USET Announces Change to CSIO Spruce Meadows Team Selection Procedure

Gladstone, NJ—July 12, 2002—The United States Equestrian Team (USET) has announced a change to the selection procedure for CSIO Spruce Meadows, September 4-8.

The USET’s previously approved CSIO Spruce Meadows team selection procedures called for the World Equestrian Games (WEG) Show Jumping team to compete at both the CSIO Spruce Meadows and the World Equestrian Games in Spain, September 11-22.

Since that time, the USET Show Jumping Committee has encountered difficulties with scheduling travel arrangements for the events, which are separated by only two days. As a result, the USET has decided that it would be more advantageous for the WEG team to compete in the Samsung Nations Cup Final in Germany, August 22-25. “This change will give the WEG team the best possible opportunity to prepare for the Games,” commented Sally Ike, USET Director of Show Jumping Activities.

The USET Show Jumping Committee, along with the USET Show Jumping Active Competitors Committee, has recommended that the selection procedure for CSIO Spruce Meadows be modified in order to account for the change. The selection procedure will be altered as follows:

“After the four horse/rider combinations have been selected for the WEG Show Jumping team, riders finishing in descending order, i.e. 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, etc., at the WEG Selection Trials will be offered (in that order) the option of representing the United States at either CSIO Spruce Meadows, or participating at the World Equestrian Games as the Alternate. It is possible, therefore, that the 9th placed horse/rider combination at the conclusion of the Selection Trials will serve as the WEG Alternate.”

The United States Equestrian Team is a non-profit organization that selects, trains, equips and finances equestrians of the highest possible standard to represent our country in major international competition, including the Olympic Games and the World Championships. To accomplish this, the USET seeks out and nurtures the development of talented athletes - riders, drivers and horses - and provides the support and guidance they need to help them attain their fullest potential.
