Threat
to Horse Welfare - Equine Voice Needs to be Heard
THE support
of the equestrian community is urgently being called upon to
help fight far-reaching proposals to radically change the way
veterinary medicines are sold. |
As the campaign
to fight European Commission legislation is stepped up
additional support is being sought from the equestrian world in making
its concerns known about the changes.
This is the plea put out from the Animal Health Alliance (AHA) formed
last year to specially challenge the proposals.
The changes, if approved would mean all medicines for equines would
be obtainable only under prescription.
This would
include not only essential medicines such as horse wormers, (classified
as PML) but also certain over the counter products (so called GSL's)
such as some sweet itch treatments and insecticidal shampoos.

Busy
Vet Needs Urgent Sponsorship for Charity Run
Busy equine
vet Andrew Harrison (37) of Kearns & Rea in Tewkesbury is
desperately seeking sponsorship for his London Marathon run.
Comments Andrew, who is vet at the ILPH (International League
for the Protection of Horses) Herefordshire Centre, Glenda Spooner
Farm, "I have always promised myself that I would run in
the London Marathon one day and it was early one morning while
attending a sick ILPH mare that I rashly said that I would run
for them. |
"I say 'rashly'
because I didn't stop to think what was involved in getting sponsorship!
With my vet's duties, serious training for the run and being a father
of two I have precious little time left to look for sponsorship.
"Having seen first hand the excellent work done by the ILPH during
the last 9 years I feel that it is a very worthy cause and well worth
all the time I am putting into my training."

Jumping Hall of Fame Extends Deadline For Horse Shows To Join
Jumper Classic Series
|
Tampa,
FLMarch 15, 2002The Show Jumping Hall of Fame has extended
the deadline for horse shows wishing to host events on the 2002 Show
Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series to May 31.
This year,
for the first time, the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series
will offer separate Series for amateur-owner jumpers and for junior
jumpers. Furthermore, the standings in these two Series will be used
to determine which amateur-owner jumpers and which junior jumpers
will qualify to ride in the 2002 National Horse Show.
Because
of the significance of this, some horse shows expressed interest in
joining the Series after the original deadline had passed. In the
best interest of the sport, the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Board of
Directors felt it best to give horse shows more time to finalize their
decisions.

Brainwaves
With Charles Owen
Sponsorship
of a Show is not normally a life and death issue. However Charles
Owen was recently approached by Deborah Ward who is a Board
Member of the Brain Trauma Foundation in New York. It is the
goal of the Brain Trauma Foundation to improve the outcome of
all patients suffering from brain injury with implementation
of the scientific evidence based protocol that has been developed. |
Therefore to attract
the support of leading International Headwear Manufacturer Charles
Owen as a Main Corporate Sponsor was a logical progression and association.
In 2002 the 'AA-Rated' Fairfield County Show elected to support the
Brain Trauma Foundation charity which was founded in 1986. To approach
a headwear manufacturer whose aim it is to protect riders and help
to prevent brain injury was the obvious step. Charles Owen has agreed,
as post trauma care is also a large concern of theirs and the next
step in their commitment to riders worldwide.
The aim of the
BTF is to educate the hospitals to use a simple $100.00 procedure
which can literally make the difference between life and death. Monitoring
the brain pressure is a simple first step in treating head injury
and a key part of treatment guidelines supported by the American Association
of Neurological Surgeons, the World Health Organisations Head-Injury
Committee and the American College of Surgeons.

Horse Rescue Mannikin Developed to Train Rescue Techniques
On
Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the Santa Cruz Horseman's Association,
there was a rescue demonstration using Lucky" the
horse mannikin in several situations such as extricating the
horse from a ravine, getting it on a glide and into a trailer
for transport. Also "Lucky" was rescued from an
overturned trailer, which simulates a vehicle accident.
|
|
This
was an opportunity for the rescue team, paramedics and an equine veterinarian
to practice their skills in saving a horse and rider, without the
need of a live horse. Craig Jones, President of Rescue Critters! stated;
"Our animal mannikins provide realistic training to learn life
saving techniques, practice them safely and be prepared for emergency
care until they can transport their pet to a veterinarian."

Tyng Thrills Crowd In $150,000 Ford Grand Prix Of The Desert
During Indio Finale |
If you were going
to write a suspense thriller using Grand Prix show jumping as the
backdrop, today's $150,000 Ford Grand Prix of the Desert provided
the ideal script. Forty-one horses and riders attempted Dave Ballard's
challenging course. "This is the last West Coast Qualifier for
the World Cup indoors in Germany. I built a course typical of an indoor
course, consistent with an indoor arena," explained Ballard of
Ontario, Canada. "I had three, four and five stride lines that
created the technical challenges found with shorter lines. They required
the horse to be 'scopey' and the jumps were big enough that the riders
in general exhibited a tendency to not be able to ride the time allowed."

Communicating
By The Seat Of Your Pants
WAVERLY,
WV--Sometimes a super horse appears at the events where our
instructors are showing that really catches my eye. He is
already such a nice mover or I can see that he has the potential
for three good gaits as he progresses. The following year,
however, I might not even recognize the same horse much less
tag him as a rising star.
|
His flowing gaits
have become short and choppy. His soft jaw and relaxed back are now
clamped and tight.Instead of moving forward in his training, he has
deteriorated. When a setback like this happens, the reason is often
that his rider does not have an independent seat.
Developing
a truly independent seat is the ultimate goal for a rider. It is not
about looking pretty on the horse. It is about being in the right
position with the right control over your own body in order to be
able to communicate clearly and logically with the horse. If your
horse feels the bit move in his mouth, it should be because you are
deliberately asking him for a specific shape or a cadence or a degree
of collection, not because you have momentarily lost your balance
or have become tense somewhere in your body.
Obviously,
if you are bouncing around on the horse's back or grabbing at his
mouth in order to keep your balance, that "noise" is what
he is going to listen to. If the way you are sitting or moving on
his back creates pain or discomfort for the horse, then any communication
is gone. Without an independent seat, it is impossible to properly
influence the horse's mind and body in order to train it for any higher
level equestrian sport from dressage to eventing or cutting or reining.
The rider
must master six distinct skills as she or he develops an independent
seat.

Riders Entered At Burnham Market
Many of
the top names in the three day eventing world have already
entered the Advanced Sections at Burnham Market International
Horse Trials.
|
Jeanette Brakewell,
Mary King, Pippa Funnell, Andrew and Bettina Hoy, Rodney Powell, Leslie
Law and Matt Ryan are amongst those who have already entered. In addition
Zara Phillips will be there, competing in her first advanced class.
"At
this early stage we are thrilled to have so many top names and we
expect a last minute rush," said Event Organiser, Alec Lochore.
"The going is ideal, which is rare in the UK after all the rain
over the last two months. One of the best things about our course
is the fact that we are one of the few events that practically guarantees
a run, which at this critical stage before Badminton, is vital for
many competitors.
