Nikki Tate’s Great Pony Express Adventure 2002

Canadian Children's Author To Appear At Great Basin Book Festival

Nikki Tate, author of 11 children’s novels, will be at the Great Basin Book Festival Saturday joining 24 other authors and literary figures who have gathered for the event, now in its sixth year. She will participate in a panel discussion on Children’s Literature Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Molly Flagg Knudtsen Stage. In the afternoon she will appear at the Teen Tent at Wingfield Park where she will talk to young people about writing. She will then be at the signing tent to autograph her books.

Canadian Children's Author Nikki Tate riding the Pony Express Trail

Besides talking about her novels and her life as a writer, Nikki is sure to recount her adventures of the previous 18 days in Nevada. She has been riding portions of the Pony Express trail and visiting elementary schools, talking to students about the historical events that inspired her latest novel, Jo’s Triumph (Orca Book Publishers). She has also introduced her novels to new fans at book signings along the way.

Niki, along with a support crew and a pony called "Breezy", started her trip in Ely in eastern Nevada where her father, Colin Williams, was the first muralist to paint a scene on the side of one of the town’s buildings. Her travels have included parts of the Trail and schools at McGill, Egan Canyon, Eureka, Robert’s Creek, Austin, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Fallon, Sand Mountain, Virginia City and Dayton. Leading up to the Festival she will be visiting several schools in the Gardnerville/Reno/Sparks/Carson City areas this week, delivering mail from Canadian school children to Nevada students. Nikki brings history to life for students by riding up to the schools on her pony, with a mochila (mail bag) slung across the pony’s back, inspiring many questions about the events of 1860.
