Gorky Takes a Walk in the Park at Woodside to Win $5000 Circuit Opener Jumper Classic

Woodside, California. Sharn Wordley rode Gorky to a walk in the park – the Horse Park at Woodside – to win the $5,000 Woodside Circuit Opener Classic. Only three horses managed a clear round over Chris Collman’s course, and Gorky was the fastest of the three with a winning time of 34.554. Wordley was especially pleased with the black Selle Francais’ performance given that this was the horse’s first time back in the show ring after colic surgery. “I bought this horse in January and out of nine classes, this horse has won a prize in each of them. He is pretty hard to beat in a jump off. He is unbelievably fast, smart and careful.” Wordley and Gorky won a grand prix at Rancho Mirage, CA in January and they earned ribbons in all the grand prix classes they entered at Tucson, AZ.

This is Wordley’s first time showing in Northern California and he was impressed with the Horse Park at Woodside. “I think this could be a fantastic place and the area needs something like this. It has a good feel about it.” This is the second year of the Woodside Summer Circuit and the circuit sold out this year. The Woodside Circuit Opener (June 24-27) is the first of three “A” shows at the scenic 272 acre Horse Park at Woodside. As the shows grow, so do the facility upgrades. The facility continues to improve the footing and exhibitors can now rent turn out paddocks during the shows.

The Woodside Summer Circuit is part of the seven show, “A” rated hunter/jumper series at the Horse Park at Woodside. On of the main features for 2004 is the New Woodside Hunter Incentive Program which awards trainers “dollar” points for ribbons earned in hunter classes with double dollar points at the Woodside Fall Finale (September 30 - October 3). In addition to the cash prize, the winning trainer will get the use of an oceanfront villa at the Maui Marriott Ocean Resort for eight days. Trainer Lynn Irving is currently in the lead. “It would be so exciting to win,” said Irving “but I don’t want to get too excited yet.” She noted that the prize money will give her spending money for the Maui vacation. Complete standings are listed at www.esportsinc.com.

J.J. Atkinson and Slingshot won the $1500 Junior-Amateur Owner Jumper Classic and Andrea Church aboard Special Effects won the $1000 Marshall & Sterling Childrens-Adult Jumper Classic. Results, including show champions, are listed at www.esportsinc.com. The Woodside Summer Circuit continues with the Bay Area Festival (June 30 - July 4) and the Golden Gate Classic (July 7 - 11) and both feature $20,000 grand prix events.
