WELLINGTON, Florida – Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre converted a 40-yard penalty shot 87 seconds into overtime to lift White Birch over C Spear 13-12 in a physical 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup polo match Friday at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The victory gave White Birch (2-0) sole possession of first place in its division.

In other Hall of Fame Cup action, Jeff Hall scored four goals to lead Old Pueblo over Everglades 10-9 and ERG got five goals from Pablo Spinacci en route to a 12-9 victory over Brigadoon.

Paco de Narvaez scored two goals in a two-minute span to give C Spear an 11-10 lead early in the sixth chukker. White Birch tied it on Aguerre’s 40-yard penalty shot with 2:38 remaining. C Spear countered as patron Tommy Boyle stole the ball near midfield and dribbled in for a near side tap-in with Aguerre on his hip to give his team a 12-11 advantage with 1:42 remaining.

White Birch tied the game at 12-12 with 45 seconds remaining in the game when Del Walton knocked in a rebound of Todd Offen’s 30-yard shot.

C Spear had a chance to win with 12 seconds left in regulation when Chris Gannon was fouled by Peter Brant but de Narvaez’s 60-yard penalty shot was blocked, setting the stage for overtime.

Aguerre finished with seven goals to lead White Birch in a game that was tied eight times. Walton added four goals and Brant scored two for the winners. De Narvaez led C Spear (0-2) with seven goals while Matias Magrini scored four goals and Boyle added one goal.

ERG (1-1) produced a balanced scoring attack en route to victory as Lucas Monteverde scored five goals and Roberto Gonzalez added three to complement Spinacci’s five scores. Tiger Kneece led Brigadoon (0-2) with four goals while Adam Snow scored three goals and Brian Prichard had two.

Old Pueblo’s win gave it sole possession of first place with a 2-0 record. Brandon Phillips and patron John Hall scored three goals apiece for the winners. Tomas Llorente led Everglades (1-1) with six goals while Joe Wayne Barry scored two goals and patron Skeeter Johnston added one goal.

Seventeen teams entered the tournament. The Hall of Fame Cup final is Sunday, February 29 at 3 p.m. at the International Polo Club Palm Beach stadium.
