TAMU Mare and Foal Workshop Set for February 24

College Station, Texas – Broodmare and foal management is the focus of the 8th Annual TAMU Mare / Foal Workshop, set for February 24, 2004 at the Louis Pearce Pavilion in College Station, Texas.

The workshop offers mare owners training on topics including basic reproductive function, estrus detection and teasing, signs of foaling, health care, foal handling and neonatal care. Additional topics include body condition scoring, weight estimation, broodmare nutrition, forage selection and hay quality, and feeding young horses for sound growth and development.

“Each year we strive to offer the most comprehensive training for mare and foal owners,” said Dr. Pete Gibbs, Extension horse specialist. “With well over 200,000 breeding horse scattered across the state, this workshop addresses those needs of mare owners who breed and raise horses in Texas’ multi-billion dollar a year industry.”

Interested participants can register by calling the equine science section of the TAMU Department of Animal Science at 979-845-1562, or visit http://animalscience.tamu.edu. Participants should register before February 17, and the cost of attending the workshop is $40 per person, which includes educational materials, admission to the trade show, a noon meal, and refreshments. This workshop is also part of the 2004 Equine Workshop Series, which also includes the Basic Horse Management and the Performance Horse Workshop. Participants may attend all three workshops for $100.
