The Burden Of Donkeys In The Holy Land
There
is something about a donkey that makes us all go a bit
soppy. Whether it is because of Christian religious
connotations or the sheer cuddliness of Winnie the Pooh's
depressed Eeyore, there is little doubt that the humble
donkey holds a special place in the heart.
However,
this is not the case the world over and in some countries
donkeys, mules and asses are treated dreadfully through
cruelty and neglect - often the result of a different
cultural take on this most endearing of creatures |
One
person who has been determined to make a difference is British
Lucy Fensom, who gave up the glamour of being an airhostess
for BA to form Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land (SHADH)
in 2000. People will be able to see the work of the organisation
at first hand at this year's Midlands Equine Fair to be
held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, on 8 and
9 March.
Lucy
had travelled extensively throughout Israel and the Palestinian
Territories, and was horrified over and over again by the
maltreatment of donkeys in the region. Her list of horror
stories seems almost endless - a pregnant mare being hit
and run over by a taxi; donkeys tethered with wire for so
long that the tether removed flesh to the bone; animals
being left tied up in extremes of heat and cold with no
water or food; beatings, overburdening and other outrages.
Lucy
took action, and SHADH is now a registered charity and operates
a rescue centre based just outside the Israeli town of Netanya.
With a small team of local and European colleagues, she
has developed a centre that provides protection and care
for abandoned and abused animals and which works hard to
raise awareness of the problem throughout the region.

Saddle
Up For The Ultimate All-Indoor Equine Event!
The
Midlands Equine Fair - "the ultimate equine event"
- returns to the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, on
8th and 9th March 2003 with more to see and do than ever
before.
Organisers
Contour Exhibitions & Events are promising the biggest
and best show so far, with a dedicated Equestrian Shopping
Village boasting around 130 trade stands; world-class demonstrations
in the Supreme and Top Equestrian Arenas; the opportunity
to meet the experts; a horse and pony breed society area;
and an innovations area featuring four great winners of
an innovation competition run by Contour.
In
the Supreme Equine Area, champion three-day eventer Blyth
Tait will demonstrate how to train a cross country horse;
David Lloyd will present a show of Western riding to put
the best cowboy to shame; international horse driving champion
Dick Lane will provide a display showing the full process
of horse driving, from harnessing up and the carriage to
building an obstacle and driving it with the team - there
might even be the chance to ride with Dick for a lucky member
of the audience; as well as a demonstration from Nicole
Golding and Adam Goodfellow from Kelly Marks' Intelligent
Horsemanship team, national dressage champion Nicky Barrett
in action, a stallion parade and carriage driving from Gary
Docking.
The
Top Equestrian Arena will see displays from the Fizz Coaching
Clinic which specialises in helping both horse and rider
to achieve a happy, balanced attitude and consistent performance;
a presentation from the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre
showing the re-education of race horses for re-homing and
a life outside of racing; and a variety breed parade.
But
the Midlands Equine Fair 2003 is not just about displays
in arenas. There will be an opportunity to Meet the Experts
from a wide range of disciplines including aromatherapy,
hands on healing, bits and bitting, laminitis, nutrition,
saddle fitting and shiatsu. The Fizz Coaching Clinic will
also be in action in this section.

LSU
Equine Health Studies Program receives more than $20,000
from stallion auction
BATON
ROUGEThe Equine Health Studies Program in the LSU
School of Veterinary Medicine held its second multiple-breed
Stallion Service Auction in the last quarter of 2002 to
generate funds for expansion of the Equine Intensive Care
Unit in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics. Over
$20,000 was generated through the Internet-based auction.
More
than 180 stallion owners from across the United States,
representing more than 25 different breeds, donated stallion
breedings to the auction. All stallion services offered
in the auction were intended for the 2003 breeding season,
and mare owners could bid on any number of stallion services.
The
Stallion Service Auction is an incredible opportunity for
stallion owners to showcase and market their stallions and
their farms while making a much needed and appreciated tax-deductible
gift toward construction of the new Equine ICU, said
Dr. Rustin M. Moore, director of the Equine Health Studies
Program at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally,
this multiple-breed auction provides a tremendous opportunity
for mare owners to obtain breeding services to top quality
stallions at potentially reduced fees.

Student
finds time
If
you are a horseman involved with a breeding operation, finding
a few free minutes can be hard at this time of the year.
But Leslie Mongeur of DeLand, Florida is finding the time
to attend school at Allegany College of Maryland. She's
taking the online course, Training Performance Horses. "Being
able to learn at my own pace was the key attraction when
I first read about the course," Mongeur said. "I
knew the season was coming and I wouldn't be able to take
all the lessons on a regimented schedule. But as soon as
the horses settle do for the evening, and I have the time,
I'll turn on the computer and I won't have missed a thing."
In addition to caring for nine horses, primarily Paso Finos,
and running a pet grooming shop, Mongeur is just as busy
as most horse owners. Time is precious. That's why nationally-know
author and trainer Don Blazer designed the internet course,
Training Performance Horses. Now students can get lessons
whenever they can find some free time. There is no time
limit for completing the course, but when it is finished
students receive a Certificate of Recognition.

City
Slickers Youths to Compete at The 2003 Winter Equestrian
Festival
Wellington,
Florida January 13, 2003 -- The combination of children
from the rough and tough, inner cities of Connecticut competing
at the most prestigious horse show venue in the United States
sounds like the stuff of a Hollywood movie. But thats
whats going to happen when seven youngsters and five
horses from the City Slickers Equestrian Program arrive
at The 2003 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington for
the month of February.
City
Slickers is a non-profit organization which provides inner-
city children in Connecticut, ages 11 to 17, with year-round
horse- and farm-related experiences. Careers within the
horse industry are offered for the older participants. According
to Ruth Fried, director of City Slickers, many of these
children would be dropping out of school, having babies,
doing drugs and joining gangs if it were not for this
program. City Slickers attempts to take these children out
of a world mired in hopelessness by showing them the horse
world, an environment rich in love, caring and personal
responsibility.

Proof
That Horses Have A Life After Racing!
International
star among the winners in a nationwide competition
A
nationwide competition to prove the versatility of ex-racehorses
has revealed winners from every discipline, one saved from
the slaughter house, a medal-winning British team horse
and another that has "rescued" a rider nervous
after breaking her neck.
Racehorses
to Riding Horses was devised by South Essex Insurance Brokers
and QBE International Insurance, one of the leading insurers
of Thoroughbreds. From an initial entry of hundreds, six
will be in London (on Saturday, January 11) for a presentation
ceremony at the British Horse Foundation Breeders Awards
Dinner at the Olympia Hilton Hotel.
The
competition was backed initially by leading riders and commentators,
including BBC television's Clare Balding, trainer Mark Johnston
and international showjumper William Funnell. Subsequent
support has come from the British charity Rehabilitation
of Racehorses (RoR) and director Mrs Di Arbuthnot will be
presenting a rosette and individual Wetherbys horse pedigrees
to winners on Saturday.
Horses
entered needed to be registered with Wetherbys and to have
been in training for either Flat or National Hunt racing.
Points were accrued during the 2002 season in affiliated
competition or unaffiliated classes run by recognised organisations.
"It
has been an unqualified success and will certainly attract
an ever greater number of entries in future years,"
said South Essex Insurance Brokers managing director Barry
Fehler. "The results prove conclusively that with sympathetic
handling, racehorses can go on to fruitful and successful
new careers."

Ohio
Top Hands Rodeo Drill Team To Perform at the Can-Am All
Breeds Equine Emporium
January
10, 2003
Hold onto your hats and tighten your saddles,
the internationally renowned Ohio Top Hands Rodeo Drill
Team will be performing at the Can-Am All Breeds Equine
Emporium.
The
Can-Am All Breeds Equine Emporium, the first all encompassing
equine show ever held in Canada, is scheduled March 13-16
at the Western Fairgrounds in London, Ontario.
Since
their debut in 1998, the Ohio Top Hands - 12 world class
women riders performing various drills in spectacular costume
- has delighted audiences in major shows and parades throughout
the United States. In 2002, they were crowned Mid-America
Drill Team Champions in Kentucky.
"Our
performances are written for 12 horses, but can be adapted
for up to 16," said team captain and founder, Ginger
Ryals, who also choreographs each of the difficult drills.
"We perform to music and always carry American flags.
We're a lot like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical
Ride, except we're more rodeo style. We performed with them
at the 1998 California State Fair, but we've never been
to Canada before, so we'll get some Canadian flags."
Ryals
said one of the Top Hands' signature moves is a rider entering
the arena at a full speed gallop and carrying a flag while
standing. The maneuver is called a Hippodrome and displays
the incredible athleticism of the rider.

What
Will the Future of the Horse Industry Be Like?
Preface:
This article is being released instead of a basic news release
to promote a new book titled: "The Ultimate Equine
Legal and Business Advisor," By George G. Johnson,
Jr. and Tracy D. Dowson. We hope that it both piques your
interest and answers some of your questions.
Your
childhood memories with your horse may tell more about your
age than looking at your teeth. While some people remember
the old plow horses at their grandparents, others will remember
the popularity of the Appaloosa horse in the late 1960's.
Many babyboomers remember the large classes in breed and
4-H shows and these boomers are aging, still riding and
showing and creating a demand for more comforts like horse
trailer's with living quarters. The youth of today may have
memories of all those release forms that their parents have
to sign or events being cancelled by outbreaks of diseases
like Vesicular Stomititis.
The
world around us has changed drastically in the past ten
years and these changes are like a great rolling snowball
that increases in size as it barrels straight towards us.
Changes on all fronts including: biotechnology, legislation,
public opinion, access to information, land development
and the actual manner in which horses are used.
