· APRIL ENDURANCE RIDE CANCELLATIONS MEAN HILTON HERBS GOLDEN HORSESHOE RIDE WILL NOT GO AHEAD

A JOINT STATEMENT as at 12.3.01 FROM:

The British Endurance Riding Association & The Endurance Horse & Pony Society

Because of the continued and worsening Foot & Mouth crisis, the British Endurance Riding Association (BERA) and the Endurance Horse & Pony Society (EHPS) have had no hesitation in cancelling all their events scheduled to take place during the month of April 2001.

Explains BERA Chairman, John Hudson: “Unfortunately this will mean that riders have no opportunity to qualify for the BERA flagship ride, the Hilton Herbs Golden Horseshoe. So, regrettably, the decision has had to be taken to cancel the ride for 2001.”

The EHPS have taken a further step by stating that the Society will not hold any rides until a MINIMUM of 28 days after the last confirmed outbreak and then only subject to local permissions being granted. BERA will continue to monitor the situation carefully and will make a further statement by the beginning of April.

Both BERA and EHPS continue to recommend that during this crisis, members should not exercise their horses outside the boundaries of their own property, and they should not be transported in lorries or trailers to any location, except in an emergency.

· ELITE SQUAD MARKS NEW INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

The Elite squad of British Endurance Riders have their minds focused on the principle international endurance event for seniors – The European Endurance Riding Championships in Perugia, Italy on 29 September 2001. The squad of 12 has been drawn up based on the previous two year’s results and the members have attended two assessment weekends (in February and March). Each rider will plan their own campaign but will be asked for their ride programme and to submit their results to the International Committee. A second reserve squad has also been drawn up.

Explains John Robertson for the International Committee: “We were very pleased with the way the first assessment weekends went but it was early days and the horses were only just coming back into work. With all rides being cancelled due to the foot and mouth outbreak the training programmes have been completely upset. The International Committee will be meeting on 27 March to review the situation and revise plans for the year accordingly.”

The British team will be looking to go one better than the Team Silver medal (behind Australia) won at The World Endurance Riding Championships last year in Compiegne (France). In the last

10 years, Britain has competed in 8 international championship events bringing home a total of 7 medal honours: 1 World Championship Team Gold, 1 individual World Championship Silver, 2 European Team Golds; 1 individual European Gold and 2 European Team Silvers.

· BRITISH YOUNGSTERS LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR FIRST EVER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The best of Britain’s young (Under 21) endurance riding talent are set to line up on 8 September in Vittoria (Northern Spain) for the inaugural Young Rider World Endurance Riding Championships.
