Bendabout, Catamount Play In Joe Barry Memorial Final Sunday At 3pm At International Polo Club Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, Florida – Ten-goalers Mike Azzaro and Miguel Novillo Astrada will be the center of attention when Catamount plays Bendabout in the historic championship game of the 22-goal Joe Barry Memorial polo tournament Sunday at 3 p.m. at the new International Polo Club Palm Beach. It is the first final in the history of the club, which opened in late December.

Catamount (4-0) and Bendabout (3-0) each registered similar semifinal victories to reach the final. In the semifinals, Patron Gillian Johnston and Boone Stribling each scored four goals to pace Bendabout past Crab Orchard 13-8 while 10-goaler Mike Azzaro and patron Scott Devon scored four goals apiece to lead Catamount over Brigadoon 12-8.

Azzaro leads Catamount with 24 goals while Scott Devon, the highest-rated patron in the tournament, is the team’s second-leading scorer with 13 goals. Nine-goaler Carlos Gracida has nine goals and 15-year-old Ulysses Escapite has chipped in with three goals.

Astrada, who won the prestigious Argentine Open in December, leads Bendabout with 18 goals. His younger brother, Alejandro, has seven goals, Boone Stribling six and patron Gillian Johnston has five goals.

The tournament is named after American polo legend Joe Barry, who died on May 18, 2002 at the age of 58. Born and raised in Texas, he achieved a 9-goal rating and dominated the 1960s and 1970s. Barry won six U.S. Open championships, three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups as well as the Coronation and Camacho Cup trophies. Barry was a teammate of Carlos Gracida’s on the 1980 championship USPA Gold Cup team. One of the greatest No. 4s in polo history, Joe Barry was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 1999.

The polo final Sunday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach is open to the public with tickets beginning at $10 each. For information, call (561) 204-5687.
