horse Fenney And Grace Crown Their Comeback By Winning The $50,000 EMO Grand Prix

Ocala, FL (February 10, 2003)—Tracey Fenney of Flower Mount, TX, and Grace, a thoroughbred mare owned by Hidden Lakes Farm, delivered an amazing comeback by winning the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix in their first week of competition since the mare's injury over a year-and-a-half prior. Grace was Fenney's star partner in 2001 when the pair traveled to Europe for the U.S. Equestrian Team's Developing Riders' tour of northern European shows. Unfortunately the 11-year-old mare suffered an injury during the tour and has been out of action until this week. The rest and recuperation seems to have served Grace well, and now horse and rider have crowned their comeback by winning their first Grand Prix of the season at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

Thirty-one horse/rider combinations took to the field in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix under not-so-perfect skies. Buddy Brown, former Olympian and Grand Prix course designer, set a challenging 13-obstacle course while taking the conditions into consideration. "The weather was certainly a factor today, but the ring held up very well," said Brown. I built the course a little less "scopey" in its combinations and not quite as big as I might have if it were sunny and dry."

Only three riders turned in clear first rounds to advance to the jump-off. First to deliver was Jonathon Millar of Perth, Ontario aboard Karat. Millar and Karat enjoyed a second place win in Thursday's $25,000 Grand Prix class, and were looking to do better this time round. Aaron Vale of Aiken, SC, a strong contender at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, partnered with Coralecho for his clear round. Winning rider, Tracey Fenney had to wait until her third mount, Grace, delivered the faultless round that would take her to the jump-off.

Millar was the first to tackle the seven-fence jump-off course, knocking two rails and accumulating a time fault by going 2.99 seconds over the 50 seconds allowed. Vale followed up with the fastest time of 45.75 seconds but paid for it with 8 faults. Last to ride, Fenney and Grace were in a good position and completed the round with just four faults and a winning time of 47.47 seconds.

Other major award winners at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit I included:
Bayer Legend Leading Hunter Rider - Winn Alden, Bristow, VA
