IRELAND - TWO NATIONS CUP VICTORIES IN ONE DAY

After winning the European Senior Show Jumping Championship Gold Medal just two weeks ago, Irish tails were up today (July 13) as senior teams crashed through strong international fields to win two Nations Cup victories in the same day - one in Falsterbo, Sweden, and one in Lummen, Belgium.

This mirrored exactly the double win in 2000, when two senior Irish teams did exactly the same thing at Falsterbo and Lummen, also in July. Only Cian O'Connor, Robert Splaine , Capt. Gerry Flynn and Dermott Lennon, however, have now jumped in both double victories - 2000 and 2001.

Ireland ranked Eighth in the Samsung Nations Cup leaderboard before today's double win, but the scoring system is sufficiently complicated to prevent an immediate assessment of Ireland's current place. Certainly, Ireland's work will be cut out to repeat the Nations Cup Series overall win of 99/2000 with the competitions left in the 2000/2001 series.

However, Irish show jumpers confounded the experts by winning the European Championships last month - so anything is possible.
