5th Annual Work to Ride Polo
Fund-raiser
By Lezlie Hiner
Before an exuberant crowd of over 250 people Work
to Ride (WTR) held the 5th Annual Polo Fund-raiser. Large yellow
tents graced the sidelines while pokeymon characters wandered among the crowd
and painted childrens faces and handed out brightly colored balloons.
Between chukkas a jazz trio played eclectic tunes. |
The Fairmount Park Polo field is among the oldest
in the United States with trees lining the field on all four sides to provide
shade for the spectators and trailers. The field lay dormant for 43 years
following WW II. Since Work to Ride found a home at Chamounix Stables the field
is once again active with polo alive and growing in Philadelphia. The polo
gods, while raining out the original fund-raising event, threatened to rain out
the event once again but ended up smiling on the day with occasional breaks of
sun and temperate weather.
Work to Ride is a non-profit equestrian program
for urban youth at risk in Philadelphia. Adopted by the Cowtown Polo club and
Valley Forge Military Academy, WTR youth play grass polo in the summer and
Interscholastic Polo in the fall and winter. Raising funds for the WTR program
is a major focus for the annual event. However, for the young participants, it
is an opportunity to play before a hometown crowd.

Irish riders Kevin Babington and Peter
Charles took First and Third places, respectively, at the prestigious Hickstead
British Grand Prix this afternoon (Thursday).

Last year (2000) the Grand Prix was won by British Rider John Whitaker on
Virtual Village Calvaro FC, while the highest Irish place was taken by Cian

San Patrignano CSI-A:
Emile Hendrix, the senator of international equestrian sports, wins
the Infostrada Grand Prix Vincenzo Muccioli Challenge
|
The 5th edition of the San Patrignano
International Show jumping, Vincenzo Muccioli Challenge, came to a
triumphant end, as in a beautiful story, with the victory of the Dutch top
rider Emile Hendrix, on the extraordinary chestnut jumper Audis Finesse.
Hendrix, performing a double clear with the fastest course in the second round,
(43.76), gained the Infostrada Grand Prix, the most important class of the
event, dedicated to the memory of the San Patrignano founder. The Dutch rider
gave the whole community a precious success, considering that this year he was
the new technical advisor of the show. It was an exciting and hard fought
competition until the end; 39 combinations were on the starting line and only
10 of them were admitted to the second round: eight riders went clear on the
first course while the Argentine rider Wertheim and Urs Fah from Switzerland
got a slight time fault.

Leslie Howard and Nick of
Diamonds Win $100,000 Avis Grand Prix at HITS Catskills III |
ELLENVILLE, NY (July 22, 2001)-U.S. Olympic Team
Silver Medallist Leslie Howard, 44, of Westport, Connecticut, aboard Nick of
Diamonds, was the fastest of five double-clears to win the $100,000 Avis Grand
Prix at HITS Catskills III today, besting a field of 22 that included another
three U.S. Olympians-Nona Garson, Peter Leone, and Todd Minikus. Sydney Team
Alternate Minikus, 39, had four clear for today's jump-off, including his
Olympic mount Oh Star, but the win eluded him. "It only takes one horse to
win," said Howard, who rode only the single entry in today's class.
"My horse is extremely fast. If he keeps the jumps up, I don't think
there's a faster horse in the country. His ground tempo is so quick and he
turns so quickly. When Oh Star had problems, I knew that if I kept the jumps
up, I had a good chance."

I hope this is some kind of déjavu. Even last year I

Curly Haired Fox Trotters - Missouri
Fox Trotters for Folks Allergic to Horses
Yes, it is true. There are curly haired,
registered Missouri Fox Trot horses which are hypoallergenic for people
allergic to horses. I know, because we're Curly Fox Trotter breeders, and I've
seen, with my own eyes, many allergy sufferers able to touch, groom, and ride
our horses with no allergic reaction. |
|
Genetically there are 2 different kinds of curly
coat Missouri Fox Trotter horses. One kind is curly because of a recessive
curly gene, the other because of a dominant Curly gene.
The comfort of riding a fox trotting horse makes this type of Curly very
appealing, especially to those with bad backs, injuries, or those who are just
getting a bit older. Our horses combine the best of both worlds. Curly horse
lovers still enjoy owning a rare and unique horse, and since the horses also
have MFTHBA papers, they have much broader breeding choices - there are many
more Missouri Fox Trotters to breed with than Curly horses. And with Fox
Trotter clubs in many states, they can take advantage of those social and
showing opportunities as well.
If you know an allergic horse lover, tell them they need suffer no more. They
can have it all - a beautiful Missouri Fox Trotting Horse to take them down the
trail without sneezing, watery eyes, or rash!
