William
Fox-Pitt of Great Britain Overtakes the Lead at 2002
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented By Bayer,
April 25 - 28
|
Lexington,
KY-April 26, 2002-In front of a crowd of 14,110, the leaderboard
changed dramatically following the completion of dressage
at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bayer,
held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, April 25-28,
2002.
With 36.20 penalty points, William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain
overtook the lead from countryman Ian Stark, whose score
of 44.40 with Jaybee dropped him to eighth position following
the completion of the first phase of dressage. "Today
he tried very hard," praised Fox-Pitt, 33, of his equine
partner, the Irish-bred Springleaze Macaroo. "He's
actually got a good change in him when he's relaxed."
Darren Chiacchia, 37, of Ocala, FL, moved into second position
with 36.80 penalty points riding R.G.'s Renegade, a 12-year-old
Thoroughbred/Selle
Francais gelding owned by Colleen Hofstetter of Mars, PA.
Exemplifying the international flavor of the Rolex Kentucky
Three-Day Event, Olivia Bunn, 23, who traveled from Australia
to compete at this year's event for the first time, holds
down third position with GV Top of the Line on a score of
37.40.
"I decided to come here instead of Badminton because
I had heard how beautiful it is here," Bunn said. "I'm
very glad I did." Kim Vinoski, 28, of Scottsville,
VA, is currently in fourth position with 38.00 penalty points
earned with Royal Venture and also holds down tenth place
with Winsome Adante.
The largest four-star field in Rolex Three-Day Event history,
63 horses will compete in Saturday's challenging phase of
cross-country, beginning at 8:30. Competition concludes
on Sunday with stadium jumping. The Rolex Kentucky Three-Day
Event serves as the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Four-Star
Championship and is a selection trial for this year's Eventing
World Championships to be held at the World Equestrian Games
in Jerez, Spain in September.

Dengie
Support The Brooke Hospital For Animals
Dengie
Horse Feeds are delighted to announce that their International
Charity for 2002's show season is The Brooke Hospital
For Animals.
The
Brooke Hospital , founded in 1934 with headquarters
in London, provides free veterinary treatment for
the working horses, donkeys and mules of poor people
in Egypt, Jordan, India and Pakistan. Many owners
live in such poverty they do not have the means, and
certainly not the knowledge, to properly care for
their animals, which results in needless suffering.
By collaborating with the local people, and helping
them improve their animal's health and their own husbandry
skills the Brooke is already transforming the lives
of hundreds of thousands of working animals.
|
Dengie
will be raising money by selling feed samples at shows,
open days and promotions. Collecting tins will available
for the public to make donations. Dengie will make a presentation
to Brooke Hospital at The British Equine Event later this
year.

Veteran
cutter wins two of last three NCHA Super Stakes on
a Paint
American
Paint Horse world fired up over JR Red Diablo's NCHA
Super Stakes win
|
FORT
WORTH, Texas-Veteran cutter Chubby Turner gave competitors
and a bunch of cattle the devil when he rode a hot American
Paint Horse named JR Red Diablo to victory in the 2002 Flowmaster/National
Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes, held April
21 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
The
red roan tobiano Paint stallion proved to be a deserving
champion, earning $80,794 in tough open competition that
featured 272 world-class 4-year-old cutting horses.
This
is the second time in the past three years that Turner,
54, has ridden an American Paint Horse to victory in the
prestigious NCHA Super Stakes open competition. In 2000,
the Weatherford, Texas, resident earned a championship with
a Paint Horse named JR Colord Prom.
"Paints
have always been good for me," said Turner, who has trained
cutting horses for 38 years and is a member of the NCHA
Riders Hall of Fame.
Throughout
the years, Turner said he has often taken a good-natured
ribbing from some of his fellow trainers who have been reluctant
to ride Paints in the performance arena.
"That's
O.K.," said Turner. "I just tell them, 'If you boys don't
want to ride 'em, I will, and I'll beat you with 'em.'
"I
like Paints, and I really believe the American Paint Horse
Association (APHA) is working harder to improve its breed
than any other organization. The American Paint Horse is
well bred."
As
for JR Red Diablo in particular, Turner said he couldn't
have asked for a better horse to ride. "He's got a real
pretty way of stopping," said Turner. "He's so smooth that
it doesn't even feel like he's stopping. It wasn't until
I watched a tape of him that I realized he really was such
a big stopper. We worked hard every day and I couldn't have
asked for a horse to be any better than he was. He was great."

Great
Britain's Ian Stark Steals Early Lead at 2002 Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented By Bayer, April
25 - 28
|
Lexington,
KY-April 24, 2002-Ian Stark of Great Britain is in the early
lead following Thursday's opening phase of dressage at the
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bayer, held
at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, April 25-28, 2002.
With a score of 44.40 penalty points, Stark, only the sixth
rider into the ring, topped the leader board with the 12-year-old
Jaybee, a New Zealand-bred thoroughbred gelding.
"This is Jaybee's first three-day event run since he
fell in the water at Sydney," said Stark, 47, referring
to his bad luck at the 2000 Olympic Games. "The new
dressage test is asking a lot more of the horses in terms
of their training, but Jaybee is very adaptable."
American Kim Vinoski is in the hunt for her first Rolex
win, having placed fourth in 2000. With Winsome Adante,
the 28-year-old rider from Scottsville, VA, finished her
opening phase of dressage with 48.20 penalty points.
William Fox-Pitt, 33, also traveling from England to contest
the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, earned a score of 48.20
penalty points aboard Stunning, a 16-year-old veteran who
carried Fox-Pitt to a team gold medal at the 2001 European
Eventing Championships.
Although currently in fourth position with a score of 49.61,
Olympic Champion David O'Connor, 40, of The Plains, VA,
will be looking to defend his title with Tigger Too, an
11-year-old American thoroughbred gelding.

Best To Star At Horse Of The Year Show
Organisers
Grandstand Media announced today that Jean Francois
Pignon is to be the headline display at this year's
Horse of the Year Show (The NEC Arena, Birmingham
9-13 October).
|
|
Described
by Horse & Hound as 'the best equestrian display ever
to visit this country', the incredible bond between Jean
Francois and his horses produces a stunning performance
that totally enchanted Horse of the Year Show visitors when
he last appeared in the UK in 2000. "We
are delighted that Jean Francois will be making his only
British appearance this year at Horse of the Year Show',
commented Grandstand Media director Mark Wein. "We
consider him to be the best equestrian entertainment in
the world and in his previous two appearances at Horse of
the Year Show, his stunning performance has totally captivated
the audience. Now, with Horse of the Year Show moving to
The NEC Arena in Birmingham, we anticipate a new audience
in addition to our frequent visitors and felt that Jean
Francois was the perfect highlight in this exciting year."
This year, Jean Francois Pignon will be performing a new
display that has never been seen before in this country.
His act will take place every evening and during the afternoon
performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will be
supported by two further displays which will be announced

Get
your hands on the only manual you will want to read!
Forget
your computer manual and your car manual. If you have
a horse or pony the only manual you need is the latest
issue of one of the biggest selling books of all time,
The Pony Clubs Manual of Horsemanship.
The
Manual has been a continuous bestseller since it was
first published in 1950 and the revised and updated
12th edition will be launched at next weeks
Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (2nd-5th
May 2002)
Its
advantage over other books of its kind is that it
covers all essential aspects of horsemanship and horsemastership
within its 448 pages. Instead of being the work of
one author, it is an amalgam of expert knowledge and
experience. Dr. Sue Dyson provided the veterinary
section.
Although
widely read by Pony Club Members, it is bought and
used by a nationwide cross-section of riders, both
young and not so young.

NFU
Attacks Threat To Traditional Rural Events
Traditional
events like the village fête, farmers' markets and
gymkhanas could be a thing of the past if Government decides
that they need full planning permission, the NFU has warned.
The
NFU has attacked proposals in a DTLR consultation document
to limit or do away with temporary permission for infrequent
local events like shows or food fairs and outdoor pursuits
like paint-balling or clay pigeon shooting.
In
its response to the consultation, the NFU describes such
rural events - conditionally permitted without planning
permission on 14 or 28 days a year - as a vital part of
rural and urban life and an important source of revenue
for farmers.
Its
submission says: "Many farmers have over decades provided
venues for village activities in this way. They have also
come to rely on events like farmers' markets for the survival
of the farm business.
"There
is a deep concern within the farming community about the
social and economic implications of any changes to the current
arrangements and the consequent harm to the rural economy
at a time when recovery and regeneration are vitally important."

Starting
Field of 63 Horses Marks Record Number for 2002 Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event, Presented By Bayer, April
25 - 28
|
Lexington,
KY-April 24, 2002-With a record starting field of 63 horses,
the stage is set for another exciting edition of the Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bayer, held at the
Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, April 25-28, 2002.
With the completion of Wednesday's horse inspection, where
all 63 entries presented to the ground jury were accepted,
the Olympic-caliber event is officially under way. The first
phase, dressage, will be held over two days, Thursday and
Friday, with the challenging cross-country phase taking
place Saturday before concluding with Sunday's final phase
of stadium jumping. The Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event serves
as the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Four-Star Championship
and is a selection trial for this year's Eventing World
Championships to be held at the World Equestrian Games in
Jerez, Spain in September.
With entries from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland,
and the United States, there is no shortage of star power
as the world's best compete for $190,000 in prize money
with the winner taking home $60,000 and a Rolex timepiece.
In addition, the winner also has a chance at the $250,000
Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, awarded to any rider who wins
the Rolex Kentucky, Badminton and Burghley Four Star events
in succession. Defending Rolex champion David O'Connor will
be looking to make it two in a row, an attainable feat for
the reigning Olympic champion who last year won the Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event in dramatic fashion on Giltedge,
owned by Jacqueline Mars. His wife and 1999 victor, Karen
O'Connor, may pose the biggest threat, as she has received
special permission to start four horses in the competition
that usually limits riders to three horses each.

House Hotel, in Park Lane, London
The UK's leading equine welfare charity, the ILPH

has announced its plans for an Equine Jubilee Celebration
Ball to be held in London later this year.
Says Roly Owers, Director (Support) at the ILPH, "

marking the occasion in some special way. We want
the Ball to be an opportunity to celebrate the horse

covered by the ticket sales and sponsorship - with
the auction and raffle revenue a bonus. We would love

the auction items will be a unique ILPH Bob the Cob rocking

American
Vaulters Complete First Team Selection Trial
Menlo
Park, CA (April 23, 2002) - The first of four vaulting
team selection trials is completed. Several hopeful
teams left the Menlo Park Training Center with out
the qualifying score they had hoped for. Judges Adrienne
Stang (FEI O) and J. Ashton Moore (FEI O) presided
over this one day event.
|
Five
teams entered the competition and anxiously awaited the
results. In the first round of compulsories every team struggled
with the technical aspects of these required exercises.
They each fell short of the required 7.0 qualifying score.
Each vaulter, coach and longeur was aware that only an exemplary
score in the freestyle round would be enough to raise their
final score into the range which could be submitted to USA
Equestrian for consideration to represent the United States
at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez, Spain in September.
The competition was still wide open; less than one point
separated the teams.

the needs to the rider whilst in the saddle. Almost
all boots are designed for use on the ground only.
Just
one example is how little attention and importance
is placed on the width of boots in relation to the
width of stirrup irons.
Because the chunkier look has become more fashionable,
many people now ride with boots that are too wide
for their standard stirrup irons. Few footwear designers
are horse riders and therefore stirrup iron widths
are unlikely to have been taken into consideration.
Accidents
do happen, like it or not and in order to avoid the
rider becoming trapped in the stirrup iron, it is
essential that there should be enough space for the
foot to dislodge itself.
Whilst
one is in the saddle the foot is positioned at an
angle in the stirrup iron. For this reason the width
occupied in the stirrup iron by a riding boot will
be the widest width of the boot + an additional 7%.
In
order to avoid the risk of the foot becoming trapped,
it is advisable that the gaps on both sides of the
boot should be at least 1 inch combined.

The
British Horse Society will be out in force at the
Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials on 1-4 May.
The
BHS Tradestand will be situated in its usual site
just along from the scoreboard. As well as carrying
over 1500 books on everything equestrian, there will
be videos, gifts, toys, clothes and hi-viz safety
gear.
BHS
staff will be on hand to answer queries on the wide
range of BHS activities: safety on the roads, access
to off road riding, BHS exams, training and horse
care. British Riding Clubs will be there too with
information about all their activities.
|
BHS

to meeting our members at Badminton, and we welcome the
opportunity to answer questions from members and non members
alike. We very much regret that the BHS Enclosure that has
proved so popular with members for many years will no longer

Heidi
White Overtakes Bruce Davidson For Lead At MBNA Foxhall
Cup
ATLANTA
(April 20, 2002) -Heidi White of Unionville, PA rode
Northern Spy to a penalty-free cross country ride
to take the lead in the 2002 MBNA Foxhall Cup, the
National Championship of Eventing, at Foxhall Farm
just outside Atlanta, GA.
|
White
started Saturday's cross country phase in fifth place after
receiving a score of 50.00 penalties in the opening dressage
phase on her own 9-year-old English Thoroughbred. With many
riders making concessions to the unseasonable Georgia heat,
there was a large number of time penalties. Among those
who did was five-time U.S. Olympic veteran Bruce Davidson
of Unionville, PA on his mount Welton Tangle who had held
the lead with a score of 47.21 after dressage. Davidson
and Welton Tangle completed cross country with no jumping
penalties, but their 3.2 time penalties gave them a score
of 50.41 and left them in second place.
"I
knew I had a good horse under me today and that it was the
day to ride well," said White who rides with Phillip
Dutton, the two-time Australian Olympic team Gold Medalist
from West Grove, PA. "He's really good in all three
phases and he's the sweetest, nicest horse."
