horse SO YOU'D LIKE YOUR OWN PONY...

The British Horse Society is to hold a RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP DAY at its Rescue Centre at Oxhill in Warwickshire on 8 September 2001.

The day marks the start of the first ever Equine Welfare Week, a new initiative sponsored by Fort Dodge Animal Health Ltd and part of the Jeep National Riding Festival, which takes place from 8 to 16 September. The week is the joint initiative of leading equine charities throughout Britain under the banner of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC), which as well as the (BHS), includes The Home of Rest for Horses, The International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH), and Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

The Equine Welfare Week will promote responsible horse ownership as part of the JNRF, highlighting the important aspects of horse care, the consequences of neglect and where to get help and advice when it is needed.

The day at Oxhill will address the question "What does it cost to keep a pony and how much work is involved" and will provide essential information for anyone who has ever considered buying their own pony. The Westwood family will be taking visitors through the routine of caring for Bobby and Connie, the rescue ponies that are now part of their family. Trigger, the mechanical horse who has introduced so many children to the idea of riding a horse and has become a mascot of the Riding Festival, will be present. Spillers will give a talk on feeding, and Eraquell will talk about that most important of regular horse care tasks, worming. There will also be a demonstration of saddle fitting by a Master Saddler.

The BHS has produced a comprehensive booklet A Guide to Horse Care and Welfare, in conjunction with the Home of Rest for Horses, which will be widely distributed throughout Welfare Week. The booklet covers all aspects of horse care and copies can be obtained by sending an email request to jnrfwelfare@hotmail.com or call 01903 893312.

For a fun day out and to find out more about looking after horses, come and take part in this exciting day at the BHS Rescue Centre at Oxhill on the A422, half way between Banbury and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Entry costs only £2 for adults and £1 for children. The money raised will go towards the cost of looking after the rescued ponies at the centre.
