an FEI judge, very much in demand.
He attended many FEI General Assemblies and was made in 1972 an
FEI Honorary Delegate. He is survived by his wife Trudl whom he
had married in 1939.
Morton
“Cappy” Smith (USA), one of the great American civilian
Jumping riders and teachers, passed away on 17 July 2002. Starting
in the 1930’s through to the 50’s, Cappy Smith was an
outstanding competitor who dominated the National Horse Show winning
the title on several occasions. Among the riders influenced by
Cappy Smith is William Steinkraus, the first American to become
individual Olympic champion in equestrian sports.
The
sports marketing pioneer Cesar W. Lüthi (SUI) passed away
on 18 July 2002 aged 72. He became the best known in equestrian
circles as the generous sponsor of the Bulgarian Jumping team
and the highly appreciated CSI in Aach (GER).
Mr Lüthi was born and lived in Switzerland. He bought his
fist advertising rights to a major sporting event in 1966. In
1972, he founded the CWC sports marketing company which he sold
in 2000. In 1996, he opened the Hirtenhof Equestrian Centre in
Aach where the first CSI was held in 2000.
Antonio
Opper (ITA), member of the Italian bronze medal winning Jumping
team at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome died recently. From 1959
to 1966, he represented Italy in several Nations Cups.
