Nona Garson Wins Wednesday Feature at 33rd Annual Lake Placid Horse Show

Lake Placid, NY – June 26, 2002 –U.S. Olympic veteran Nona Garson of Lebanon, NJ won the featured event of Wednesday’s rain-shortened opening day schedule at the 33rd annual Lake Placid Horse Show.

Although rain and lightning forced postponement till Saturday of the Whiteface Mountain Speed Stake, Garson exhibited her Olympic form at the North Elba Showgrounds when she rode Susdal to victory in the Intermediate Jump-off class. Garson, a 2000 Sydney Olympian, rode Susdal to the only penalty-free ride of the competition to secure the win.

McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, the top ranked rider on the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) Show Jumping Rider List and winner of last Sunday’s $50,000 Rolex USET Show Jumping Championship at the USET Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ, placed second and third on Sasha and Romeo, respectively. Ward scored four faults on each mount with Sasha getting the higher placing based on a better time over the 15-jump course.

More than 1300 horses and the nation’s best show jumping riders are at the Lake Placid Horse Show competing for $360,000 prize money. The horse show continues through Sunday, June 30 when it concludes with the $50,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid Presented by Jaguar/Land Rover for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy. The 25th annual I Love New York Horse Show follows, July 3-7.

In addition to the two AGA Grand Prix Series events, the schedule also includes North American League (NAL) classes, Adult/Children's Jumper events and Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic series events for junior riders and amateur/owner riders on Sunday, June 30 and Saturday, July 6.
