horse Hi Fibre cubes show the way

A versatile cube that can replace forage or grass, weight for weight, provide slow release stamina energy, is low in starch, offers good levels of minerals and vitamins, and is highly palatable - that's Hickstead Horse Feeds' brand new Hi Fibre Cubes.

"These cubes are the best way to feed your horse everything he needs," says Christine Smy MSc, consultant with the feed company. "The fibre content is 19 per cent, making it an ideal feed for horses and ponies in light work, or those needing a maintenance ration."

Hi Fibre cubes are also an ideal way to provide a balanced diet for horses or ponies out at grass, likely to put on weight, and therefore top candidates for suffering from laminitis, a condition often triggered by diets high in soluble carbohydrates, such as mixes filled with cereal starch.

"High starch feeds provide instant energy and can send the horse 'over the top'," says Christine. "This can be off-putting for novice riders who have been over-horsed. These Hi Fibre Cubes offer a lower calorie feed that will produce a slow release, stamina energy."

"They can also be fed as a total feed, replacing forage weight for weight, and the inclusion of high digestible fibre, in the form of soya hulls and sugar beet pulp, provides slow release stamina energy."

And the company has a special tip for the older horse, especially those suffering from bad teeth or digestive problems… soak the Hi Fibre Cubes with warm water, or soaked sugar beet pulp, for about 20 minutes, and you have a palatable mash that's easily digested and absorbed.
