WELLINGTON, Florida – Crab Orchard jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first chukker and coasted to a 13-8 victory over Black Watch in the final of the rain-delayed 22-goal Ylvisaker Cup polo match Tuesday at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

The final was postponed from Sunday because two days of rain made the stadium field unsafe for the horses and players.

Crab Orchard maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game, including 7-3 at halftime and 10-6 after the fifth chukker. There was only one tie, at 1-1, in the first chukker.

Black Watch started strong in the sixth chukker as 8-goaler Facundo Pieres converted a 40-yard penalty shot with 5:35 remaining in the game and adding a 15-yard near-side with Julio Gracida on his hip 30 seconds later to cut the margin to 10-8.

Crab Orchard responded with three goals in 89 seconds to clinch the victory. Substitute Rosendo Usandizago, a 3-goaler playing in his first high-goal tournament, scored on a breakaway with 4:08 left. On the ensuing throw-in, 16-year-old Julio Gracida took a long pass from his father, Memo, and tapped in a forehand. Eight-goaler Julio Arellano rounded out the scoring on a 40-yard penalty shot with 2:39 left.

Memo Gracida and Arellano finished with four goals each to lead Crab Orchard (4-1). Julio Gracida added three goals and Usandizaga scored two goals. Usandizaga replaced Crab Orchard patron George Rawlings, who was working out of town.

Pieres finished with six goals to lead Black Watch (3-2). Patron Neil Hirsch and Nacho Figueras added one goal each.

The Ylvisaker Cup in named in honor of William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a polo pioneer who founded Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in the late 1970s and was elected into the Polo Hall of Fame in 1996. Ylvisaker, who has been involved in polo for some 50 years, has won numerous major polo tournaments, including the prestigious U.S. Open in 1972.

High-goal polo continues this week with 17 teams in the 22-goal Hall of Fame Cup. The polo matches are open to the public.
