GANDINI WORLD RIDERS RANKINGS
FUCHS NUMBER ONE FOR THE LAST MONTH?
Markus Fuchs (SUI) is still the World Number One. But for how
long? Further to his injury last December during CSI-W Geneva,
Fuchs has not competed for two months now and his lead is getting
shattered. He only leads by 298 points over his runner-up - and
previous World No 1 - Ludger Beerbaum (GER) and will drop another
310 points at the end of February.
The fight for the No 1 position will be fierce between Ludger
Beerbaum and Marcus Ehning (GER), who are only separated by nothing
more than 8 points. Winner of the Grand Prix and of the Swiss
Masters in Zurich, Beerbaum is the favourite, but the recent results
of Ehning, who won the Credit Suisse Grand Prix in Zurich and
scored no less than 175 points in Switzerland, put him in a very
good position to grab the No 1 spot.
Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA), who scored 120 points in Zurich where he
finished second in the Grand Prix just behind Beerbaum, is going
up two places up to the 5th place.
The present leader of the standings of the FEI World Cup Western
European League, Jos Lansink (BEL) only scored 5 points in Amsterdam
and goes down from 6th to 8th place of the FEI Gandini Rankings.
His runner-up in the World Cup, Meredith Michael-Beerbaum who
won the World Cup of Amsterdam last week-end with Shutterfly jumps
up from 56th to 39th position. A broken collarbone two years ago
and a broken leg last year has severely hampered her competitive
career but her third-placing in Leipzig World Cup in January and
her victory in Amsterdam have put her right back on track and
she now intends to compete in just one more World Cup event, in
Bordeaux next
Saturday, before resting Shutterfly in advance of the Final in
Milan in April. "I am also shorted-listed for the Olympics
and I hope I can put the bad luck of the last few years behind
me now" she said in Amsterdam.

FEI BCM WORLD DRESSAGE RIDERS RANKINGS
Ulla Salzgeber (GER) leads the FEI BCM World Dressage Riders Rankings
with a score of 80.158.
Only one change in the Top Ten: Beatriz Ferrer-Salat (ESP) goes
up one place and is now 4th with an improved score of 76.793.
The Spanish rider finished second in the Grand Prix and the Kür
to music last week-end in Amsterdam on Beauvalais.
Anky van Grunsven emerged victorious from a top class field in
Amsterdam last week-end, winning her second FEI World Cup qualifying
competition of the season. Van Grunsven's young horse Gestion
Salinero, only nine years old, kept his head in a hot-house atmosphere
to produce moments of brilliance in the 80 per cent-scoring test.
Anky van Grunsven is still far away in the rankings (57) as she
only has 9 results to count. No doubt that next month, we will
find her very close to the top of the rankings.

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
The Executive Board held its first meeting of the year on 4 February
2004 in Madrid. Among the main topics discussed were the following:
- 2004 Final of the Children's International Jumping Competitions
On the recommendation of the Children's Committee the Executive
Board allocated the 2004 Final to Simi Valley, California, USA.
The date will be confirmed within the next few weeks.
- Chairman of the Driving Committee
The Executive Board accepted the resignation of the Jack Pemberton
(CAN) as Chairman of the Driving Committee and appointed the Deputy
Chairman, Mr Jack
Nichols (USA), as Acting Chairman.
- Registration of Riders
The Executive Board approved the principle of introducing registration
of riders in all disciplines, which would be based on the experience
of registration accomplished so far for Eventing.
- Driving Rules
The Executive Board approved some minor wording amendments to
the Rules for Driving events, as recommended by the Driving Committee.
- 2004 Olympic Games Athens
In view of the 2nd Vice President's/ Technical Delegate's forthcoming
visit to Athens the Executive Board reviewed the issues needing
immediate attention and action from ATHOC in order to ensure successful
equestrian competitions.
- 2004 General Assembly
The Agenda for the 2004 General Assembly, scheduled to take place
in Paris in April, as well as the topics of the Open Forum were
reviewed and amended.
The Executive Board members further discussed in detail a number
of issues relating to: the World Cup, the Nations Cup, the possibilities
of organising Samsung Super League events in the USA, Las Vegas'
application for the World Cup Final in Dressage, and others.
The next meeting will take place on 11 March 2004 in Lausanne
(SUI).
FEI WORLD CUP JUMPING
This week-end, Bordeaux hosts the next FEI World Cup Qualifier
on Saturday, 7 February, at the Parc des Expositions
No less than five champions will jump in Bordeaux (three European
Champions, the world Champion and the Olympic champion) including
World No 2 Ludger Beerbaum. It will be the first time in 10 years
than World No 1, Markus Fuchs is not competing in Bordeaux (see
article above).

SAMSUNG SUPER LEAGUE
The National Federations of the qualified nations for the 2004
season of the Samsung Super League have now all confirmed their
participation to the FEI. The 8 nations qualified for 2004 are:
Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands
and the USA.

FEI VET QUARTERLY NEWS
The future of equestrian sports can only be secured if the welfare
of the involved horses is well protected. A competitive use of
the horse as an athlete in sports, with its dependency on the
rider to decide when the limits of performance have been reached,
necessitates the presence of a veterinary safety net. Veterinary
matters run through all FEI disciplines like a 'red thread', whether
it is in the form of regulations, drug testing or research programmes.
