John Anderson Edges McLain Ward To Win AmeriChoice NAL Speed Challenge At Winter Equestrian Festival
Wellington, FL – January 24, 2003 –Canadian Equestrian Team veteran John Anderson of Calgary, Alberta edged McLain Ward of Brewster, NY by three tenths of a second to win the $5,000 AmeriChoice NAL Speed Challenge Friday at the 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).
Friday’s featured attraction at the Nutrena/Western Hay Wellington Classic, the opening horse show of this year’s WEF, saw Anderson take an early lead. The 13th of 69 to try the one-round course at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, he finished in 61.123 seconds on Nesbitt Burns Dunvegan.
Anderson’s lead held up for the rest of the day with the closest challenge coming from Ward, the 2002 NAL Open Speed Champion. Ward rode Sporting United to a time of 61.463 seconds to narrowly miss the win. Finishing third was Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ with a time of 61.658 seconds on Little Big Man.

Dressage In Florida Kicks Off 2003 Season
WELLINGTON, FL (January 22, 2003) — With Wellington’s Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club as its hub, the dressage community in Florida continues to expand in numbers and depth, marked this year by more international caliber competitions, clinics, and symposiums than ever before, as well as an ever-broadening base of riders, trainers, and fans who come from around the globe to participate in the Winter Equestrian Festival and events at the Horse Park at Equestrian Estates.
Starting off the season January 11-12, the Palm Beach Dressage Derby Series held The Derby Series Kickoff at the Horse Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee. Olympian Carol Lavell on her Much Ado topped the Prix St. Georges class on Saturday with a 67%. On Sunday, Olympian and World Equestrian Games Team Silver Medalist Sue Blinks and Flim Flam performed a Grand Prix Freestyle that earned 75%.

Racehorse Competition Launched For 2003
Entry forms for the second year of the acclaimed "Racehorses to Riding Horses" competition are now available.
The competition, run by South Essex Insurance Brokers and QBE International Insurance, is designed to prove that Thoroughbreds coming out of training can be re-schooled for a career in other disciplines. It will be supported this season by the British Horseracing Board charity Rehabilitation of Racehorses (RoR)
"The first year of competition was an undoubted success," said South Essex's livestock and marketing manager Nicolina MacKenzie. "We had many, many entries and the ultimate winners last year have set a standard that proves that these much maligned equine athletes can certainly do more than just race - and in the right hands they can even be handled by children."
"Racehorses to Riding Horses" will be open to horses affiliated to the British Show Jumping Association, British Dressage, British Eventing and the British Endurance Society as well as those contesting recognised showing classes or unaffiliated competition run by The British Riding Clubs, Pony Club, Permanent Show Organisers Association or approved centre.

FEI Dressage World Cup at San Patrignano
The 2003 equestrian competition season will open in the light of international dressage, with the Italian stop of the FEI World Cup, which will take place in San Patrignano from Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th January 2003.
For two days, the indoor arena of the community will host the competition among 28 riders representing 11 Nations: Austria, Belgium, Germany, UK, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia. Among them, the best performers of the speciality, such as the German Isabelle Werth, twice world champion and Olympic gold in Atlanta '96, and her compatriots Gina Capellmann and Monica Theodorescu, respectively ranked in third and seventh place in the FEI World Cup 2002/2003 standings. Many other top class riders are expected, such as the Swiss Daniel Ramseier, 5th in the cup ranking, the British Richard Davidson, 6th and the Russian lady rider Alexandra Korelova, currently second classified in the Central European League. At the starting line, the Italian participation is also foreseen, represented by the top speciality riders: James Connor and Stefano Blasi.

Equestrians Open Their Hearts To Make-A-Wish Patient Laura Jahnke
Wellington, Florida – January 20, 2003 – Laura Jahnke was a fun-loving, 17-year-old girl with a passion for horses and horse showing. In her spare time, Laura could be found at the barn caring for her beloved mounts. That was until last year, when Laura was diagnosed with bone cancer and when her life changed forever.
Laura has a wish, and thanks to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minneapolis, Minnesota, that wish is about to be realized. What is Laura’s wish?: To meet her equestrian idols at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. Before her diagnosis, Laura showed at local shows, but never at “A” shows and never in Wellington. Her heroes are the United States’ grand prix riders she watches on ESPN.
After Make-A-Wish let the equestrian community know of Laura’s wish, it was not long before more than 50 well-known riders, trainers, owners, saddlery companies and others rallied to provide funding, transportation, a horse, a stall on the show grounds, riding lessons, tack, clothing and living accommodations for Laura’s trip to The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival.

Machine Washing Leather-Trimmed Breeches

OLDWICK, NJIn Victorian times, coachmen and grooms wore buckskin or doeskin breeches that were kept white by the application of pastes and chalks. When the whole thing just got too messy, the thin leather was carefully hand washed. Then the breeches were stretched back into shape to dry on specially constructed “breeches trees.”
Caring for breeches didn’t get much easier when someone thought of stitching leather patches onto woolen breeches. Now there were two different materials to keep clean, each with its own persnickety care requirements. Modern leather finishing processes and synthetic fabrics have made cleaning breeches easier than it was in “the old days.” But not by much.
Riders still grapple with the problem of how to launder riding clothing constructed of materials with very different cleaning requirements. The detergent products that do a great job cleaning sweat and ground-in mud off fabric also pull the lubricating oils out of leather, leaving it stiff and uncomfortable when it dries. The inner fibers become brittle and eventually break down. Suede, the leather of choice for good saddle grip, has always been a challenge to clean and condition because fat- or oil-based leather conditioners stain it and mat its nap.
Given the cost of a pair of leather-seated breeches, riders have cause to be concerned about finding cleaning methods that extend the useful life of their garments. Thanks to the synergy between two recently developed companion leather care products, however, riders can now both clean and condition leathers right in their washing machine. The cleaning solution works during the wash cycle to deep clean grimy dirt and leave leather fibers with a negative ionic charge that attracts the more positively charged conditioning dressing during the rinse cycle. The dressing lubricates and relaxes the leather fibers. The procedure is not much different than doing other laundry and the result is soft, supple, deep-cleaned leather.

The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival Opens Its Doors to Numerous Charitable Causes
Wellington, Florida – January 22, 2003 – Stadium Jumping, Inc. and the equestrian community will be supporting numerous charitable and community causes during The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival.
Stadium Jumping and its President, Eugene R. Mische, are generously donating The Special Events Pavilion on The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club grounds, together with tables and chairs, during five Sunday grand prixs. Different charitable organizations will use The Pavilion during those afternoons for fundraising events. The Pavilion, which seats up to 400, is a 40’ by 200’, three-tiered, permanent structure overlooking the International Arena. The scheduled Pavilion events are as follows:
